M X The Seal of the Society of Jesus Dear Graduates: This Year Book of the Class of 1940 of Canisius High School is a happy and memorable record of events that have gone, yet because they are old and treasured ones, th.ey will linger long in your memory. Time has a way of taking its toll in the matter of our memories. Yet the sweet and happy ones remain, even after the years, to console us for our efforts in attaining the better things of the mind and soul. W'e sincerely hope, then, that you will leave old Canisius hlled with the enthusiasm and idealism, which your teachers aimed to 6jT6Ct in your souls during your High School years. Alma Mriter clearly understood the purpose of your coming to us four years ago and it has valiantly striven to carve and etch that purpose in every member of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty. For there is a holy purpose in Catholic and Jesuit Education, which weighs the Temporal with the Eternal, the things that are Hunian with the things that are Divine. You have lived in such an atmosphere during your years at Alma Dlater. Yet we, your teachers and directors, would not consider our work complete, unless the principles that pervade such an atmosphere have been absorbed totally by each one of you. The end of your education has been to prepare you for life.: yet not merely life that finds its reward in dollars and cents, but goes further to see the larger value- service to God and possession of Him in the life to come. Consequently, take cheer. The sun will not shine through every day and year that God has still allotted to you. It would be rash optimism to expect this. Yet if one has caught a Divine sense of values, he need not fear the clouds and the rain, for they will pass like all other things that are earthly. Beyond all these stand the principles you learned at Canisius High School - that God is first in my life a-nd that in this strength and knowledge I can add all other things. As you leave us, it is our sincere wish that success may leap and run before you. Wherever you go, you must understand that yo-ur teachers have great hopes for you, the newest sons of the Church, in her glorious tradition of education. The pioneers in that tradition have flung the torch to you, with the words: Keep it alightf' May you do so, always, valiantly and courageously, until the day when Divine Success shall come to you. Then you will understand that having possessed God, you have possessed all things. Sincerely your friend, f' ,Q A J ' 3 1
