T C J' f.: Throughout the ages, much wisdom and knowledge has been gathered by man. Early in our history Aristotle observed that the man who devotes himself to the life of learning has chosen wisely and highly. Thus it is appropriate that in the important func- tion of the university the tremendous burden of student instruction is laid in the hands of the scholar. The world, as taught at Canisius, is com- posed of matter and spirit. The ultimate end of the liberal education is the transmission of the rich heritage and the newly acquired knowledge of the world of the spirit, the world of matter, and the veiled world of spirit and matter, man. Under the guidance of the supreme sciences, theology and phi- losophy, this dual world is presented through the social sciences, mathematics, literature, and the physical sciences. To accomplish these educational results, mature and lettered men have been gath- ered together to guide the students through the paths of knowledge in a manner de- signed to evoke from them a vigorous and universal exertion of their faculties.
