From the start of the school year down to Graduation night, the Seniors were kept busy making the most of their last year. Although each Senior probably has a list of his own, some of the main highlights of the year were: For the first time in the history of the class the Seniors won first prize in the Home- coming float competition. On the evenings of April 21-22 the class presented Home Sweet Homicide, a well received mystery comedy. No doubt the highlight of the year was the weekend of May 11-14 which the Seniors spent in Winnipeg, seeing the sights. The Baccalau- reate sermon was given by Rev. J. G. Sortland of the Methodist church on May 21. Following Award Night on May 22, Seniors and their parents were guests of the Juniors for the tradi- tional Class Night held this year in the Brethren Church parlors. And finally, on May 26, the class occupied the place of honor on the gym- nasium stage. Dr. Laurence Flaum of Minot State Teachers College gave a very Hne address. Lois Garst gave the valedictory and Joan Houtcooper the salutatory, As the class received their coveted diplomas from School Board President Art Torkelson, they realized that one of the most happy chapters of their lives had just closed. As the largest class in Senior High, fwe're braggingj we were well represented during the year. One half of the basketball team was sophomores and one of our girls was a cheer- leader. We had charge of the bonfire at the snake dance and we entered a hopeless float in the Homecoming parade. We were proud to have one of our boys chosen as the Snow King during the March of Dimes campaign. We were well represented in band and choir with entrants in the District speech and small groups contests. Three of our girls were delegates to the State F.H.A. Convention in Fargo. To stir things up in Cando High School we had a cool beatnik party. After a busy and funfilled year, we are looking forward to an even better one next year. The Cando High School Choir presented a fall concert, a Christmas concert, and a spring concert during the 1960-1961 school year. In each concert a theme was followed to add interest and performance experience. The Christmas concert, entitled Song of Angels, was accompanied by a pageant given by grade children. In addition to these performances, the choir appeared in two festivals and sang at the baccalaureate and graduation services for the 1961 graduates. 30 SECOND ROW: Beverly Litsey, Karalee Westmiller, Lois Garst, Joan Houtcooper, Shirley Eggl, Irene Carlson, Judy Wisler, Glenda Army, Margaret Krack, Sharon Johnson, Jill Wesrlind, Carly Pulst, Sandra Quick, Sharon Matthews. The theme, Wonderland by Night, was very nicely shown by a painting of a moon winking and shining on a lake. The punch bowl was sunk in a wishing well and the punch was served by two eighth grade girls. The Sparkletones provided a variety of dance numbers to make the evening enjoyable. The coronation climaxed the evening with the crowning of Mary Eggl by the 1960 Queen, Irene Carlson. Majorettes 45 HIGHLIGHTS The events that happened during the school year of 1960-61 will probably go down as some of the most noteworthy and important events of the century. The national election took most of the spotlight during the fall and early winter months as Republican Richard M. Nixon and Democrat John F. Kennedy campaigned down to the last minute. Kennedy emerged the victor after a close election. North Dakota did a turn about in the state election by voting into the governor's position William Guy, the first Democratic governor since the 1930's. Our Republican state legislature ratified the name change of the Agriculture College to the North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. There was much bloodshed and turmoil as three new trouble spots--the Congo, Laos, and Cuba--were thrust into an already uneasy world situation. But the world of science took a giant step forward as the Russians shot Yuri Gagarin into a single orbit around the earth and returned him safely to become the first man into outer space. On May 5 the United States came up with a less spectacular but not less important space probe. Com. Allen B. Sheppard uttered the words, Man what a ride! after he returned from a fifteen minute jaunt in which the Navy's Redstone rocket boosted him 115 miles up and 302 miles downrange from Cape Canaveral. On the local scene, after two unsuccessful attempts, the school bond proposal passed on the third election which will provide C ando with a much needed new high school. The new building will be completed sometime in the early part of next year. 46 ,T , ,,,,, I 3111 511 gil! 11111.W11111N H W 1111111w 1 E X 1 1 111 l 1 1111111 11111 1 111 111 13111111 1 111 ' 1911 1 W, 111 116 buf 15311 , -11- 1111 1 W 1111 1 1 asses .
