Mr. Barry has not only been a great guidance counselor to us, but also a great friend. Mr. Barry joined us at the beginning of the 1985-86 school year. Before coming to Canby High School, he spent 9 years in South Dakota as a social science and history teacher: he was also the guidance counselor for sixteen years at Hector High School. Mr. Barry graduated from South Dakota State University with a major in guidance and counseling and a minor in Psychology. We dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Barry, to show our appreciation for all you have done for the senior class of 1988. The world is always changing; nothing stays the same. Fads changed from long and baggy to short and tight. Also frosted clothing, Guess jeans, jean jackets, cropped miniskirts, cropped shirts, boots, and safety pins on the pants. Twins' sweat shirts became a big hit after they won the world series and that spirit was carried on all through the year with our own Takedown Towels and Hoyme Hankies. Everyone's hairstyle was their own. Girls' styles were crimped, long or short and guys wore spikes, buzzes and the longer look. Billy Idol made a hit with Mony-Mony, David Lee Roth's Just Like Paradise. White Snake's Here I Go Again,” Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer, and Honestly by Stryper. A few hit movies were Dirty Dancing, Fatal Attraction and Three Men and a Baby. Good times rolled at Gary, Lake Benton, Ivanhoe and even in our little town Canby. The 87-88 school year started out with new teachers, classes, weight room and a fund raiser for the new football field. The 87-88 school year went by fast but is full of memories that will always last. FHA Row 1: Robin Kack, Chad Moeller, David Johnson, Tammy King, John Houge, Paul Hansen, Ann Deslauriers. First time that we've had male members. To keep this organization going we must learn to work well together, give up time and a helping hand. —Tamara King FHA Officers: Row 1: Lori Antony, Treasurer: Catherine Deslauriers, Vice President: Cherrie King, Recreation Leader. It is quite a big tournament but we had four winners. Our next meet was at Luverne with five winners. Pipestone was our next stop. We all seem to like their school and we had a lot of fun, especially with four winners! During our state wrestling tournament a few students went to Montevideo for a small meet. We cleaned them out with seven winners. We were supposed to go to Fulda for our final showdown but we got snowed in. The most fun we had was when we had districts in our own little town of Canby. We received sweatshirts from Porter Town and Country so we proudly wore them that day. We ended up with nine winners; three that would advance to regions. Our coach was Lavonne Winters with Audrey Busse as assistant coach. Dave Dybsetter helped us quite a bit too. From the bottom of our hearts we thank them all. Some fond memories from our escapades were singing our hearts out on the way there and back; hurrying to get ready at 6:45 to be on the bus by 7:00 or 7:15; cramming down food at Hardees or on the bus; the long and short bus rides; and trying to find something to do while we wait for results. Martha Leppke, a storytelling member, happened to advance as second alternate in the state. We are all proud of her! Mrs. Lavonne Winters, alias Frau, led this play, she worked very hard at it and we thank her. National Honor Society SENIORS: Row 1: Wendy Schalek, John Houge, Tammy Berckes. Chris Fairchild. We held special fund raisers for a year in order to raise enough money for our trip to Florida. We left at 6 a.m. April 17 and arrived in Florida some 36 hours later. While in Florida we playeo three times. The first time was Tuesday morning at the University of Central Florida. After olaying we toured NASA Space Center and then spent the rest of the day at Cocoa Beach. Wednesday we spent the whole day at Disney World. Thursday was our last day there. We spent the morning packing and then it was off to Water Mania where we played in our swimsuits. We spent the afternoon there playing volleyball on the beach; swimming in the wave pool; going down the water slides and just plain enjoying the sun! That night we went to Old Town where we performed one last time before departing. We arrived back in Canby and to snow on Saturday. We had a great time! Why, because we have such an unbeatable reputation, which is great. But when you do this, you overlook many other fine things. And one of those is Canby High School Choir Program. Even before Canby was such a Power House in wrestling, Canby's choir was going strong and taking awards for being such a great choir. To give credit to great singers every year wouldn't be right. Someone has to shape these singers into an award winning choir every year. That person is overlooked a lot and he shouldn't be. He has to put up with coming in early, to singing with half a choir every other day, to singing with just 5 boys. And even with all these inconveniences he's made do miraculously. I mean have you ever heard a Canby senior choir that you didn't like? And this year's choir was no exception. I think because Mr. Reesnes is such a stubborn, hard working, patient, perfectionist of a man, he's made our choir into a proud organization. I hope I can give him some credit where credit's due and show my appreciation for having him as a teacher. P.S. Thanks for the new uniforms. —Marcus Padilla 16 Student Council Student Council Members: Row 1: Jason Long. Ann Deslauriers, Mike Kontz, Todd Hoffman. Homecoming was definitely one of those major events that brought much excitement to, and made last- ing memories of, our senior year. Ex- citement and anxiety consumed the halls and classrooms of school im- mediately in the fall since we seniors voted for the seven king and queen candidates during the first week of school. After a lot of organization and work was done by many enthusiastic people, coronation night was a sparkling success. A large crowd of people, our class among them, were proud to see all the queen candidates looking so beauti- ful, each accompanied by a dashingly handsome king hopeful. Host Paul Hansen and hostess Janelle Jacob- son made a tough job seem easy as they kept the air in the gym light and cheerful. Senior singers Marcus “V4 Suit Padilla and Jill Lisa-Lisa Weber brought the audience to life with the musical entertainment they provided.Tamy Berckes politely introduced the four foreign exchange students: Xavi Ramos, Meri Roca Codina, Petra Koning and Thierry Bouillard to everyone. (No one can assume how many special memories our senior class will have of those four special people who shared so much with us.) Everyone's curiosity was satisfied as Chad Merritt and Wendy Schalek were crowned Canby’s 1987-88 Homecoming King and Queen. The dark gym was illuminated with the flashes of approving friends' and families' cameras. Various organization rep- resentatives gladly presented their gifts to a very elated king and queen. The suspense was over but the fun of Homecoming was just beginning. There was dress-up week which many of us seniors participated in. We found school work hard to take seriously as we came to school dressed as beach bums. With Shawna Eilers' flippers flopping, who could concentrate on anything? Mrs. Lang, being the good example she is, showed us all how to look and act like a REAL nerd. Amy Nordseth and Rhonda Gentz had the act perfected by the end of the day. On Combat Day, Jim-Bob Hurt showed us all how easily he could be camouflaged into a bush. Many people participat- ed in Homecoming festivities and everyone's enthusiasm shone at the football game at the end of the week. Many supportive fans cheered the Lancer football players as they played a good game. After the game, the grand finale, the Homecoming dance, was held at the high school. Homecoming was indeed a fun time that drew us seniors together as a class. It was a special time because we all took part in making what we have left — our memories. —Jill Weber left, Jill Weber below, The Four Suits Kelly Jeremiason, Mike Fairchild, Xavi Ramos, Marcus Padilla bottom, pianists Laura Stone, Holly Maas MC's Paul Hansen, Janelle Jacobson 5 • • m r : i ■ 'i irtti ;• A Hi!ii r v .w ST I if: V H t£ iMiiftiffm gji; -“«i1 iiii'.rf ,i' ££M w jjj| «i JP]| f :l. ■isT t 1 ?' The coaches, with help from Coach Kevin Hansen, and the players were enthused about the new season. In the first game of the season against Pipestone, things weren't going too well in the first half for the Lancers but, with the help of a pep talk from Coach Lebsock, things began to turn around. Even though we did not win the game, we scored 26 points in the 2nd half for a good showing. The next game was against Ortonville. and the team was even more excited and confident about a win. The game was very close, as were many but, not unlike the rest of the season, the Lancers came up short. To end the season 2-6, the two games the Lancers won were against Appleton and Madison and they were explosive and entertaining. In the Homecoming game of the season, we sparred against the reigning State Class C champions. We played eye to eye, face mask to face mask, and the first half went well for the Lancers but we couldn't keep the momentum going in the second half as Minneota came up victorious. Two of the year's great highlights were that Brad Johnson, with 6 interceptions and Rusty Kockelman. with mountainous amounts of bone- crushing tackles, made all-confer- ence for the Lancers. We had great support this year, for which we are very greatful. We'd like to extend a personal thanks to Coaches Jeff Lebsock and Steve Bergeson for a job superiorly done; we wish we would have another year of hard, but fun. work with them. The 1987-88 Volleyball season started on August 17, at 8:00 a.m. We had 8 days of morning practice with a few days of having an afternoon practice, too. Needless to say, we were all ready for our matches to start and continuous practice to stop! But, Coach Cindy Bredeson did try to make practice fun by having us play games — whoever would get 3 serves first would get to choose the next drill. With 48 girls out in grades 9-12, there were four separate teams formed so everyone could get some playing time. Our first match was at Clarkfield. The season went on, with long bus trips to Ortonville and Wheaton, since we changed conferences again! We ended the season with a record of 6-9 and took 4th place in the conference Shawna Eilers was selected to the all-conference team and Tammy Berckes and Shawna Eilers were both named to the Marshall Independent All-Area team. We were seated in the district and played Russell-Tyler- Ruthton in the first round. We lost 3 games to Ortonville. The Lancer boys finished 5th, with Kelly Mortenson placing 11th. Girls placed 9th, with Ali Felton placing 10th. The season went on with meets at Wheaton, Marshall, Canby, Redwood Falls, Ortonville and Montevideo. At the Little Sioux Con- ference meet in Ortonville, the Lancer boys placed first, the girls fourth. Before running in Regions, the Lancer team traveled to Wahpe- ton, ND to compete. The Lancer girls placed third, while the boys placed second. The Junior Varsity boys placed first with the top five runners in the top ten finishers. On October 29, the Lancer team traveled to Olivia to run the Region 3A race. The boys’ team placed second with Chris Jelen placing 6th. There goes that stupid alarm clock again. Why me? What did I do to deserve this? Well, there's no use prolonging it any more; I have to get up anyway. I've already pushed the snooze button three times. Alright Where's my other sock? It was here yesterday. Oh well, I'll just wear this one, so what if they don't match, they are socks right? And I might as well forget breakfast too. I’m already five pounds over. Why did Gingles say we had to run anyway? To prove he's a tough coach? No. I'm sure he does it just to be mean. 7:20. Well, I'm at the school. I've got my running clothes on and am ready to go. I only have about 20 minutes of stairs. 200 skipping ropes, and 50 sit ups to do. I know, maybe I can fake an injury. Ya. that's it, injury. Gingles will believe I jammed my big toe and therefore I can't run, won't he? No that won't work. He'll just say to get my tail running. That's the regular procedure for extra morning practices around the month of February. Extra practice as in — plus the two hours, 5 days a week, blood pumping, muscle aching, sweat dripping play time called practice after school. No, not everybody does this, but then everybody doesn't go to state each year. For 14 straight Canby has been fortunate enough to go to state. Sometimes it takes a little extra, and a little extra is what we do. And this year that little extra paid off as Canby claimed the Class A title over Staples 33-13. When you hear Canby's the 1988 Class A champions of Minnesota over the Civic Center's intercom you forget all the extra time you put in. Was this year's team the best ever? Hard to say: you can't get a straight answer out of Coach Gingles or Bredeson. Five state entrants: one state champion and one silver. There were 1B seniors out and we beat Staples in the finals and we did it all without a foreign student! We would like to thank the cheerleaders, the booster club and the whole town of Canby for helping us by waving Take Down Towels and ringing your Gingle Bells. —Marcus Padilla and the Canby Wrestling State Championship Team Row 1: Chris Fairchild.
