CROSSROADS Eric Athman I leave the safety of familiar surroundings; The laughter, the crying, the noise, the people; I walk along a well-traveled road To both sides I see uncharted wilderness I’m one with the road as if I’m a car In a toy race track with grooves to hold me. I stop often, wondering where I am; I know what is behind, ahead is uncertainty; I want to turn back, life passes In all directions as if it has a destination. Where am I headed? What is my fate? Mv life seems to have no purpose. As if a challenge to grooved security; The road decides to split, offering turmoil; Experienced lifers continue with no thought; Some stop to offer well-known advice; Others don’t quite understand, many just Smile and wave, continuing their decided journey. The nearest road beckons me, I follow For it seems to offer the least resistance; I’m no trail-blazer but I may have to be; For the road decides to challenge me It shrinks to a barely distinguishable trail Overgrown with brush and strewn with rocks. I continue for lack of anything better to do Than to kill time or will time kill me? (Personally, I think this thread of a path will.) I come to a hill, on top now I stop time, my mind wanders Giving my body a rest. Off in the distance sounds of my past And future reach to me, merging With an unfamiliar sound that calls my name, I turn, revealing itself as the present; What have I missed? In traveling I’ve forgotten all about the glorious now! Renewed vigor swells inside, vigor I didn’t Know I had, I continue with my road; But the straight and narrow doesn’t Intrigue me! Off to the side Is that wilderness, seeming much Less wild. It’s more enchanting now. Taking a chance I entered, opening A whole new world before me; Released from the track grooves that dictate I’m a pardoned prisoner, free to make My own decisions, my own path, but Mainly to set my own direction. Free to explore my surroundings, I run Into many detours, I honor their directional Point: but I choose the length of their lead I have made my own path in a wilderness Of live; it is familiar habitat, for I have left no stone unexamined. I continue my travels, hopefully never To fall for failing to cross roads That bind me in their grooves I’m stronger for the road challenged Me and I conquered The CROSSROADS of yourlife.

THERESA NEMITZ Entered Life Oct. 15, 1963 YOU Passed Away Nov. 21, 1979 “Reflections” Pause, if only for a moment, to reflect on a friend who waved “good-bye” all too soon. And, if in that moment, you find laughter, be grateful, for now you understand the voice of the thundering clouds. And, if in that moment, you find sadness, be grateful, for you have felt the warmth of the angels’ tears in a soft spring rain. Pause, if only for a moment, for someday we, too, will wave “good-bye” — all too soon. Anonymous 2
