Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1980 volume:

CROSSROADS Eric Athman I leave the safety of familiar surroundings; The laughter, the crying, the noise, the people; I walk along a well-traveled road To both sides I see uncharted wilderness I’m one with the road as if I’m a car In a toy race track with grooves to hold me. I stop often, wondering where I am; I know what is behind, ahead is uncertainty; I want to turn back, life passes In all directions as if it has a destination. Where am I headed? What is my fate? Mv life seems to have no purpose. As if a challenge to grooved security; The road decides to split, offering turmoil; Experienced lifers continue with no thought; Some stop to offer well-known advice; Others don’t quite understand, many just Smile and wave, continuing their decided journey. The nearest road beckons me, I follow For it seems to offer the least resistance; I’m no trail-blazer but I may have to be; For the road decides to challenge me It shrinks to a barely distinguishable trail Overgrown with brush and strewn with rocks. I continue for lack of anything better to do Than to kill time or will time kill me? (Personally, I think this thread of a path will.) I come to a hill, on top now I stop time, my mind wanders Giving my body a rest. Off in the distance sounds of my past And future reach to me, merging With an unfamiliar sound that calls my name, I turn, revealing itself as the present; What have I missed? In traveling I’ve forgotten all about the glorious now! Renewed vigor swells inside, vigor I didn’t Know I had, I continue with my road; But the straight and narrow doesn’t Intrigue me! Off to the side Is that wilderness, seeming much Less wild. It’s more enchanting now. Taking a chance I entered, opening A whole new world before me; Released from the track grooves that dictate I’m a pardoned prisoner, free to make My own decisions, my own path, but Mainly to set my own direction. Free to explore my surroundings, I run Into many detours, I honor their directional Point: but I choose the length of their lead I have made my own path in a wilderness Of live; it is familiar habitat, for I have left no stone unexamined. I continue my travels, hopefully never To fall for failing to cross roads That bind me in their grooves I’m stronger for the road challenged Me and I conquered The CROSSROADS of yourlife. THERESA NEMITZ Entered Life Oct. 15, 1963 YOU Passed Away Nov. 21, 1979 “Reflections” Pause, if only for a moment, to reflect on a friend who waved “good-bye” all too soon. And, if in that moment, you find laughter, be grateful, for now you understand the voice of the thundering clouds. And, if in that moment, you find sadness, be grateful, for you have felt the warmth of the angels’ tears in a soft spring rain. Pause, if only for a moment, for someday we, too, will wave “good-bye” — all too soon. We have become close friends over the years. However, some of our friends have gone their separate ways. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize those people who are also part of our memories. Each of these people have left Canby High for their own special reasons, but each of them have left many friends here. Those who have shared part of their high school years as members of the Canby High School Class of 1980 are: Stephanie Albrect LeAnn Erp Bednarek Julie Denelsbeck Buysse Bryan Carner Gary Citrowske Pat Citrowske Dawn Waltz Bridget Nemitz Deslauriers Mike Ellison Irvin Floyd Candy Freeman Jeff Gottskalkson Adeline Grengs Robin Haugaard Paul Hennen Howard Hiler Tristy Hillestead Peggy Hofhenke Judy Johnson Bryan Kallholf Jason Kannegeiter Dave Kloos Deb Citrowske Kloos Betty Jo Kraft Lori Kubiszewski Juanita Lay Valerie Lay Cindy Madoll Brenda Maertens Steve Malherek Jim Mason Wayne Monson Dawn Nelson Mark Olson Sherri Olson Kelly Roe Valerie Shippy Cecil Sik Dave Snyder Violet Thompson Nancy Wernisch 4 Special Events The 1980 Homecoming Royalty includes Karen Bach, John Full, Jackie Drietz, Randy Braun, Lori Jelen, Dan Hoffman, Laurie Kloos, Rick DeBlois, Paula Rotenberger, Scott Swenson, Kim Oellien, and Neil Dovre. The crown bearers were Lynn Ramlo and Jason Hout- man. Karen and John Jackie and Randy Lori and Dan Laurie and Rick Paula and Scott Kim and Neil Homecoming will be a week I’ll never forget. It all started out with the usual dress up days, which put everyone in the Homecoming spirit. Then Thursday and Coronation came around. I never thought I would even be one of the seven finalists. That night we marched up on stage with our partners. We then heard farewell speeches from King John and Queen Kaye. Then the guys lined up for crowning. I couldn’t believe it, John put the cape on me. Then the girls lined up and Kaye crowned Deanna as Queen. We were all re- lieved when it was finally over. Friday night the Lancers played a good football game but were defeated by a tough Appleton team. The loss was somewhat forgotten as we celebrated the Homecoming dance. Homecoming left me with many great memories. I would like to thank everyone for making it possi- ble. I hope that the future classes will have as much fun, and as many memories as we had. King Bob Wow! Homecoming, what an unbelievable week! It still seems unreal, but it was a most exciting and most memorable week. It started out dressing up each day in our crazy outfits for dress up days. Each day brought more excitement and tension as Thursday and Friday approached. Finally Thursday came when all the candidates, trying to look calm and holding in all our nervousness and excitement, walked down the aisle. Chuck Lacek, Master of ceremonies, told of activities of each of the candidates and wel- comed us all there. We then listened to a song by the girls quartet, followed by the farewell speech of Queen Kaye and King John. The guys were then called for- ward and Bob was crowned King. Then it was our turn. Queen Kaye called us forward, bringing tension, silence, and suspense to everyone. Then after what seemed like forever the robe was placed on my shoulders. I was fdled with excitement, joy, disbelief and much happi- ness beyond expression. After Bob and I were crowned Homecoming King and Queen of 1979,1 was presented with a dozen red roses from the Letterperson’s Club and an autographed football from the team. The excitement died down a bit when we got defeated by the Appleton Aces on Friday night. During half-time the float was presented with the Royalty. The activities of Homecoming ended with the listening and dancing to “Velvet Hammer” which helped lift spirits again. Homecoming of 1979 will always hold memorable and unbelievable times for me. I’d like to thank everyone, especially my classmates, for leaving me those very special and unforgettable memories of being Homecom- ing Queen of 1979. Best of Luck to the Royalty of next year, and I hope you will cherish your time as much as King Bob and I have this year. 8 Queen Deanna Entertainment was provided at the coronation by Phillip Reesnes and the Barbership quartet formed by Sonja Madsen, Barb Wilde, Lois Budhal and Marlys Weber. Chuck Lacek presided as Master of Ceremonies. Music was provided at the Homecoming dance by “Velvet Hammer”. Don Nemitz received the Fan of the Year Award from Paula Rotenberger. These included Sonja Madsen, Barb Wilde, Marlys Weber, Lois Budahl, Rick DeBlois, Paul Houge, Phil Reesnes, and Scott Yackley. Mr. Wilde was the speaker for the evening. Following the banquet the band, Us, played in the gym. The theme for the evening was “Jungle Love”. On behalf of the senior class I would like to thank the junior class for all the hard work they put into prom to make it such a terrific night. WHERE THE ROADS COME TOGETHER Paul Colwell None of us is bom the same, We don’t know why, It’s the way we came. Every heart beats a little differently, Each soul is free to find its way Like a river that winds its way to the sea. For life Is a journey And there are many roads beneath the sky And there are many good people Who don’t see eye to eye. You and I are different from our brother Could that be why we need each other As we go along? Everyone is partly right And everyone is partly wrong. Not every man can sing your tune, From where he stands there’s another view. With every turn we’re learning more And perhaps we’ll find That the walls we build are only, Are only in the mind. There are many roads to go And they go by many names. They don’t all go the same way But they get there all the same And I have a feeling that we’ll meet Someday where the roads come together Up the way. Judy Weber and Colleen Osowski received Superior Awards in the Food Additive division at the state FHA convention. The crossroads of your lives are on unending adventure, so I chose CROSSROADS as the theme of this annual. Each of us has to make decisions when we come to a crossroad, and these decisions affect our whole lives. The pathways of high school can never be crossed again. I hope that this annual can remind us of the paths we have taken, and the great times we had on this path. I am very happy to present to you the 1980 Lancer. I found it difficult to confine the events of an entire year to the pages of a book. I wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the Annual Staff. I would like to express a special thanks to Rick Nelson, Jackie, and Julie for all the help they gave me. Thanks also to Donna and Jackie for typing so much and encouraging me. I’d like to each of you who stopped in my office to check up on me and help out once in a while. But most of all. I’d like to give a very sincere thanks to Chuck Lindemann, who spent many many hours developing, printing, and taking pictures. I really appreciate it. I hope that this annual brings back memories of all the great times of Canby High, but most of all, I hope that you never forget the people that you meet crossing the crossroads of your lives. Coach Sillerud stated, This season we had a very young team with only two seniors participating. Al- though the Lancers had only two wins during the season there were some bright spots along the way. This young squad held Tracy to their lowest point total of the regular season (42 points) and pressed LSC champ Appleton into overtime falling 46 to 41. Next years girls team should improve on this year’s performance if we can raise our FG percentage about this year's dismal 23 percent.” The bomber girls basketball team was coached by Ms. Jean Nagel. THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps a better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, 1 doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Faculty B. Wornson D. And the gifts of growing old Are the stories to be told Of the feelings more precious than gold. Friends, I will remember you — think of you — pray for you, And when another day is through, I’ll still be friends with you. Underclassmen CLASS OF 1985 Lots of people have asked me what it’s like to be in the seventh grade. Well, to me it is almost like starting school all over again. A lot of classes and methods are new, but with time you get used to them. You learn new responsibilities, like not telling everyone your locker combination, as well as develope old ones, like being on time for class. (Which is hard because the people around you never seem in a hurry to go anyplace.) I like the opportunity to participate in activities, especial- ly sports, and not having to be the best in them. Finally, in seventh grade you start at the bottom of the bunch, just like in kindegarten, only now you don’t get all the fringe benefits. (Like Fri- day’s off-RATS.) CROSSROADS We walk the road of life as people with a dream; Discovering new horizons, and sharing what we’ve seen. And as we go our way, we laugh, we cry, we grow, that lead us to tomorrow. The CROSSROADS of our lives, an untending adventure. Our journey throughout time, our pathway to the future. At times the road is rough, and we feel blue But we’ve got a friend, so we’ll make it through. The CROSSROADS of our lives, an unending adventure. Our journey throughout time, our pathway to the future. Seniors Being a senior this year has been a really unique experience; also one of the important years in a person’s life. It’s one time when you are on top. It is also the last year of sharing times with your childhood friends that you’ve gone to school with. Also, you really start to think about your future. It is the long awaited finish of your high school days.
