We have given each other something That will strengthen us in our journeys, the memories of sharing, respect and love George Betto We, the editors, Gail and Beth, would like to dedicate this annual to the parents of the senior class for letting us grow up to be the indi- viduals we are and for showing us how not to be afraid of being our- selves . Thank you for teaching us right and wrong and giving us the strong morals we need in this world. Once in a while we have taken the wrong path and went to the wrong side of the track but by your strong guidance and love we have come back. Through you, we have been shown the keys of life and have been taught how to love. Thank you for being our parents. It started off with choosing the fifteen lucky girls, then the seven. Dress up days got everyone in the mood. Then that day came when we had to walk up the aisle trying not to be nervous. Kim Borowski, Mistress of ceremonies, outlined activities pertaining to each. We listened to a song by Rick DeBlois and heard from King Tom. The guys lined up and King John was crowned. Then we heard from Queen Grace, she gave her farewell speech. She then had us line up. The tension, suspense and excitement were greater than ever. She placed the robe on my shoulders! Joy, hap- piness , and disbelief filled me. After we were crowned 1978 Homecoming King and Queen, I was presented a dozen red roses from the Letterperson's Club and an autographed football from the team. The big football game was a victory. We defeated the Dawson Black- jack's 17-8. We ended our homecoming activities lis- tening and dancing to 1 'Rebel.'' This was ' 'quite a deal'' to me and I hope next years royalty will cherish their day like King John and I did. Queen Kaye Homecoming week was exciting for everyone. Dur- ing that week it was fun dressing up to the different themes. This week was also a hard week of practice for the football team. When Thursday came around, I began to get very nervous. I couldn't believe I was one of the seven fi- nalists . That night we all were on the stage and were listening to Queen Grace and King Tom say a few words. After that they called the guys up. The next thing 1 knew everyone was shaking my hand. After that they called the girls up and Queen Kaye was crowned. On Friday, we faced a tough Dawson team, but we came through 17-8. We celebrated with a victory dance after the game and everything was fantastic. I would like to thank everyone and hope the future classes have as much fun as 1 have had. By Mr. Gingles for Wrestling: Canby finished the season by sweeping the District 9 tournament with 9 champions. In the Region III tournament, Canby dumped Clarkfield and Raymond to advance to the state tournament in St. Paul. At the State tournament Canby won a quarter final match with Warren and stopped Chatfield in the semi finals. In Idle championship match with Staples, Canby was down 24-9 before winning 5 of the last 6 weights to win their 3rd state title in the past 4 years. Mr. Sillerud reported for Girls Basketball: Kaye and Bemie were named to All- Conference. The team won sub-district with wins over Cottonwood and Minneota. They beat Tyler in District but lost to Milroy in the semi-finals. Baseball, this year was first in District. They won over Cottonwood and Tracy but lost to Montevideo and so lost the Region Championship. Mr. Hoyme was coach. Mr. Dondelinger says about football: Steve Saum was selected to play at the High School All-Star Football game played at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis on July 27, 1979. Steve was one of the 72 players selected from the state. He played for the South Squad. Selection to this elite squad is probably the highest individual honor that exists in Minnesota high school football. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS HOP TO IT Wrestling Cheerleaders are pictured to the right. Pamela Catherine Voss DeAnn Joy Warwick Steven Oscar Vick Jane Marie Weber MARTIN IS OUR YFU EXCHANGE STUDENT Dear Students, Dear Teachers and Crew, My exchange student year here in Canby and at Canby High School is almost over now. It has been a very, very successful year for me. I had so many new experiences here in these 9 months. I really appreciated the help and at- tention of you. Without you and your friendliness this year wouldn't have been so suc- cessful . 1 like it so much over here that 1 plan to come back. Maybe 1111 meet some of you again at that opportu- nity . I wish I could stay here a little bit longer with all the new friends I found. This year truly went fast. Unfortunate - ly, I have to return to Ger- many . Of course, I want to go back, too, to see my family and my old friends. But it's more sad, that I have to leave all my new-found friends so soon; already in one and a half months I will be going back to my home-country. 1 try to make the best out of these weeks. So far 1 didn't have many problems over here in the U.S. 1 hope it'll stay that way. This exchange-student ex- perience was of much a great value to me that it will take several years, before 1 will recognize the full meaning of this year. I tell you, to see another country as an exchange student, not as a tourist is really great. You see things, you would never see if you would just come for vacation. You get to know the people much better. You leam a lot about their culture and customs. There are a lot more things that you'll remember all your life. You develop yourself very much during an exchange-student year too. Your personality presents itself as what it really is. You find out how happy you can be, how sad you can be, what you can do, and what you can't accom- plish. You join several things, like school sports and enjoy the sportsmanship in the team. I hope some of you will get an opportunity to visit another country, not only as a tourist, but as an integrated member of a family. Then you will find out what it is all about. You really showed me alot of your life. Thank you so much for that. It wasn't very easy to make this year a 100% positive exper- ience. But you students and teachers helped me a lot with that. Thank you again, 1 hope that you won't forget me, at least for a while. Yours, Martin Hahn Wilhelm Henze Str. 4 3352 Einbeck West Germany P.S. Thanks to the Class of 79 for electing me as the gradu- ation speaker at the Commencement of the Class of 79. Opposite page, top: The Cleveland family, and Martin. We, the Class of 79, would like to thank Martin for all the new experiences we had because of him. Thank you for coming to our school. I'm sure we' 11 remember you for longer than just a while. Often the road will be rugged And the hills insurmountable, too ... But always remember, the hill ahead Are never as steep as they seem, And with Faith in you heart start upward And climb 'til you reach your dream, For nothing in life that is worthy Is ever too hard to achieve If you have the courage to try it And you have the Faith to believe ... For Faith is a force that is greater Than knowledge or power or skill And many defeats turn to triumph If you trust in God's wisdom and will ...
