Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1978 volume:

THE ART OF AWARENESS The art of awareness is the art of learning how to awaken to the eternal miracle of life with its limit- less possibilities. It is searching for beauty everywhere, in a flower, a mountain, a machine, a sonnet and a symphony. It is developing the deep sensitivity through which we may suffer and know tragedy ... but through which we will also experience the grandeur of hu- man life. It is identifying yourself with the hopes, dreams, fears and longings of others. It is learning to inter- pret their thoughts, feelings and moods. It is keeping mentally alert to all that goes on around you; it is being curious, observant, imagina- tive that you may build an ever increasing fund of knowledge of the universe. It is striving to stretch the range of eye and ear; it is taking time to look and listen and comprehend. It is through a growing awareness that you stock and enrich your memory — and as a great philosopher has said: A man thinks with his memory.11 Wilferd A. Peterson We the Editors, are proud to dedicate the 1978 Lancer to Mr. Gary Hanna. Mr. Hanna has been a teacher in Canby High School for 18 years, and during that time has taught junior high math, geography, civics, and drivers' education. Throughout these courses, he has tried to instill in all of us a sense of responsibility toward our world and each other. He's never too busy to stop and talk, or to have a little fun, and if we have a problem, he can usually offer some good advice. Thank you, Mr. Hanna, for being a special help as we go on our way to FINDING OURSELVES. Whether we were actlvle par- ticipants or avid fans, athletics have aided all of us In the quest for our true identities by promoting our physical and mental well-being. While teaching us the fundamentals of each sport, our coaches and advisors have tried to instill In us a spirit of cooperation and fair play which will benefit us in all we do, and for this we thank them. This building Is our school and these peo- ple are the administration, faculty, and staff of that school. They are our friends and advisors, responsible for preparing us for the future. To this end, they devote much time and en- ergy, seeing to It that we have a pleasant place In which we can work. They are not here just to feed us In- formation, but to see that we can use that Information to make our lives more meaningful. For this dedica- tion, we owe them a debt which Is Impossible to repay. We can only say thank you , and remember the peo- ple who helped us along the way as we were FINDING OURSELVES In '77- 78. FAR BELOW: Our busdrivers have the responsib- lity of getting us to and from school. Naturally, our time at school Is not concentrated totally on our classes. Mod breaks and opens provide us with time to see and talk to our friends. Occasionally an assembly breaks the routine and gives us a chance to listen to a concert or gain a glimpse Into areas we never really thought about before. Pep fests are held to boost our school spirit and to really show our teams that we're backing them. School also serves as a focal point for much of our social lives. Dances are organized by our class officers and the student council. Homecoming and Prom are often the highlights of our year. The several plays presented give everyone a chance to get In- volved with acting, to work on a technical crew, or just to attend a performance. Of course, these are only a few of the events that make our life at school a special time. Here we can look back at %77-'7% and see how we were FINDING OURSELVES through our school. SCHOOL LIFE 38 King Tom And Queen Grace Homecoming has always been a favorite event which everyone looks forward to and which leaves a lot of memories. The homecoming week started out with the usual dress-up days, bringing excitement and getting everyone In the spirit. Then came Thursday night. We all had the jitters as we walked up with our partners for the corona- tion ceremony. We then listened to Jerllyn Bockes, Marlys and Sonja, and the girls quartet sing, which relieved some of the pressure. Carol Boulton, 1976 Homecoming queen, gave her farewell speech. Then she asked us to step for- ward In a line. At last the big moment came, bringing tension and excitement greater than ever and silence. When Carol put the robe on my shoulders, happiness, speechlessness, and disbe- lief filled me. Then the guys lined up and Tom Hanson was chosen king. After we were crowned 1977 Homecoming king and queen, the Letter- person's Club presented me with a dozen red roses and I received an autographed football from the team. The following night was rather muggy and wet, but the Lancers defeated Madison 28-0 and during half time, the float was presented with the royalty. The Homecoming dance fol- lowed featuring Masquerade . Thus, the '77- '78 Homecoming festivities came to an end, leaving that one special girl super happy and with unbelievable memories. This time that girl was me. Queen Grace Homecoming week was really fun. Dress up days were fun, seeing everyone get Into the spirit of Homecom- ing. Being a member of the football team we prepared very hard for Homecoming. It is always one of the most Im- portant games of the year. Coronation night was quite an experience. We were all glad when It was over. Friday night was a blast, cele- brating our Homecoming victory at the dance. I hope it will be as much fun for next year's royalty. King Tom ANN AND RON VICKIE AND TODD BETH AND GARY 40 Don Dovre did a fine job as the Master of Ceremonies at coronation. He presented the two homeroom decora- tion awards with Mr. SIngie accepting the Junior High award and John Gehrking accepting the Senior High award for Mr. Schultz's homeroom. Entertainment was provided by Jeri Bockes who sung Evergreen and by a barbershop quartet formed by Lois Budahl Barb Wilde Sonja Madsen and Marlys Weber. Marlys and Sonja also sang a duet. RIGHT: The crown bearers were Shannon Denelsbeck and Jill Larson. FALL PLAY Theatre In The Round . . . This year's fall play was different in many respects. It was performed In the middle of the gym floor with au- dience seated on all sides. There were several prob- lems with this arrangement. The actors had to get used to facing all of the audience instead of the traditional front . The scene changes had to be done with lights, which were hung from the ceiling and mouted on posts. The lights also had to be positioned so that they didn't shine in the eyes of the audience. The content of the play was also different. It was a play about a group of high school students who are doing a play in which they get so involved that they sometimes forget where the play ends and real life begins. Altogether, Here and Now was an experience for all involved, both au- dience and actors. 42 FAR LEFT: Literally - the cast of the fall play! We were late starting be- cause we weren't sure who our advisor would be. Mr. Wornson got the job and we had to get going. We started by holding a yearbook sales week, and we made it easier to buy them by selling in the homeroom. We also sponsored two contests that week. Mr. Hoyme's homeroom won the Annual Annual Award or Triple A Trophy for buying the highest percentage of yearbooks. Craig Anshus won the free annual in the Place the Face contest. Congratula- tions! Then we painted our door so you knew who we are and got our window fixed so it would open and we could breathe. Thanks, Clifford! Picture days were hectic, but with everyone's cooperation we got you all taken. Then we had to decide what to put in our yearbook. It didn't take us long to find out that it was going to take us longer than we had thought, and soon we had worked right into the summer! Finally we got done, and there are many people we would like to thank. First of all, Mr. Wornson. Thank you for keeping us going when we got down, and for writing out all those passes when we needed to get in and work. Thank you, too, for taking time off your busy summer to proofread and type when we couldn't find anyone else. Next, thank you to our Junior Editors, Beth Miller and Gail Houtkooper. We worked you hard this year, and you learned a lot. We wish you the best of luck next year in attain- ing your goal of creating a successful yearbook. No yearbook is complete without pictures and the guy who took ours is Mr. Lindemann. Thanks so much for coming in and taking all those different pictures we needed, and then mak- ing them up Into so many different sizes. We must also thank Mr. Tobin for helping us schedule our picture days and for approving all those different ideas we had this year. And thank you to everyone else who helped us this year. We couldn't have done it without any of you! We hope you enjoy this yearbook and have lots of good memories of 1978! All the time we've spent In school, we've been together — learning together, laughing together, studying to- gether, and growing together. Even though we separate each summer, we can look forward to next year when we reunite to compare notes and exchange gossip. We won't really notice the small changes In each other, because we've all changed together. The year starts and, through our officers, our class orga- nizes dances, fund raising projects, and roller skating parties. The time passes too quickly, and summer Is here again, but we are not sad. Another fall will come, and we will look back and re- member how we were FINDING OUR- SELVES with our class In '77-'78. 70 CLASSES Seventh Grade Brings New Excitement President - David Christianson V. Memories of classes, of teachers, of friends, and of all that we've done together and meant to each other. We won't for- get this, our senior year, and we will always re- member the years we've spent together, but now Is a time for the future. As we look ahead, we see that there are multitudes of choices which should be made, and vast changes which need to be prepared for. Whether our plans Include mar- riage or college, vo-tech or getting a job, we can only hope that what we do will be right for us. Then, before we turn our backs on the past, we cast a wistful eye on what was. We look with pride at our accomplishments and with humor at our mistakes, and realize that our past has been good. So It Is in '77-'78 that we are still FIND- ING OURSELVES, not only at the end of our high school years, but at the beginning of our lives.
