Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1975 volume:

A Memories Memories are made of things That happen every day Moments as we live them Things we do or say Little bits and pieces Of laughter mixed with tears Paragraphs and pages Written through the years The carefree days of childhood The growing pains of youth A few illusions shattered In the endless search for truth The friendships we remember Mistakes that we regret Pile ending of a love affair ■Ve never could forget Yes, memories are happenings Each one a different kind Each one a separate chapter That is printed on the mind We can't erase the sadness Or edit out the tears We can't undo the wrongs we've done We can't relive the years But since memories keep buildi Each day can be the start Of making new and happy ones To store within the heart! By Alice E. Chase We, the editors Sharon Weber and Kim Burrell, wish to dedicate this annual to Gerry Gingles. Mr. Gingles teaches Phy. Ed. in grades 7, 9, and 12 and also teaches Health in Grade 10. Most of us, however, know Mr. Gingles as coach as he is the wrestling coach. Mr. Gingles became head coach of the wrestling team in 1966 and since then, he accumulated 23 first place trophies. Mr. Gingles is a terrific teacher, coach and friend. We are all privileged to know him. 2 TABLE A (F S ITS 1975 LANCER Seniors .................4- 17 Underclassmen ..........18- 29 School Life ............30- 47 Sports ................ 48- 64 Faculty ................65- 74 Activities .............75- 96 Graduation 97-100 Canby High School Canby, Minnesota Lancer Editors: Sharon Weber Kim Burrell Lancer Advisor: Mr. John Dahlager ROW Is JEANIE ALLECKSON LORENE ANTONY ROW 2: DOUG BAER MIKE BEECHER ROW 3: LOWELL BLISS TIM BLUE TODD BREDESON ROGER BROGAARD ROW 4: KIM BURRELL ROW 1: DONNA CITROWSKE SUSAN COLE MIKE COLGAN THERESA DESLAURIERS ROW 2: LARRY DEVOS RANDY DEVOS BILLY DRIESSEN ROW 3: STEVE DRIESSEN NANCY DRIETZ ROW 4: LARRY DUIS GARY DYBSETTER ROW 1: CINDY EISC HENS MARK ELLISON RANDY ESPING ROW 2: THOMAS ESPING JEANINE FULL ROW 3: JON GORDER MARY HAAS ROW 4: LORETTA HANSEN LORI HANSEN CINDY HANSON NANCY HANSON ROW 1 • ROW 1: CRAIG HAUGAARD ROW 2: CURT HOFFMAN JUDY HOFFMAN BEVERLY HOSECK MARK HOUGE ROW 3: REVA HOUTMAN RITA HOUTMAN ROW 4: SHEILA HRUBY LOWELL HUBBS ROW 1: CAROL HUBER WENDY JACOBSON ROW 2: ARLENE JELEN BRENDA JELEN GARY JELEN ROW 3: TOM JELEN GAIL JEREMIASON BRENDA JERZAK JOYCE JESME ROW 4: SHERRY JESME LORI JOHNSON ROW 1: KEVIN KACK RICKY KACK ROW 2: DIANE KAMRATH LORRAINE KERN SONJA KNUTSON STANLEY KNUTSON STANLEY KNUTSON ROW 3: TOM KREUZER DALE LARSON LOREN LAUCK NANCY LEESE ROW 4: SUSAN LIVINGSTON BONNIE MADSEN ALLAN MAMER ROW 1: DAN MAMER STEVE MAMER ROW 2: CHAIKI MATSUI TERRY MCMAHON LAURIE MEDHAUG MARGRET MELBY ROW 3: HARVEY MELROSE ROW 4: BOBBY MERRITT CINDY MEYER ROW 1: CINDY MILLER NANCY NEGAARD DEBRA NELSON ROW 2: LORI NELSON PEGGY NELSON ROW 3: MARY NICHOLS MARSHA NOMELAND ROW 4: JOHN NOYES KEVIN OCHOCKI DUANE ODENBRETT BRAD OLSON ROW 1: JUDY OLSON VICKIE OLSON ROW 2: ANN PETERSON DARLENE PETERSON JEANINE PETERSON ROW 3: JEFF PETERSON JERRY PRIDAL PHIL QUALLEY DAVID RECKOFF ROW 4: JAN RHEA DENISE RICKE ROW 1: PAT SAUM DEBRA SCHMIDT KATHY SCHRUNK ROW 2: DONNA SIMONSON RON SINGSAAS CONNIE SMITH SAUNDRA STENGEL ROW 3: DOUG STOKS JEFF STORLIEN KEVIN STREFF ROW 4: CHRIS SYLTIE SCOTT TETRICK THERESA THIELGES ROW 1: BRENDA THOMPSON BECKY THOVSON ROBERTA TIENTER ROW 2: TOM TOBIN BRAD TOLLAKSON CONNIE VANWATERMEULEN ROW 3: BOB HERVELST TOM VERHELST ROW 4: DONNY VERSCHELDE Verschelde ROW 1: JULIE VICTOR DARRELL WALTZ ROW 2: SHARON WEBER BARB WERNISCH ROW 3: BRENDA WILDE MARK WOLLUM PHYLLIS ZILLHART Juniors: Surging Forward To President: Ann Englund Vice President: Linda Dovre Secretary: Lynn Dreyer Treasurer: Milo Hovland Tomorrow BELOW: ROW 1: B. The king and queen candidates were paired up and marched in together for the cornation ceremony. Are Chosen For Homecoming Last year's queen, Laurie Holmund, gave a brief response about her reigning year. She asked us to come forward, and now, at this moment, the tension and excitement were greater than ever. I could hardly believe it when Laurie placed the robe on my shoulders! She then placed a robe on Pat Saum. We were then crowned. Pat was presented with a fifteen dollar certificate from the Student Council, I was given an autographed football from the team and also a dozen red roses from the Lettermen's Club. The following night was a very cold and windy one. In fact, our float was blown apart and couldn't be used. But the Lancers made up for it by defeating the Dawson Black Jacks. The Homcoming Dance followed, featuring The Cavemen -thus, completing the '74-'75 Homecoming festivities. Queen Cindy ABOVE LEFT: Queen Cindy giving her thank you speech. Jesme. 35 Homecoming week was a busy week for everyone. There were added pressures on the Home- coming candidates, worrying about the clothes they were going to wear and getting their flowers pinned on. Everybody worked hard on decorating and did a great job. On Thursday night Cindy was chosen queen and I was chosen king. Friday came and the team was ready. The Canby fans gave us lots of support and it helped. The of- fensive line, the defensive line and coaches deserve alot of credit for the win. Bertamus, Kockelman, and P. Olson com- bined to score the winning points. Thank you everybody and good luck to next year's football players. King Pat TOP LEFT: Shirley sings and Ann accompanies her. Untitled by Unanimous Student When I lay me down to study, I pray the Lord I don't go nutty. And if I fail to learn this junk I pray the Lord that I don't flunk. And when I die, don't pity me Just lay my body in an old, white B, And tell my teachers I did my best. And pile my bones upon their desk. So, now I lay me down to rest. And pray I'll pass tomorrow's test. And if I die before I wake. That's one less test I'll have to take. 46 What Will Tomorrow Bring? Life is full of ups and downs There is no guarantee Of what tomorrow holds in store And no one can forsee What sudden changes lie ahead What challenges we'll meet What hopes will reach fruition Which dreams end in defeat We often wish the book of life Would spread its pages wide So we could learn our destiny By what we read inside But this will never happen We were only meant to scan The pattern of existence In a shorter, smaller span Yes, as we look around us We find most lives contain A pretty equal measurement Of happiness and pain And if we make each hour Of every single day Important and fulfilling In some very special way We're sure to have a reservoir Of untapped energy To meet tomorrow's challenges Whatever they may be! Elephant Stew 1 elephant salt and peper brown gravy 2 rabbits (optional) Cut elephant into bite size pieces. This should take about two months. Cover with brown gravy. Cook over kerosene fire about four weeks at 460 degrees. This will serve 3800 people. If more are expected, two rabbits may be added, but do this ONLY if necessary, as most people do not like to find hare in their stew. 86 Members of the Senior High FHA are: ROW 1: J. Kontz, P. This year was full of small catastrophes but we finally put this annual together. We started the school year without an advisor so we didn't know where to begin. Mr. Dahlager was asked to do the honors and he reluctantly accepted. Many thanks to him for his help and supervision. On Picture Day, our photographer never showed up! We think there was a communication gap somewhere. Another picture day was scheduled, but due to a snowstorm and early dismissal quite a few pictures weren't taken. One weekend we also had some uninvited visitors in our little room. They enjoyed themselves so much that they decided to come back. Well, it was fun having to use a key to get into our room throughout the rest of the year. After those incidents, we were ready to give up, but we stuck it out anyway. Thanks to our Jr. Editors, Belinda and Sandy, for their help. Good luck next year. Thanks to our ID, Typing and Sales Staff for their help. Thanks to Mrs. Fransen for answering our questions. Her knowledge from past years as advisor helped us greatly. Last, but not least, thanks to our super photographers, Margret, Brenda and Lori. You did a terrific job! Thanks also to the student photographers and Mr. Wilde. We hope this annual brings back a few memories of 1974- 1975 both now and for years to come. Can you imagine how many times I said thank you? It is impossible to count. Canby people are so kind and friendly to me. Before I came here, I wondered whether I could spend a whole year without my folks and Japanese friends. But since I reached Canby last summer, I've never felt lonesome. It was so amazing to me because I've never been homesick. I'm sure it is because of Canby people's kindness. Any mom- ent they helped me have fun, study, helped with school activities, etc. In this year I learned much about American customs, but more than that, I learned about my country, Japan. Everyone asked me about my country, then I wanted to answer. If so, I had to think of that. Whenever we are in our own country, we hardly think about it because everyone knows as much as we do. Friendship----what an important thing it is. We are friends all over the world. Young kids should know each other by discussing, having fun and laughing together. I was so glad I could come to Canby and talk with so many people. I love Canby so much. Good luck to every single Canby person! I remember what it was like to be new around here... the place seemed a little bigger then, and though I never admitted it, a whole lot scarier! I remember searching hallways and stairways and auditoriums filled with unfamiliar faces, hoping to find someone to share my confusion with... and feeling so grateful whenever anyone smiled. For a while, I wondered how I was ever going to fit into this strange, super-sophisticated world... but now I wonder what I was so worried about... the confidence came... and so did the fun! What an assortment of unforgettable characters I've met here! There were classmates I liked right from the start, and those who took a little getting used to... There were teachers I loved, and teachers I survived... by Edward Cunningham There were upper-class celebrities who awed me with their style, and lower-class innocents who appeared to stand in awe of mine... Most of all, there were the good friends I made here... and all the together times we shared. I remember times when we won together, and times when we lost... times when we worried together, and times when we celebrated... but how do you ever say thanks for a mind-full of beautiful memories? It won't be easy saying good-bye to this school... to these friends... but I have so much more to learn about the world and about myself... and it's time to get started. I only know that wherever I go, whatever I do, the days I've spent right here will always be a really special part of my life... A Time To Remember i
