RETROSPECTION Old friendships enter the design of life More precious for the peace of mind Than worldly goods or treasure trove Objectively with love entwined. Then is the time that memories gather Like drifting mist at break of day As thoughts turn back the hands of time To grasp the past so far away. And like a kaleidoscopic pattern In retrospect the scenes unfold The happy times remembered well While poignant ones remain untold. So nurture well and clasp it close Lest like the evening's waning light The pictured past grows dim at last And all soon it fades from sight. Dwight G. McCarty EVENTS. . Lancer editors: Mariann Madsen and Michele Maynard Lancer Advisor: Mrs. Janet Fransen Our Teacher . . . Our Friend God gave to you that rarest gift, An understanding heart, A gentle, kindly manner Your wisdom to impart. Oh, some men build with steel and iron To pave their way to fame, But you are building character, A lasting tribute to your name. The lives you touch, the good you do Shall never know an end, And we are proud to call you... Our teacher and our friend. M. Griswold We, the editors, wish to dedicate the 1973 Lancer to Mr. Don Patzer, Mr. Ron Schultz, and Mr. Jim Wilde. We sincerely appreciate the effort that they have put into teaching here at Canby High School. It's difficult to describe them, but perhaps the best way is to say that these men are some of those special11 people. They have that unique ability to communicate with students in an open and meaningful way. We are proud to call them our teachers and our friends. Mariann and Michele The language of friendship is not words, but meanings. It is an intelligence above language. Thoreau 5 The Homecoming event this year was similar to the former year, each candidate chose their own escort. On the night of coronation everyone was very nervous and excited. At 7:30 p. m., each girl was escorted to the stage by her es- cort. When seated, Pat Verhelst, mistress of ceremonies, proceeded. A question was introduced to each girl con- cerning themselves, which helped to ease the tension. Homecoming BELOW: Marilyn Hoffman with escort, Roger Weber. Then Debbie Olson gave her speech and the coronation followed. We lined up on the stage in a row and Debbie placed the robe upon my shoulders. I was then crowned and given a dozen beautiful red roses from the Letterman's Club, and an autographed football from the football team. A bonfire followed the coronation. The next day, we played against the Granite Falls Kilo- watts and during half-time, the float was presented carrying the royalty. The Lancers were tremendous with a 34-6 win. The Home- coming Dance followed the game ending our Homecoming. Queen Marilyn ABOVE: 1972-73 Homecoming Queen Marilyn. ABOVE, LEFT: The suspense is over! It really gave both students and faculty a challenge. They began the complicated process of learning how to sing, dance, and act in a way that pleased both Mr. Reesnes and Mr. Juracek. What a Job! C.H.S. cheerleaders really lead the crowd Football demands self-discipline, self-confidence, highly developed skills, and loyalty to ones-self, teammates and coaches. These in- dividual qualities, when assembled into a team structure, will produce a group of players dedicated to doing their best for the collective better- ment of their team. Coach Dondelinger Why do men race against each other? Nobody can tell you why. It seems to be an instinctive part of the human temperament. In a way, the sport of track or cross country is like an iceberg. Competition is the part that everyone sees, while training is the much larger part below the sur- face. For every mile you will run in competition, you will probably run hundreds in training. Coach Bredeson In the game of basketball, morale, skill, confidence, and the will to win are vitally important. Team in- telligence and the ability to take advantage of game opportunities are necessary for championship play. In summary, all of basketball starts with, endures with, and ends with the player. Coach Martinson The challenge of individual com- petition, development of a life-long recreation skill, and enjoyment of the outdoors leads young people to play golf. In 1968 we had another new building The present Canby High. In '70 we started the mod And gave it a real good try. In 1972 we had a ball Class play, The Theft of the Belt. M. M. and M. M. 92 FAREWELL When the sun fails to rise in the morning, when the beauty of the bird's song is lost, When all our words are only for scorning, Then, then has man finally paid the cost? If time begins to slip past unnoticed, If life no longer has any meaning, If there is no care for what we have missed, Then, then is civilization leaning? As the last lone eagle sails over head, As the once proud man is forced to now beg, As the hope for peace and freedom is dead Then, then have we journeyed our last leg? Yes, then there is nothing more left to do, but give up the searching for something new. J.M. WAR There is love and there is hate Inside each man. This makes for a constant battle. Should hate conquer in the final siege Only bitterness and lonely memories remain. But when love overpowers; there is joy And serenity and the gladness of a new day. P.N. Happiness Is CHORUS: Happiness is, happiness is, happiness is, Different things to different people. There is a song in my heart Yet a tear in my eye, As the day comes nearer For our last good-by. We've grown up together Through bad times and good. And now graduation Marks an end, as it should. But whatever may follow In life-till the end, We do have the comfort That we'll always be friends. P.N. PUFF Yes, he stares at me when it's pin-drop still; The Cars all-knowing gaze penetrates my room, Should I copy his independent will, Behave calmly while I secretly fume? Maybe correcting yourself is a start; Then working within but not to destroy, Tho silent, I may be taking some part In th e Watergate brand of mindless ploy. Is acting your Personal right enough? Some aware cats sigh and simper, Rubble, The government must make or bend rules, tough For vocal militants who cause trouble. I cringe, but Puff's an animal type Cat; Today's food and shelter keep his world pat. K.Q. To Zif Haugen it's a set of tapes, To Jeff Ailts it's a Cochrane Lake, To Lance Armo it's a football game, To Lardo Hacker it's his wrestling fame. CHORUS To the Kallhoffs it's a motor bike, To Julie Kindelberger it's a speech she likes, To Michele Maynard it's a student play, To Squirrel Olson it's a holiday. CHORUS To VonSpreecken it's a higher door, To Mark Hruby it's a basketball floor, To Pat Verhelst it's the FHA, To Carla Wellnitz it's the German way. CHORUS To Mike Osmond it's a hole in one, To Doug Swenson it's a race he's won, To Todd Alleckson it's his brain first rate, To the Seniors it's to graduate. 93 CHORUS Aufwiedersehen Confucious once said: Everything has its beauty but not everybody sees it. Coming to Canby made me see the beauties of a small town in America. When these beauties became less obvious, people helped me to find them. The year is just rushing by without time to get homesick, filled with things like trips to the cities, a special one to Mankato, attending school where I felt like in a big family, the choir trip, girls' nights out, living at Qualleys (!), quiet moments at home (?), talking with people that mean alot to me, visiting a farm, looking at animals, bams, old windmills, taking pictures, and feeling like a reporter. And this hardly begins the list of all the wonderful things I experienced. One of the greatest things I learned during this past year is the way to make friends. I never before realized how diffi- cult it is, but now I know that deep down we all are butter- flies . Together with all my friends, I did alot of new, strange but fun things. . .things I cherish forever in my memories of Canby and the people. A thousand thank-you's could not express how much it meant to me. It saddens me to think of leaving Canby and returning to Germany, however, I have a saying from Pablo Casals that I like to share with you: The love of one's country is a natural thing. But why should love stop at the border? with love, Carla BELOW: Carla Wellnitz make her home in Canby with the Qualley family; Phil, Kay (holding Buns ), Carla, Ruth (holding Sparky), and John.
