After the little struggle I came here to Canby. The Americans were not too different from the Danes. The language was pretty hard in the beginning and I had big difficulties in following them when they started to talk fast or use all their slang. Really, cool, are you kidding, and that kind of expressions I had never heard before. I also found out that Americans mostly eat hamburgers, pizza, or jello, or drink Coke. The school here is much better than in Denmark. You have sports teams, cheerleaders, pepfests, choirs, bands, and more things that make the school much more personal and therefore much more fun. We never use yearbooks in Danish schools either. I really enjoy my stay here in Canby and everybody is always so kind to me. At last I will say many thanks to the kids and teachers in CHS and also to the rest of the community because they have made this great experience possible for me. Thank you. The Senior High Student Council was reorganized this year so that membership was voluntary rather than by election. This situation works out really well because we enjoy being involved and con- cerned with it. Our main project was revising the Homecoming procedure and it was fun trying to think up new ideas. Money-making is always a problem. It's awfully hard to sponsor dances without money but we did try hard to get enough money together so that we could have most of our scheduled dances. Student Council is pretty special to us because it's really our only voice in school matters. Schubert's Mass in G, which we sang for the Christ- mas Concert and recorded, was definitely a challenge, but it was worth the pain when we finally gave oui concert. Even though our hope to tour Europe fell through, our annual choir trip to the Cities was still fun. Makes all those hours of sore feet and forgotten diets during the candy sales worth- while. The Homecoming Royalty anxiously await the big moment. one of those exciting times. The Homecoming procedures were new and different this year. This year, instead of the regular two marshalls, each of us chose our own escort. On the night of coronation, everyone was very nervous. The escorts, who were supposed to calm us down, seemed to need the most support. When all had finally made it to their places on the stage, with no injuries, the master of ceremonies, Gene Benson, took over. He introduced the former queens that were present. Each of us were given a question to answer, which helped to ease the tension for us. Then Jo Cornell gave her speech and the coronation followed. When Jo placed the robe on my shoulders, the long waiting was over. I was then crowned, given a dozen red roses from the Letterman's Club, a bracelet from the Student Council, and an autograph- ed football from the football team. After the corona- tion there was a bonfire at which all the royalty gave a little pep talk. The next day, we played Ortonville. The weather was rainy and windy, but it did stop raining at the end of the second quarter. At half time the en- tertainment was the float, decorated by the Senior class, carrying the royalty. The Lancers were vic- torious with a 14-6 win. The Homecoming Dance followed the game ending our Homecoming. Of course, after the hours and hours and HOURS of practice we expected it to be. We'll never forget the afternoons and evenings we spent making the set. We had to have some crash courses in putting on make-up and producing sound and lightning effects but we're quick learners. We also learned the art of quick repair, especially when run-away gongs wipe out the lightning lights. Right, Jon? in “the theft of the belt ” Nothing in life is to be feared. Lao-Tse TO THE SENIORS 1972 Four years within these halls Days and memories beyond recall How often I dreaded those dreary days Plans that I made, I changed the next day My brain never focused, it tended to stray. I think of the world and all of its ills My memory so clouded, I felt in a daze How often I thought, if I only could MFly like a bird and surely I would. I would fly to the most distant place garget about man and the whole human race Four years are short in the life of a man And hope for a plan that I could fulfill. Someday, not too far off I hope Develop a plan with which I can cope. My how quickly the days have sped. The future is mine, which I no longer dread The ills of the world are a challenge you see And life without challenge, a man never will see by Mr. Killen This is not primarily the place where we have to be it is the place where we are. This is not our prison but our home. It is the road we must walk and the walking of it is called life. Because we will walk it only once, then how important it is that we should walk it with some purpose that we can call our own.
