MISGIVINGS When ocean-clouds over inland hills Sweep storming in late autumn brown, And horror the sodden valley fills, And the spire falls crashing in the town, I muse upon my country's ills— The tempest bursting from the waste of Time On the world's fairest hope linked with man's foulest crime. 2 Contents FOREWORD ................2 DEDICATION ..............4 SENIORS..................5 UNDERCLASSMEN ...........23 ACTIVITIES ..............35 ATHLETICS...............51 ORGANIZATIONS ...........65 FACULTY ................89 ADMINISTRATION ..........97 3 Dedication We, the editors, Nancy Denelsbeck and Linda Boulton, respectively dedi- cate the 1970 Lancer to Mr. Alfred Reesnes. In 1959, Mr. Reesnes became the new vocal-director at Canby High School. We sincerely appreciate the assistance he has given to all students, especially those in vocal music, throughout the past 11 years. 4 Moebeck Leads Senior Class NICHOLAS ALLEN LAUREEN ANDERSON NANCY ANDERSON Pictured ABOVE is Gordy Rangaard. The theme of his speech was Trips to Exciting Places which was enjoyed by everyone. The Commencement Exer- cises were well attended. The student speaker was Mark Moebeck who gave a humorous talk on the years leading up to our big day. Along with the speakers, we owe our thanks to the Choir, which sang You'll Never Walk Alone , and to the Band which played Exodus. Lyle Tobin presented the Class of 1970, and B. Madsen proceeded to hand out the diplomas to 138 eager graduates. Knowledge Comes From Learning These students gained recognition as honor students by maintaining a 3. 25 average throughout their senior high years. TOP: LEFT TO RIGHT: N. Denelsbeck, K. Graner, A. Although Genny Boucquet, our AFS Student was not with us long enough to become an actual honor student, she was recognized for her outstanding achievements. Thanks go to Curt Melby, Joanne Henningsgaard, Mary Kruezer, and Mike Andert for acting as Marshalls during the Commencement Exercises this year. They did a real great job! Remember This! Great is the power of might and mind, But only love Can make us kind and all we are or hope to be is empty pride and vanity . . . if love is not a part of all, The Greatest Man Is Very Small! Alan Kamrath and Brenda Saltee were recognized as being distinct honor students. To achieve this, they had to keep a 3. 66 average through senior high. SEVENTH GRADE CLASS OFFICERS: LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Monson. Last year's queen, Diane Anderson, puts the robe on Linda's shoulders designating her as the new 1969-70 queen. Sheila Warwick applauds the student bodies' choice. 37 BONFIRE, GAME, DANCE Homecoming for this year was set off by the coronation Thursday evening in the gym. It was well attended by the student body and others eager to see who the 1969-70 queen would be. The seven girls were attended by marshals Stuart Melby and Ron Weber. Diane Anderson, the 1968-69 queen, kept us in suspense before she finally ended her reign by putting the robe on Linda Boulton. The coronation ceremony was followed by the bonfire at the football field. The royalty, team, and students were all enthusiastic about Friday's game with Clarkfield. RIGHT: Terry Blanchette led the float at half- time wearing the traditional outfit of a lancer and riding his horse. Eli's Coming! During the half of the game, the royalty was introduced to the spectators. They rode around the football field on a float made by the senior class. Other half-time entertainment was the majorettes and the marching band. (L TO R) P. Ufkin, B. Lootens, W. Monson, B. Saltee, S. Melby, L. Boulton, K. Borowski, R. Weber J. Denekamp, S. Warwick, P. The Lancers demonstrated excellent team play and manuevers against the Clarkfield team during the Homecoming Game, October 3, 1969. Canby appeared to have the game until the fourth quarter when the Cards came up to win it 20-13. 39 H King Jeff And Queen Jenny Reign The royalty for Snow Days started with the announcement of sophomores; Princess Sue Full and Prince Dale Henningsgaard. Linda DeBettignes and Duane Bicek took the honor of representing the junior class for the 1970 Snow Days Festivities. Snow Day's Festivities AT THE LEFT enjoying the dance and band are Scott Thorson, Cindy Christianson, Genevieve Boucquey, and Laurie Wiest. OPPOSITE PAGE: King Jeff Winkels and Queen Genevieve Boucquey. They represented the senior class. The Junior- Senior Banquet Set The Pace Of The Evening Our speaker at the banquet, Mr. Robert Deyak, reminisced about the good old days before we had our new building. His talk was very entertaining and we enjoyed being reminded of past experi- ences. RIGHT: D. Monke and S. Thovson serve Mr. Deyak and his wife. The banquet began at 6:30. As is the custom, only ju- niors, seniors, and faculty were invited. Part of the program included several popular songs sung by Mark Moebeck, Mr. Reesnes, and Mr. Nelson. They helped get us in tbe mood for the dance. RIGHT: G. Kloos, R. Antony, S. Loken, P. Ufkin, P. Maertens, and N. King. SEATED at the speaker's table were D. Bicek, junior class president, and his date, L. Anderson. M. Moebeck, se- nior class president, and his date, P. Miller, were also at the honored table. Both class leaders made a few remarks. 42 Members of the sophomore class served as waiters and waitresses. They were dressed very much like the natives of a Tahitian island, grass skirts and all. They efficiently served the main course, beverages, and dessert. The meal was prepared by the juniors’ mothers. BELOW: On the left side of the table are S. Plageman, L. Stoks, H. Gehrking. On the right side are A. Vern- lund, J. West, K. Swenson, J. Denekamp, K. King, L. Boulton. Every senior received an invitation to the banquet from the junior class. There was a lei, a copy of the senior class will, and a copy of the prophesy at each place. ABOVE: R. Wieneke, B. Peterson, P. Ruth, G. Coil, and C. Pictured, LEFT TO RIGHT: Doug Lueders with his date, Kathy Han- son; Ken Bacher and Kathy Swenson; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Leppke. The band came from St. Paul and they were called Free and Easy. Everyone agreed that they had been the best band ever! We, the seniors, take this opportunity to thank all the juniors for organizing such a beautiful prom. It has been one that we will never forget. 44 Band Captures Crowd AT THE LEFT is, Jr. Class Pres. , D. Bicek, L. Anderson. The band, Free and Easy is pictured below. The punch was served by the sophomore waiters and waitresses in the cafe, which was set off from the dance floor. 45 Post-Prom Follows ABOVE: A. F. S. student Genny Boucquey, Jack Mead, Nancy Voigt, and Mike Waltz enjoy the program. Some of the speaker's remembrances included Jack. RIGHT AND BE- LOW: Tables and chairs were set up where we could catch our breath between dances. Those who didn't trust their memories completely took pictures of the scenery and dec- orations. Many emotions are felt before, during, and after prom. First comes the anticipation, the new dress, the hair-do, and the corsage. Of course, the juniors have all the planning and decorating to do. Then there is the excitement of the banquet and dance, movie, bowling, and breakfast. Finally, when its all over you feel exhausted and somehow sad because it went so fast. To many, prom is the high-light of the entire year. To the seniors, it is the signal of the end of their high school days. It was well worth the preparation and work that went into it. 46 All-School Play Has Its Moments The Swing Band provided the background music for Dates and Mates. TOP TO BOTTOM: G. Mathison, S.
