lives of great men a we can make our lives and depart leave behind us footprints in the sands of time.” longfellow lancer canby high school canbv, minnesota Editors: Valorie Gilbertson Nancy Denekamp Advisor: 2 Miss Susan Peterson our year in review August 26, 1968, set before us a new school year, presenting students an opportunity to renew old friendships and seek new ones. Entering the doors, we found ourselves reluctant to give up the fleeting hold we had on summer vacation. Yet, before us was a challenge to make the 1968-69 school year the best ever. Among the maze of halls and classrooms, we took up the spirit of CHS. From fall's adjustments to winter's pattern, the period bell led us. Mountains of snow, however, ef- fectively broke winter's schedule to the delight of most students. But even the snow days got to be too many, and school had to be extended a week into June. Spring arrived a little late, but brought along its customary burst of activity. Before long, everyone had more to do than he could possibly do in the time given. But, we had youth and energy on our side, and we made it to the end of die school year. Seniors left CHS forever; underclassmen only took a re- prieve. Some were saddened to leave. Others were eager to meet a new phase in their lives. All had acquired a deeper respect for and gratitude to Canby High School. 3 Mr. Wilde, Miss Anders, and Mr. Klaphake pose for our camera. dedication Canby High School seniors owe a deep respect to our senior class advisors, Miss Elizabeth Anders, Mr. Clement Klaphake, and Mr. James Wilds. In addition to teaching, these three members of the faculty have devoted their time, attention, and genuine interest to the senior class. Their guidance has been their example. MISS ELIZABETH ANDERS joined the Canby High Faculty in 1965. As an English teacher, she has led us through Shakespeare and appositives to give us a literary flavor in life. MR. CLEMENT KLAPHAKE joined the CHS teaching staff in 1966 to extend to his students a knowledge of historical evolution. In November of 1968, Mr. Klaphake was called to the armed ser- vice, but kept us informed on the 'boot camp' basics. MR. JAMES WILDE first entered the Canby School system in 1958, and things haven't been the same since. He brought vitality and vigorous studying to his chemistry and physics classes. For their much-appreciated service to CHS, we respectfully dedicate the 1969 LANCER to our Senior class advisors. 4 moments of distinction0 Everyone is as God made them and sometimes a great deal worse. Perhaps the most publicized activity car- ried on by the club is the annual Spaghetti Supper. The girls, advisor, chapter moth- ers, and volunteer mothers spend many hours in preparation of the big event. Other fund raising activities sponsored by the club are the cookbook sales, and concession booth sales during ball games. This money is used to send delegates to the state con- vention, girls to camp, and for the annual spring trip. During the year the girls were kept busy making Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter favors for the Senior Haven. Along with this the girls make Christmas cookies to send to the hometown boys who are spending Christmas in Viet Nam. In the spring, a tea is held to honor the grad- uating chapter members, outstanding mem- bers, and the chapter mothers. Senior High FHA Officers are: STANDING: M. Traen, P. Hoff- man, J. Verhelst, V. The cheerleaders work through the summer and on through the school year preparing pepfests and com- posing new pep yells. These girls give tlie spirits of the student body a boost when they need lifting, discourage bad sportsmanship and lead the cheering sections through the exciting and tense games and matches. They, along with the student body, contribute towards the confidence needed by a team to have the winning seasons C. H. S. had this past year. Clockwise: P. Maertens, B. Nel- son, P. Miller, S.
