The first day brings many new things to highlight the beginning of a new school year. It is about the only time the lockers are clean, and new shoes en- counter freshly waxed floors with the inevitable resulting. The old and new combine to make a very exciting and eventful opening day. It is these memories, and the memories from the days that follow, that are now extended to you, and into the future, through the 1968 LANCER. The 1968 Lancer Canby High School Canby, Minnesota Editors: Barb MeIzer Betty Thorpe A d visor: Mr. Harold Slocum Table of Contents Foreword I Dedication 4 Activities 5 A thletics 45 Faculty 59 Underclassmen 69 Seniors 83 Farewell 100 Dedication Canby High School students who have ever been absent from school during the past year were greeted by Mr. Saum upon their return. It is only because the beginning of his day was spent issuing, what must have seemed like a million, make-up slips. Joining the Canby school system in 1961, as a physical education instructor, he took over the duties of head football coach and later those as athletic director. For his never-ending service to CHS and its students, we are proud to dedicate the 1968 LANCER to MR. ESTLE SAUM. 4 ACTIVITIES and ORGANIZATIONS Members of Queen Lori's court were Judy Bakke, Mary Severson, Marsha Jahn, Cindy Jacobson, Karen Beyer, and Mary Winkels. Pictured in the FOREGROUND is 1966-67 Queen, Linda Brogaard. Marshals were Paul Han- son and Keith Anderson. Lori Reigns A t Homecoming Events The solemnness of the occasion is shown here in the faces of flower girl Julie Christie and crown bearer Timmy Ostroot. Happiness, to Lori Citrowske, is .........being designated the Canby Lancers' 1967 Homecom- ing queen. Lori's reign becomes official as the out going queen, Linda Brogaard, places the crown on Lori's head. After the band's routine in the half-time activities, Queen Lori and her court rode around the field on a float made earlier that week by fellow classmates and members of the royalty. Half-time Activities Highlight Game Despite the 32-13 loss at the hands of Granite Falls, the Lancer fans remained faithful to the game's end. The music for the Home- coming dance was provided by a four piece jazz ensemble, called the ACCENTS. To add to the excitement, the senior's class window won first prize in the window display contest. The Homecoming dance, held in the high school gymnasium after the football game, will remain a pleasant memory in the minds of all those in at- tendance. 11 The Juniors chose Diane Anderson and Darrel Wicks for their representatives. Representing the Sophomores in the Snow Days activities were Shelia Warwick and Bob Snortum. Snow Days Royalty Crowned A t Dance OPPOSITE PAGE: King Jerry Hoff- man and Queen Maria Carrera. Shortly after their coronation, the members of the court danced a royalty dance. Music for the dance was provided by The Mid- night Raiders. 13 LEFT: As H-hour approaches for the 1968 Banquet, the Dutch waiters and waitresses rest during the calm before the storm. Wooden Shoes Go Walking An affirmative YES was given by every member of the head table, when asked if they enjoyed the Banquet. After the murder of his pupil, the professor gets a scolding from his housekeeper. “The Under the direction of Miss Kelly, the one-act pfay received a superior rating in the District 9 competition. The play, The Lesson , was a short comedy about a professor, his pupil, and the professor's housekeeper. The play presented a new and different ap- proach to student-teacher relationships, Lesson” with the professor getting the last word. The professor was played by Dale Hutchcraft, the pupil portrayed by Mary Severson, and the part of the profes- sor’s housekeeper was played by Mary Erp. Getting ready for the performance is just as important a part of the play as knowing the lines and the action of the play. Shown here, the eve- ning the performance was given to the Speech classes, Miss Kelly ap- plied part of the make-up required by Mary Erp's part. For entertainment, the paper included the latest jokes and humor- ous articles. One such article was based on the question: If I gave you a Srecnal--what would you do with it? Bewildered students and teachers came up with a variety of answers. What should you do with a Srecnal? Support it? Of course, it is only Lancers spelled backwards! The Junior editors were D. To Marlys, and the memories we have of her, we pay tribute. 95 To Maria, her first Prom was a dream-like event, possibly the last chance for her to enjoy herself with the entire junior and senior classes. An experi- ence rare in Argentina, the evening of May 4, 1968, will long be a happy memory to Maria Carrera. Maria Represents the A FS Program in Maria helped Mr. and Mrs. Sim Melzer, Beatrice, and Barb spend an exciting and educational year. 97 David Dybsetter, chosen by the 126 seniors of the Class of '68 to represent them during the Com- mencement ceremony, prepared his address with the utmost of ease and greatness. To Dave goes the class' thanks for the effort he put in to pre- senting such an enlightening address. Your Investment in Education was the topic of the Commencement Address given by Dr. Paul Cashman. Dr. Cashman, Vice-President for Student Affairs at the University' of Minnesota, presented an address long to be remembered by' the senior class. The Strength to Build To become honor students, these seventeen seniors received a 3. 25 grade point average during their high school days: ROW 2: S. Denelsbeck, A. Reiners, S. Kamrath, D. A Rich Tomorrow What does the distant fu- ture hold . . . This wond- rous world in which we dwell . . .Is shaped and guided on its course, by youthful hearts that wish it well . . . The dream that shines in a graduate's eyes . . . Are visions of a world to be . . .In which deeds spin from faith's bright strands . . .Will keep the nation strong and free . . . From their hope we borrow . . . The strength to build a rich tomorrow. With happiness in her face Maria Carrera, Canby's AFS student, accepts her diploma from Mr. Bernard Madsen, Chairman of the Canby Board of Ed- ucation. 99 Hail Canby High School, noble and strong. To thee with loyal hearts we raise our song. Our faith unquenchable through the years will ring.
