Linda's reign was made official when Jackie placed the crown on her head. Coronation Highlights Homecoming The Homecoming Royalty for 1966 are: Kitty Winkels, Lori Melrose, Kaye Kraft, Queen Linda Brogaard, Nancy Atkins, Maria Vargas, Vicki Sigurdson. 17 Jackie Thompson, queen for 1965, returned to participate in the festivities of 1966 Homecoming. Queen Linda is escorted to the music of Huldingungsmarch, by marshalls Dan Swanson and Clayton iMelby. Memorable Events Of Homecoming ’66 Scott Gilbertson and Nancy Bursack were chosen by the royalty as crown - bearer and flower girl. The In-Mates, a group from Minneapolis, set the beat for the Homecoming Dance. Each girl in the royalty gave a pep-talk at the bonfire. Initiating the Homecoming spirit for 1966 were Orange-and-Blue Day and V-for-Victory Day. Enthusiasm was displayed by team members, queen candidates, and the student body at the bon- fire on Thursday night. Friday's activities were highlighted by the coronation in the afternoon. Suspense mounted as Jackie Thompson designated Linda Brogaard as queen for 1966. Team co-captains Bob Braucher and Dan Schalek then presented Queen Linda with a bouquet of roses. Half-time activities began with the marching band performing a routine. Following this Queen Linda and her royal court were presented to the fans while the marching band played Miss America. The Lancers demonstrated excellent team- work and maneuvers against Dawson. They defeated the Blackjacks by the way-out score of 58-14. Everyone was exuberant at the dance follow- ing the outstanding victory. Music was provided by the In-Mates. When the doors closed at 12:30, all agreed that Homecoming 1966 was one of the best ever. Senior team members appear- ed to be in high spirits and confident of victory. Lori Melrose and Kaye Kraft revert back to their childhood ways and share a lol-li-pop. Sadie Hawkins” Live music was provided at the Sadie Hawkins Dance by pressmen from St. Paul. Daisy-Mae Ingvalson goes a-hunting for her man, Bartender Quenroe, to get by hook or by crook from Gramma Nordseth. the Junior High Hobo Day winners, Peggy Spittle, Ruth Fairchild, and Diane Carrette, clown around on the stairway. Mr. Keesnes led the student body in a Christmas sing-along on the Thurs- day before vacation, aided by the choir. Other pre-holiday activities in- cluded the choir concert earlier in the week, GAA caroling, and the Christmas Ball Thursday night in the gym. Students Fill Canby With Christmas Cheer The Canby Commercial Club again decorated the streets this year to add to the festive spirit. The lighted Christmas tree by the office greeted everyone as they passed by it on their way to class. 21 Snow Days 1967 was held the week-end of February 3-4. The Royalty, consisting of Jeanne Denelsbeck and Dan Schalek, Queen and King; Mary Winkels and Mark Henningsgaard, junior Princess and Prince; and Diane Thovson and Curt Englund, sophomore Princess and Prince; was announced at a pepfest on Friday afternoon. They reigned over the basketball game on Saturday night, in which the Lancers were victorious over the Marshall Tigers 69-36. Following the game, a dance was held in the gym, with music provided by the Henchmen. A blizzard Saturday night provided the topping for the week-end. DAN and JEANNE MARK and MARY CURT and DIANE 22 Queen Jeanne and King Dan lead the couples in dancing to Kind of a Drag. Snow Days Adds To Mid-Winter Fun Mick tosses another one in to help defeat the Marshall Tigers 69-36. The Henchmen are pictured below performing their version of Talk, Talk , with Steve Ruth on organ, Elroy Quenroe on sax, Jim Yackley on drums, Tom Tange on bass guitar, and Lon Ufkin singing. 23 A vocal selection was provided by Dan Kelly, Paul Evanson, and Norman Larsen. Evening In Paris” The long awaited, dream-like evening, May 6th, started in the Elementary school cafetorium, decorated in a Parisian motiff. After introduc- tions by Dave Dybsetter, the master of cere- monies, Elroy Quenroe and Craig Zinter gave short addresses. Following the meal of turkey prepared by the Junior mothers and served by the Sophomores, Sharon Hayek and Vicki Sigurdson gave short talks. The entertainment consisted of vocal selec- tions by a boy's trio and vocal and guitar selec- tions by Judy Abel. Following the entertainment the guest speaker, Mr. Warren Andert, gave his remarks, and Mr. Donald Peterson gave the clos- ing. Moving to the high school gym the Prom goers found the Evening in Paris theme recreated through the use of a sidewalk cafe, painter and art gallery, flower garden, and an Eiffel Tower. The evening was officially started at 9:15 when the Starliners provided the music for the Grand March. After the Prom a special show, after-show buffet, and bowling were sponsored by the Women's Club. Tiie Sophomores, dressed to fit the Parisian motiff, served the dinner to the people present at the Jr. - Sr. Banquet. 24 The Art Gallery featured Artist Joey Lux. The Starliners, featuring a female vocalist, provided ballroom music for the dancers. The Grand March was led by Bruce Melby and Florene Wallert, Elroy Quenroe and Nancy Meinzer, Larry Grong and Sharon Hayek, Brennan Hayek and Vicki Sigurdson, and Dave Dybsetter and Cheryl W illgohs. To carry out the Parisian theme an Eiffel Tower was reconstructed in the center of the gym. Punch was served by the Sophomore waiters and waitresses in the Sidewalk Cafe. 25 The One-Act Play entitled The Undercurrent was chosen as runner- up in the District 9 One Act Play Con test. The cast includes: Miss Greuhl, director, holding the trophy; Bob Winkels, Pa Fishyer; Judy Abel, Ma Fishyer; Larry Grong, Emil Fishyer; Sue Ingvalson, Annie Fishyer ; Jane Thovson, Miss Floyd; Lori Melrose, Miss Page. Pa explodes in a rage when he finds out that Annie has been taken to court and hurls her and her mother on the floor. The Undercurrent” Ma brags about her two children, while Pa prefers to re- main silent. The Undercurrent is essentially a portrayal of a cypical evening in the Fishyer's apartment in New York City. Mrs. Fishyer is rather idealistic, and wants to hear only good about her child- ren, while Mr. Fishyer believes that MAN iss ruled vid de vhip! He be- comes irat when his meddlesome neigh- bor woman informs him that his daugh- ter, Annie, whom he has brought up so strict, has been arrested and taken to the morals court. However, Mr. Fish- yer's ranting subsides when a social worker who has been sent to check on Annie, and whom Mr. Fishyer trusts, offers to take Annie with her for a vacation in the country. Annie leaves, although her father has almost wrecked her life and happiness. Musical Plenty Production Of Money” Mr. Anderson and the Swing Band accompanied the soloists and chorus and provided intermis- sion music. The five F .B.I. agents sing the laurels of J. Edgar Hoover while the President of the bank and Arthur look on. When Knuckles, Lefty, Killer and Horace, the pride of the underworld, descend on Saginaw City, they little realize that they will be no match for Grandma Maude (fane Thovson) and her ancient cron- ies. Caught in the middle of the commotion is grand- son Arthur (Bruce Melby), who finds himself running from the Marry Me! daughter (Sue Ingvalson) of his employer (Dan Kelly) and five diligent members of the the F.B.I. From this walloping humor come such musical hits as You Gotta Belong To A Union, Certain Things, Blame Our Parents, and the Testimonial Dinner. All the complications of the plot are cleverly resolved, but not until the laughter has put that stitch in your side and the music has given you that want to dance feeling. The entire cast of Plenty of Money is pictured below. The play was directed by Miss Anders, Mr. Reesnes, and Clayton Melby, student director, with Mr. Anderson directing the Swing Band. 27 The cast of the Junior Class play includes: STANDING, Barb Melzer - Student Director; Rick Ohlsen - Henry Gilcrest; Dick Thomas - Dr. Earnest; Tom Andert - C. E. Grimm; Mary Erp - Aunt Ethel; Mr. Ostroot - Director. Deadly Earnest I'm with you, Henry! The plot of this three-act comedy revolved around the hero, Henry Gilcrest. Shortly after the play opened Henry lost his room, his job, his girl, and in desper- ation gave Mr. Bumpus all his money, $17.83, to put him out of his misery. But, to Henry's amazement, he gets back his job, room, his girl, and in hilerious comedy he and Mr. Bumpus settle their differences and the play ends on a happy note. Mrs. Gilcrest, Henry locked himself in his room and is just pacing back and forth, back and forth. Kitty Winkels and Carol Saltee devoted much time and energy toward the betterment of the annual. The Lancer Staff Preserves The Year Mary Winkels and Barb Melzer, Junior Editors, became acquainted with the job of editing an annual. At the beginning of the year, Senior High students voted to change to a summer-delivery annual. Thus, this year's Lancer has the spring sports, music contests, Prom, and Graduation included. The Business staff did very well in pro- moting sales. A record number of books, 560, was sold this year. Lynn Devorak was high salesman. Pages of the book were sent to the publisher to meet four deadlines. This demanded con- tinued effort and long hours by the various staffs. We hope you enjoy it. 30 The Identification Staff has the res- ponsibility of correctly identifying the individuals pictured. STANDING: N. Bicek, J. Livingston, N. Atkins. SEATED: J. Snortum, L. After losing to Granite Falls in the conference opener, the Lancer squad defeated the next three opponents to remain in contention for the conference title. Defeats by Appleton and Madison later in the season, however, placed the Lancers in a tie for third place in the final confer- ence standings with a 3-3 record. Congrats are due to Darwin Hillman, Bob Winkels, and Donn Peterson for gaining honorable mention on the list of the Ail State Team. The 1966 squad was made up of fifteen seniors, eight juniors, and ten sophomores. Returning next year will be nine lettermen. G. Mead, B. Winkels, M. Thompson, D. Peterson, D. Hillman, T. Clark, R. John- son . The 1966-1967 basketball season was the best season the Lancers have had for many years. The final record of 13 wins and 5 losses also included a 10-2 record in the Little Sioux Conference and a championship tie. The team showed steady improvement all year. After losing three of their first five games, the Lancers bounced back to win 11 of their last 13, including their last seven in a row. During this stretch they avenged all of their earlier defeats except one. There were many highlights throughout the year. These included defeating Appleton twice, whipping Marshall 69-36, and, of course, the Conference Championship. Two seniors. Donn Peterson and Mickey Thompson and one junior, Tom Andert were named to the all-conference team. Donn Peterson was the team’s Most Valuable Player. Seven lettermen will graduate and leave many large holes to fill for next year. They are: Darwin Hillman, Mickey Thompson, Donn Peterson, Tom Clark, Bob Winkels, Gordy Mead, and Roland John- son. Four junior lettermen, Tom Andert, Warren Fritz, Jim Wink- els, and Rich Ohlsen will return and give us a good nucleus to build around. They, along with Jim Harms, Paul Hanson, Keith Anderson, and a group of sophomores hope to give us another good season next year. May 25, 1967, Will Be A Day Facing her graduation with mixed emotions, Maria clasps her diploma proudly. The last week at CHS for the Class of 1967 be- gan with Baccalaureate Services on Sunday evening. Pastor Swanson gave an inspiring speech entitled You Need More. When Commencement arrived on Thursday evening, many of the seniors had mixed emotions of sadness and joy. They marched in to the music of Pomp and Circumstance. Musical selections dur- ing the program included You'll Never Walk Alone by the choir and Chorale and Capricio by the band. Tom Clark gave the Senior Address and R. Galen Hanson, guest speaker, challenged the seniors in his address to them. Following the pre- sentation of the diplomas by Board of Education President, Mr. Bernard Madsen, the audience sang the Canby School Hymn. As the last strains of the recessional faded away, another class passed from the halls of CHS out into a new world. 86 The Junior Marshals, as chosen by the senior class of- ficers, escorted the seniors up the aisle for one last time. They are: Karen Beyer, Keith Anderson, Sharon Hayek, and Mark Henningsgaard. Long Remembered By The I I 8 Seniors C. Galen Hanson, guest speaker at Commence- ment, chose as his topic, ’’Renew Your High School Diploma.” A native of Benson, Minnesota, he is presently working on his Doctorate Degree. Tom Clark was selected by his fellow class- mates to give the Senior Address. His main thoughts were based on the lyrics of the song, Turn, Turn, Turn.” 87 Maria de los Angeles Vargas Jimenez, more com- monly known as Maria Vargas, was our American Field Ser- vice student from Costa Rica. She came to be loved by all stu - dents during her stay in Canby. Her bubbling personality charmed everyone who met her. During her stay here, she gave many talks on her coun- try's customs and showed slides of soccer games and bullfights . Knowing very little English when she first came, Maria learned quickly through the help of her friends and family. We, the Class of '67, salute our foreign friend and wish her the best of everything in the future. Costa Rican Student Joins Class Of ’67 Maria's hosts during her stay in Canby were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kraft, Keith, Lyle, and Kaye. 88 Many juniors began to prepare for the future by taking the PSAT and National Merit Scholarship lest.
