THE LANCER 1963 ---- THAT THE STUDENTS OF CANBY HIGH SCHOOL ARE UNIQUE. Our parents and teachers have helped us to form individual ideas and opinions enabling us to be prepared citizens of both our community and our country. Because of our stu- dents ' abilities in leadership, we have many organizations that we should be proud of. Each cf these organizations plays a part in making our school a center for group participation as well as for the individual student. Through our work on the LANCER, we have come to realize more fully the iirportance of the individuals in our activities and the parts they play in making C.H.S. a leading school of this area. Because of this we have tried to make this LANCER uniquely yours. We hope you enjoy it. The Editors 2 DEDICATION In 1953 Canby High School gained a new member to its faculty. Since then. Judy Nevins, Ruth Vernlund, Marlys Janssen, Mary Pull, Barbara Hagebak, Beverly Pearson, and Sandra Armitage all waited for the big moment. Then it came - Marlys Janssen, 1962 Homecoming Queen! Last year's queen, Gwen Hagebak, crowned Marlys amid a thunderous ovation. Our queen thanked everyone for making this Homecoming possible. Bruce Saum, crown bearer, and Jennifer Olson, flower girl, assisted Gwen in the coronation. Paul Syltie and Jim Jelen were marshals. Paul Gubrud gave an entertaining speech in which he urged everyone to give the team his support. Gary Maas presented Queen Marlys with a bouquet of red roses from the football team. Mike Snortum and Eric Hucke, student chairmen, wound up the coronation ceremony by making the announcements and acknowledgements. At seven o'clock the scene shifted to the bonfire held next to the football field. There the cheerleaders led the students in a rousing pep fest and the co-captains, Gary Maas and Paul Syltie, pledged to win the game. The Royal Court was in attendance and was cheered enthusiastically. The announcement of the winning window displays was made as follows: first prize-senior class, second prize-freshmen, and third prize- eighth graders. The game with the Trojans was the most exciting of the year. Trailing in the fourth quarter, the Lancers came back in a clutch effort to top the day by defeat- ing Ortonville 12 to 7. Half-time entertainment was provided by the marching band. They paid tribute to the graduate classes of 1890, 191k, 1925, and 193k by playing songs from their eras. The Drifters'! played for the Homecoming Dance which followed the game. The gym was beautifully decorated by the sophomores and the dance was a big success. It was undoubtedly one of the best and most exciting homecomings in many years. «a SPEAKER - Paul Gubrud RECESSIONAL Queen Gwen of 1961 Bruce Saum, Queen Marlys, Jennifer Olsen 24 25 Mr. 0. THE REMARKABLE INCIDENT AT CARSON CORNERS by Reginald Rose Faculty Director - Mrs. Breening Student Director - Anna Marie Abel It's early evening at the Carson Corners High School. Some of the students have organized a program which no one seems to know anything about, and as the parents arrive, they whisper among themselves. As the program unfolds, they find that the students have set up a trial to investigate the death of one of their classmates. Bill McGinnis. When the council for the prosecution charges the janitor, Mr. Kovalesky, with murder it causes quite a stir. He claims that Mr. Kovalesky had stolen some Community Fund monev and Bill had seen it in the boiler room. He had then found Bill alone on the fire escape and pushed him to his death. The council for the defense claims it had been an accident, and that Bill leaned against a broken railing, causing him to crash to the ground. She goes on to point out, through flashbacks, that many of the grown-ups there had had a part in Billy's death. Mr. Wright, the president of the chamber of commerce, had said that it would cost far too much to build a new school, yet plans to remake main street were in progress. Mr. Prince, the building inspector, had been in too much of a hurry to climb up to the fire escape, and had OK'd the menace without checking it. Mr. Rogers had lifted and carried Bill after he had fallen. Even Dr. Caldwell had been listening to a ball game, and had failed to come until half an hour after he was called. Mr. Kovalesky's alibi is confirmed when Miss Frank arrives and remembers that she had given him the fund money to keep in a safe place and had forgotten to get it back from him. Mr. McGinnis then recalls that even he had had a part in his son's death. Fourteen years before, he had been working on the fire escape and couldn't find an angle brace. When his wife came, he forgot all about the brace, and left the job unfinished. Mr. McGinnis then pleads with the others to not forget or be too lazy, and begs them to forgive him. SNOW DAYS Snow Days were held at Canby High School on January 18 and 1J This new event was sponsored by the senior class. Snow Days officially opened Friday afternoon at 3:15 with the coronation of our Snow King and Queen. Steve Yackley and Arlene Melrose were the king and queen representing the senior class. Darryl Yackley and Sharon Lage were the prince and princess from the junior class. Richard Reiter and Linda Ruth were the prince and princess from the sophomore class. Friday night the royalty reigned at the victorious basket- ball game between the Canby Lancers and the Appleton Aces. Saturday afternoon the Lancer wrestlers lost a tough match to the Tracy Scrappers. That evening, the senior high boys presented a variety show consisting of several skits, highlighted by an all male chorus lit The Snow Ball was opened with music played by a German band led by Richard Grondahl, but the music for the main part of the dance was furnished by the Drifters. A blizzard, one of the largest in '63, added excitement to an already exciting night, making this event one which was enjoyed by all. 34 )arryl Yackley and Sharon Lage Arlene Melrose and Steven Yackley Linda Ruth and Richard Reiter 35 A BAND Soprano Clarinei Connie Anderson Bb Clarinet «Dena Brubaker Lorene Hons on Doriene Anderson David Hoseck Annis Kay Rogers Nancy Halstenson Pamela Saltee Jeannine Olson Eileen Peterson LoAnn Siverson Kirsten Monson Judy Anderson Barbara Hanson Kathy Bruns Barbara Ohlsen Leon Pederson Carol Christianson Linda Zubke Sharon Remerowski not pictured- Sue Tange Alto Clarinet -«■Donna Evjen Ken Stein Marcus Bruns Bass Clarinets Linda Ruth -«■Nancy Peterson- Carol Sue Strassburg Director - Mr, D. When Don MacDonald moved his family, including two teenage daughters, from the city life of Seattle to the rugged life of a rundown chicken farm in the Olynpic Mountains, certain changes were expected. However, neither his wife Betty nor his daughters, Anne and Joan, were prepared for such inconveniences as skunks, leaky roofs, and a bathroom in the back yard. Delicate Daisy, Mr. Manic Depressive, Fishface, the Lingery Lady, and a few hundred chickens made life interest- ingly unpredictable and funny. With love at first sight, Anne fell for Thad, a local yokel. Thad also fell for her, although a chicken named Primrose and a girl named Corrine almost made eggshells out of the young romance. After ol1 First Born grabbed the only boy available, Joan labeled the whole situation Putrid . Her frustrations were not helped when HiBaby, her first boyfriend, exhibits a one-stomach mind. He was soon replaced by JJ who seemed much more genuine- ly interested—until he came to visit with a math book, and the young romance was rained out. Even a visit by Betty's old friend Millicent and her hiking group, Toni, Paula, Mitzie, Lolly, and Thermometer Tessie, plagued the family because the rain forced them to canp inside the MacDonalds' house. This strained the already weakened relations between Don and his family, and the females threatened to return to Seattle. They never did leave though for all three soon realized that they really did like their new life. County agent Miss Linden, photographer Grady, Counselor Ross, and electrician Larsen each appeared in the final scene with different, longed-for news, including the news that Primrose won the egg-laying contest and the announcement that electric power was on the way. Even with this brighter future, however, it appeared that the chickens would remain the boss. 43 LANCER STAFF L. Monson, Mr. Nelson, J. Nevins C. Peterson, P. Saltee Typing Staff H. Kosmalski, M. The record of two wins and seven losses does not tell the whole story. The boys played well despite serious shortages of manpower and experience. They were also crippled by injuries to key players. Despite these setbacks, the Lancers were a tough team and gave their op- ponents a hard fought game. Seniors: Dick Tibbits, quarterback, Gary Maas, full- back; Steve Yackley, halfback; Jim Syltie, end; Paul Syltie, lineman; and Jim Jelen, back; are all to be commended for their fine performance. The highlight of the season was Canby's victory over Ortonville at Homecoming. The boys were really up for this game and showed that they could put together a good team effort. An extremely rough windup schedule against Tracy, Marshall, and Madison cost us a better record. It must be pointed out that the Lancers failed to score in only one game and totaled 70 points all season conpared to last year's 7• The individual scoring honor goes to Mike Maier, who carried the ball over the goal line six times. Next year's squad shows promise with Fletcher Syltie, Chuck Streff, Mike Maer- tens, Lyle Kraft, Jon Thomsen, Glen Funk, Bob Tibbits, Erroll Harding, and Leslie Ochsendorf vying for varsity positions. VARSITY BASKETBALL Row 2: Featuring a well baanced scoring attack, the Lancers bounced back from two unsuccessful years to post a commendable record of 13 and 5. Our first conference contest saw Canby outman a head strong Granite Falls team and win on Lyles Kraft's last second basket. It was Granites only conference loss. Marshalls always tough squad won both of our encounters with them. After Christmas, the Lancermen settled down to run up a long string of conference wins. Traveling to New Prague in January, we defeated them lj.8-20. Ortonville's Trojans, defeated by us at Homecoming, got revenge by giving us our first conference loss 56-52 at Canby. Then they came back in the last game of the season to down an injury plagued Canby five 57-5U in a heartbreaker. This game would have given us the conference chanpionship. As it was, the Lancers finished second behind Granite Falls, winning 8 and losing 2. Ortonville came in third at 7-3. This year's team was perhaps the youngest and yet, the most evenly balanced squads in quite some tiem. Led by senior guard-forward, Jim Syltie, who was season high scorer with points, the rest of the team was entirely composed of juniors and sophomores. Veteran guard, Lyle Kraft, was right behind Jim with 25l points. Back of him were junior forwards, Dennis Anderson and Darryl Yackley, with 152 and 129 tallies respectively. A newcomer, sophomore, Jerry Livermore, took over the pivot and played like a veteran, scoring 137 for the season. The reserves saw plenty of action, as the starters often built up substantial leads. Seniors, Paul Syltie and Steve Yackley; juniors. Chuck Streff and Roger Koch; and sophomores, Bob Kraft and Richard Reiter, filled in admirably on these occasions. Carl Hartness, senior, played nearly as much as the starters and provided strong relief on the backboards and scored 6U points. Four returning first team lettermen from this year's team will give the Lancers a head start towards an even better record next season. Plenty of help should come from the Bombers who showed much promise in winning most of their games. 53 SENIORS Steve Yackley - BOMBERS L. to R: D. Ohlenkanp, S. Hacker, A. Thovson, D. Schumacher, B. They outscored their opponents by 102 points in those five matches, conpiling 162 points against the opponents' 60. We lost the next two to perennial toughies Tracy and Redwood Falls. These were the only losses except for the loss to Montevideo in the second-to-last match of the season, lost by a final score of 20 - 19. In that thrilling match Butch Ochsendorf lost a 1 - 0 decision in the 175 class and John Nelson drew in the heavyweight class. For the second straight year, Canby won the Little Sioux Conference Chanpionship, when they notched a close 23 - 21 victory over Ortonville and followed with a 28 - 20 triuirph over Appleton, They were undefeated in conference play, with 6 wins and no losses. In the district, the Lancers matched Tracy, with each sending five to the region. This is particularly gratifying, because Tracy had three state tourney grapplers returning from last year, and because Canby has never beaten Tracy in a dual meet. Of the five who won in district, Leon Gust, LeRoy Jelen, Leslie Ochsendorf, Richard Kanniainen, and Mike Full, only Rich finished the season undefeated. Dan Gust also had a highly successful year. Because of injuries, LeRoy Jelen was unable to conpete in the regional contest, but of the four wrestlers competing in the regional contest,we sent three to state conpetition. They were Richard Kanniainen, Leslie Ochsendorf, and Leon Gust. Only four seniors were on the tournament A squad, so we are looking forward to a promising year next year.
