THE LANCER 1956 Published By Canby Public School Canby, Minnesota We have Known you for 8 years and do especially appreciate your interest in us and our welfare; your desire for the expansion and promotion of our school; your determination to provide us with a good educa- tional background. Perhaps more than all, we appreciate your sense of humor. We will never forget your version of The Night Before Christmas ; that always seemed a fitting start for our two weeks holiday. To you, Mr. C. P. Mickelson, we, the students of Canby High School, dedicate our 19?6 Lancer! 2 FACULTY and CLASSES The Lancer Staff would like to pay a tribute to the growth of one phase of our vocational program---the shop department. When Arnold Killen joined the Canby faculty in 193ft , the shop program was limited indeed. During all these years, Mr. Killen has struggled along in the basement of the grade building in somewhat crowded quarters, has added equipment, and has made the depart- ment an important part of boys' education in Canby . By 1951, the department was expanded to include the metal shop and a metal shop teacher was added. Today Don Straw holds that position. In 1953, an agriculture uapartment was added with Dewaine Englund as instructor. 1955-'56 sees another part of Hr. Mickelson's building and expansion program realized—the new shop and vocational ag building. This has long been one of Mr. Killen's pet dreams. And so. to this department, we say a special Hats ____________off to vou. ____________________________________________ Administration Clarence D. By Thursday afternoon the usual Homecoming spirit have overtaken old C. H. S. As usual the sun was behind the clouds and it was getting colder by degrees. However, a very fes- tive spirit was evidence in the students as they joined in the yells led by the Bomber cheerleaders. Pep talks were given by two senior members of the team, Harvey Christianson, and Russel Emmons, for whom this Homecoming is the last. Friday morning, as we all tumbled out of bed after having worked on our floats until the wee hours of the morning, we discovered that although '.he day was very chilly, the seniors ’56 had finally succeeded in anchoring the sun high in the sky. To the strains Huldigungsmarsch being played by the Canby High Band, Queen Bosalyn Eischens attended by Elizabeth Bockes, Marjean Ekern, Sandra Reynolds, Phyllis Christianson Joyce Mickelson, and Sonja Thorpe came in to take their respective places on and around the throne. They were escorted up the steps by Harvey Christianson and Leonard Jenssen. We were told by Mayor Aasen not only to fight to win the game but also to have good sportsman- ship and school spirit. Micheal Rosten presented the crown to Patty Craigmile,'5U Homecom- ing Queen, who crowned Queen Rosalyn. Carol Christianson presented the Queen with a bouquet of red roses. The student body rose and sang Hail to the Queen after which everyone pre- sent left to attend the parade. There were many people gathered on Main Street to watch the many clever and beautiful floats. The parade was led by the color guard and the band. Although it was very cold that evening a large crowd braved the weather to see the ex- citing football game between the Canby Lancers and the Appleton Aces. The game ended with a final score of 20-6 in favor of Canby. During the hald the Canby High School Band under the direction of Mr. Anderson presented different maneuvers, finally forming a guard of honor through which the prizewinning floats were drawn. Queen Rosalyn and her attendents were seated on the first float-a creation in white trimmed with red roses. The freshman class won first prize with a theme of Outplay Appleton. Second prize went to class of 60 with the theme Anchor Appleton. The seniors with Tohight Will Tell and the class of '61 with Skunk the Aces tied for third. After the game many teenagers attended the Homecoming Dance which was sponcered by the Student Council. The dance was held in the old gymnasium. A murder occurs next.door when their neighbor Mrs. Sanford is killed and a young police Lieu- tenent appears on the scene. The three kids try to inviegle their mother, Marion Carstairs into solving the murder. When she refuses, they decide to do it for her. Poor Archie seems to be left out because he's just a 'ninfant' and protests with a series of 'oh boney, oh foo's,' He does come in handy tho, when the actual case is being solved. In the end Mr. Cherington, 'the cookie lady's' husband is revealed by April as the murderer! A wrong laugh ends Mr. Cherington as Archie tackles him and Bill Smith and Sergeant Swendson take him away. This shows that Crime Does Not Pay. With the worry of the murder off their minds, April, Dinah, and Archie ask Bill if he'd like to marry Marion and visa versa. The play ends on a happy note with Archie's final words. Granite scored first in the secnnd half when Bob Peterson scored after Jim Erie caught a long pass deep in Canby ter- ritory. Canby s scores were by Grengs on a 3h yard run and Russ Emmons for one yard; Stan Lyslo scored the 3rd TD and Jerry Halstenson scored on an 80 yard pass interception. Harv Christensen made 3 points after touchdowns. The Clarkfield Cardinals were too much for the Lancers. They went down 32-0, with too much fumbling playing a large part in the defeat. Chris Hauge was the main reason for de- feat. He ripped off long gains all through the game. Cletus Lanners was their star as a defensive guard. He nailed many Canby backs before they even got started. The Lancers downed the Dawson Blackjacks 19-7. They completely dominated the game in the first half scoring tow TDs; onjy Jim Dunphy on a two yard quarterback sneek and a pass to Harv Christensen from 11 yards out. The kiik failed and Canby led 13-0 at the half. Dawson's Bill Pearson scored on a 20 yard run in the 3rd period.. The fiaal score was by Dunphy who took a defleated Dawson punt and ran it back form the Blackjack's 20. Canby easily defeated Ortonville 39-7, with Dick Blankenfeld completing 9 out of 9. Harv Christensen did a nice job of grabbing all the passes that came to him. Russ Emmons made a few nice gallops to pay dirt as did Dave Grengs on a 60 yard off tackle play. Orton- villes only score was a 1 0 yard pass that tied the 7-7. The Lancers finished the festive Homecoming day celebration by downing Appelton, 20-6 Borchard scored first on an 18 yard sprint. The kick was good. At the beginning of the second half the Aces moved the ball from their own 33 to Canby's 9 only to fumble, Russ Emmons scored the 2nd T.D. on a 30 yard romp. A little later Bertmess scores on a pass. The final score was by Blankenfeld on a 5 yard quarterback sneek. After Canby sootted Pipestone 2 touchdowns, they played on even terms the rest of the game. Orneson and Johnson were the Arrow's big guns. Canby's only score was by Dick Blan- kenfeld after a restrained drive with Emmons, Borchard, and Dick. The game ended with Cany on Pipestones 2 yard line. The Madison Dragons spoiled the Lancer's hopes for Little Sioux Conference Champion - ship by a score of 20-0. Milt Bothum scored the Dragon's first T.D. and point after touch- down after a 53 yard drive. He also scored the 2nd T.D. Nyhus scored the final touchdown in the final quarter. Jr. Arndt turned in a good game at full back. John Otto and Howard Brown did a fine job at the ends. 49 ■ i Is It? ■■—or isn't it? It Was} ...
