His efforts to secure five dollars for the spring dance caused plenty of trouble J A cranky father and Hugo Jarvis, who tried to steal his girl, Ginny, didn't make Chuck's efforts and easier. Dr. Allenby missed an appointment to see the Allenby farm be- cause Chuck had taken the car. Chuck was punished by having his allowance taken from him. A few weeks later the farm land became valuable and Dr. Allen- by was rich. Chuck was praised and received money for the danoe and won Gin- ny back. George Bennet, friend of Chuck's finally persuaded Chuck's sis- ter Barbie, to go to the dance with him. Hugo Jarvis took Barbie's friend Nancy Pomeray. Hannah Hawks, the hired girl from the ccuntry, decided not to marry any of her pen pals but remained with the Allenby family. Tn the first game, Canby defeated Balaton 69 to 35. The second game found Canby out in front of Cottonwood by a score of 60 to 33. The Lancers were hard pressed in their semi-final game by Ivanhoe, which used very slow tactics and controlled the ball for the first quarter making the score at the end of the first period 0 to 0. The Lancers led by 11 to 9 at the half, then pulled away for a 40 to 26 win and the gleam of district honors in their eyes. Canby 56 Marshall 46 The Lancers started fast and led by 22 to 8 before Marshall knew what hit them. Marshalls Tigers came back but not enough as the determined Lancers led by Smiths 19 points and Bones floor play would not be beaten. The Canby championship team was honored with three men on the all-distriot team— Err, Ronnie, and Bones. REGION 3 TOURNAMENT For the first time in the history of the school, Canby came through the Regional Tournament at St. Peter with the title and the ohance to play in the state tourney. Canby 42 Hutchinson 38 The Lancers were a little nervous to start the game but after a bad first half, pulled away to defeat Hutch 42-38. Canby 34 Appleton 23 The Lancers jumped to an early lead and led 19 to 8 at the half. In the third quarter Appleton made a bid for victory but the Lancers showed their dribbling «id expert ball handling to win 34 to 23. In any write-up of the Regional, mention must be made of the fine quality of clay turned in by Mike Dunphy—his ball stealing and guarding were the subject of much conversation among the spectators. STATE TOURNAMENT Canby 42 Mankato 32 Canby a young Lancers won the first game of the State Tournament from Mankato 42 to 32 with Smiths' 15 points leading the way to viotory. Canby 25 Duluth Central 38 Except for an exceptionally oold shooting night on which they hit only 12 of their shots, the Lanoers could have defeated the State Championship team from Duluth. Canby out-rebounded the Trojans, and with Erv holding their All-State center to 10 points, were in the game until the end. Canby 34 Rochester 37 Tired and weary from 3 days in the oities, the Lancers fell before the Rochester Rockets 37 to 34. With only 2 minutes to go, Canby tied up the game at 34-34, but lost the third plaoe standing to a scrappy team that refused to give up. Comments on the state tournament heard by an outsider! Canby had the best balance of any team there———the Canby iron men were not dependent upon one man, but played team ball———the class of ball handling, the deceptive plays under the basket, the passing, and team spirit are marks of a 'good outfit'—Cole's rebound play was well worth a congratulation, too.
