W7 T Q? - V We, the Senior class of '57 en- tered Canby High as mighty freshman, or so we thought. Our spirits dropped a little during initiation but soared again after the ordeal. Margrethe Gregersen, Wayne Rigsby, and Alan Brac- kett won prizes for their initia- tion costumes. Our president, Jerry Poole, moved shortly after election so Larry Peters, assisted by Luana Knox and Zoe Knapp, guided our class. We surprised everyone by taking first place in the Curtis Drive and our one-act play, Dates Incorporated, took ,31- IORS L. Peters, Pres., E. Zachow, Vice Pres., Z. Knapp Sec., P. Blum, Treas., P. Karen Westerlund and Mary Fawver received an outstanding Freshman girl co-award. Luana Knox, escorted by Paul Pellatz, and Susan Iverson, escorted by Don Campbell, represented us on the May Court. During our Sophomore year our one-act play, A Young Man's Fancy, placed second and Alan Brackett was named best actor. Leading this year's class were Karen Wes- terlund, Don Campbell, Luana Knox, and Zoe Knapp. The highlight of the year, of course, was our biology trip to the coast. Patricia Baker, escorted by Karl Herkamp, and Barbara Thackery, escorted by Eldon Zachow were our May Court Princesses. Junior class officers were Larry Peters, Jim Cannell, Pat Baker, and Harry Riehle. Our main activities were our one-act play, A Night in the Country, our class play, Dear Ruth, and the J unior-Senior Prom. Bonnie Hulbert and Penny Workman, es- corted by Jerry Kyllo and Larry Peters, were our princesses on the May Court. We started out our Senior year by placing first in the March of Dimes drive. Larry Peters, Eldon Zachow, Zoe Knapp, and Pat Blum guided us through our last year. Our class play, The Curious Savage, and our one-act play, The Nautical Approach, proved to be quite successful. We were very fortunate to have as an exchange student, Elie Sakellaropoulos from Greece. Patricia Baker, escorted by Adin Hester, reigned as our May Court Queen and Marilyn Harms, escorted by Don Campbell, was our Crown Princess. Princesses were Karen Westerlund, escorted by Karl Herkamp, and Luana Knox, escorted by Paul Crawford. Graduation remained the foremost thought in our minds as we prepared to leave the halls of Canby High. Bob Anders Favorite Activity: Dancing Favorite Subject: Physics Last Words: See you tomorrow! Jirn and Elie Our Exchange Student This year Canby High School was privileged to play host to Elie Sakel- laropoulos, our foreign exchange stu- dent from Patras, Greece. Elie is sev- enteen years old and is living with Jim Marvin's family while attending our school. In Greece, Elie has a thirteen year old sister named Alexandra. When asked what he likes most about America, Elie replied, The social life of the teenagers. He is also a very good artist and delights students and friends with his fine art work. His hobby, however. is studying about for- eign countries. Elie has made many friends in our school and community and he will be greatly missed when he returns to Greece. I Election Tirne UW Each of the one hundred and nine Jun- iors has helped to make their class a suc- cessful one. They placed first in the Curtis Magazine Drive for the third con- secutive year and placed second in the March of Dimes inter-class rivalry. One of the c1ass's main projects for the year was the organization of a small scale election of national officials for the mem- bers of our school. They also gave elec- tion speeches for the various candidates. They sponsored the traditional Junior- Senior Prom, which is one of the big events of our school year. The Juniors seem to be anxiously look- ing forward to their Senior year. B. Kyllo, Pres., J. Rover, Vice Pres., M. Barnes, Sec., S. Cannell, Treas., B. Berg, L. The Sophomores finally had a long awaited chance to conduct the initiation for the incoming Freshmen students. Then they sponsored a Hello dance which was given as a special welcome for Freshmen to our high school. This energetic class placed second in the Curtis Magazine Drive. They also sponsored a dance to raise money for the March of Dimes. The most memorable activity of the sophomore year was the biology trip to the coast on which Sophomores had a chance to put their knowledge of sea life to use in identifying sea plants and animals. .if HAQLTEX- ' L K. RE HW This year's Rooks began the year by discovering that the dreaded initiation day is a lot of fun. Members of the class dressed up as comic strip characters and gave students a good chance to see their clever costumes as they paraded across the stage at the end of the day. The Freshmen also enjoyed the Hello dance which gave them a chance to become better acquainted with the rest of the student body. James Martin was their candidate for Mr. Santa Claus of the Christmas Ball and they worked hard to earn votes for him by bringing Christmas toys for un- fortunate children to school. As a result Jim was named Mr. Santa Claus much to the delight of his classmates. The Freshmen also carried on several other projects during the year. They have made themselves at home at Canby High and are eagerly awaiting three more years of high school life. Senior Class Play The Curious Savage' ' Hidden bonds, a teddy bear with one eye, and a leading lady with blue hair, all added up to make this year's senior class play an entertaining comedy. Mrs. Savage, a wealthy widow was sent to a mental institution by her foster chil- dren so they could gain control of her money. Mrs. Savage hid her money, but finally agreed to give it to her foster children. However, with the help of the other patients and the nurse, Mrs. Savage was able to keep her fortune and was declared sane. Mill Ann Morton Scared, Kay? Director J. Marvin, Samuel, K. After gathering information the story must be ap- proved by the advisor, then typed and counted off into 22-space lines. After proof-reading, the layout is made by the editor and managing-editor. Football This year's Cougar team, with only three lettermen returning from last year, lost all of its games but showed the drive and determination of a top notch ball club. Under their new coach, Primo Brusco, the team showed steady improvement throughout the season. Among the eight senior lettermen the squad will lose this year are: Fred Utter, Cap- tain, Karl Herkamp, Doug Lehr, Paul Crawford, Eldon Zachow, Bob Silvernale and Larry Peters. The outlook is much brighter for next year, however, with sixteen lettermen return- ing to the squad. Mr. Brusco Fred Utter Cgach Captain In Action 'Dunk Zoch Utter Campbell Ray Herkamp Mik9, Delrnar Basketball Basketball lettermen this year were: H. Anderson, B. Martin, and E. Zachow, seniorsg C. Darling, and D. Darling, juniorsg and D. Inlow, sophomore. Although the season was poor for the Cougars this year, the team had its good points too. Because of his excellent form Captain E1- don Zachow was placed on the Wil- lamette Valley League all star second team.
