X A. KI. of this city, presented to thg Canby Union High School the Shrine of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. This shrine is a phostatic reproduction of the original documents, and is one of the most coveted of gifts, ever to be accepted by the school. It stands on a pedestal about six feet in height, and has three large sheets, each hinged, framed, and covered with glass. ln addition to the copies of the legal documents the pictures of all the signers of the Declaration of Independence but two are shown. An historic sketch of the lodge itself tells us that the Champoeg Lodge received its first charter on October 31, 1860, when the lodge was opened by the NI. XV. Ci. XI. Amory Holbrook. The old town of Champoeg, from which this Klasonic lodge derives its name, was quite prominent in the early history of this country, because it was there that it was decided to place the Oregon territory under the jurisdiction of the lfnited States, rather than under the control of Great Britain. During ensuing years. the lodge was housed in various places, until finally, on February S, lfllfl. it was voted to con- solidate Champoeg Lodge No. 27 of Aurora with Canby Lodge No. ld-l. The historic name of Cham' poeg Lodge was retained. At a formal assembly on April 20 in the school auditorium, the shrine was presented by -I. l.ee lfclaere son. P. KI., and accepted, on behalf of the student body, by the student body president. Kenneth 'forge- son. The assembly was brought to a close with a short address, Mllhe Constitution, given by Ralph C. Zimmerson. It has been said that every citizen. man. woman, and child, should be familiar with these two 1l0ClllNC'Nf5- H1111 the I5l'f'5'i'Uf3fl0U of TNS ShI'ilW T0 The school will do much to bring about the realization of this ideal, It will be a constant reminder of the d0QL11Uf'l1t5 which insure to the people ot the lfnited States life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and the right to democratic selt-government. Both the I7Y'9'5f'm mid the future students of Qlilllli-Q' lvnion High School will value this shrine as the perpetuation of these rights. 3
