At the first of the year members of the staff were given positions near extinguishers and doors and throughout the year have been at these stations during fire drills. It is their duty to be prepared to be at these stations if ever any emergencies should arise. fniagfi We '7ake in Um Beaulziful Sam! Q Canby lfnion High School is lcnown throughout the state for its beautifully landscaped school grounds. Not only to the students of Canby Lvnion High School are the well-kept grounds a source of pride, but also the members of the community. The taxpayers may well feel that they have received a satisfactory remuneration in an institution of learning which has received the recognition that we have received during the past few years. 8. Students at Canby Lfnion High School have set a high standard in general conduct throughout the past year. It was felt that a better system of regulating the conduct in the halls could be achieved by placing it into the bands of the students themselves. livery Senior class member served on Hall Duty, and by reporting any misconduct directly to the office, they helped to improve the courtesy in the halls. 81644 lfach year the graduating classes have presented the school with a useful and attractive gift. Klany of these gifts are everyday aids to the students who should associate each class with the token of service that it left behind for us to remember them by. In lflil the graduating class left the school the drink- illg fountain in f1'ont of the school. The Class of lfldl left us the clock in the auditorium, and the Class of V333 left us the bench and the weeping willow tree south of the school building. ln W3-l the Senior class presented the school with the bird bath. The Class of V935 bestowed upon the school ornaments for the auditorium: the Class of 1036, the curbing around the drive. A fountain, trees, and a bench near the tennis courts were given to the school hy the Class of lfljf, This yearls class, 1938, leaves to the school a clock which now bangs in the center hall. 26

Iivimms. r'1,nm-rly, The Band has improved, both in quality and quantity this year due to the addition of several new instruments and to the Cooperation of the band members themselves. lfarly in tht- year this group set as its goal the addition of new caps and drum majors' outfits to complete the uniforms started last year. To this end it sponsored a show and presented a very enjoyable concert. The goal was only partially reached with the addition of the drum majors' outfits which are being worn by fllarilyn Jeanne Schutz, Barbara Pitts, and lfunice Steffenson. The Hand participated in the State lland Contest at Corvallis on April 9 in Class ll. On llay 7 it represented the school at the Orchestra Festival at llilwaukie. As a belated feature of Klusic XVeelc, the Band presented a joint concert with the orchestra and vocal department on Klay 9. 0 A group which is entirely new this year is the High SCh00l Orchestra. This group was organized by fllr. Wleathers to meet the great need for some opportunity for those who play orchestral instru- ments to perform as an orchestra. This was made possible through the cooperation of the faculty in permitting orchestra members to be excused from classes one period a week on a rotation basis. In spite of hampering conditions the group made several creditable performances at plays. programs and on other occasions. lt also participated in the Band and Urchestra Festival held at Klilwaukie on Hay 9. It is hoped that next year this will become a permanent instrumental organization. 25

May ma, All Hail, Queen l,orean Il A lovely brunette. l,orean Oney, was chosen to reign over Canby Linion High School's annual llay Day lfestivities on llay 6. In attendance at tht- Coronation ceremony were: Frances Groh and Fsther Carlson of the Senior Class, Klarilyn -leanne Schutl of the ,lunior Class. Doris Trachsel of the Soph- omore Class, and lfrancys Perkett of the Freslnnall Class. During the festivities the queen and her court made a charming picture of royalty in their long dresses of pastel shades. The queen and her attendants were chosen by popular vote of the Student Body. This method proved to be a great improvement over tht- methods used previously. The Senior class chose five girls, and the queen and two attendants were chosen from this number by the entire Student Body. The three other classes each elected three candidates, and the Student Body chose one from each of the three classes. 'lihe theme of the fete was the greeting and the entertaining of the queen and her court presented by her loyal subjects who were the girls of the physical education department. Bliss Patterson was in charge of the peasant dances and the Klay pole winding which were enjoyed by the queen, her court, and the many visitors. lfighth grade students, who will be freshmen next year, of the surrounding districts were guests for the day. llany events were planned to make the day pleasant for them in every way. After the crown- ing of the queen and the presentation of the festivities, rhf- eighth graders participated in a track meet. The grade school gave a song festival in the afternoon. A baseball game completed the day's program. 'lihe lioy's Booster Club again sponsored filay Day. This organization has each year presented our Lihlay Day Festival and it is through their efforts that the event was a success again this year. ,-
