X A. KI. of this city, presented to thg Canby Union High School the Shrine of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. This shrine is a phostatic reproduction of the original documents, and is one of the most coveted of gifts, ever to be accepted by the school. It stands on a pedestal about six feet in height, and has three large sheets, each hinged, framed, and covered with glass. ln addition to the copies of the legal documents the pictures of all the signers of the Declaration of Independence but two are shown. An historic sketch of the lodge itself tells us that the Champoeg Lodge received its first charter on October 31, 1860, when the lodge was opened by the NI. XV. Ci. XI. Amory Holbrook. The old town of Champoeg, from which this Klasonic lodge derives its name, was quite prominent in the early history of this country, because it was there that it was decided to place the Oregon territory under the jurisdiction of the lfnited States, rather than under the control of Great Britain. During ensuing years. the lodge was housed in various places, until finally, on February S, lfllfl. it was voted to con- solidate Champoeg Lodge No. 27 of Aurora with Canby Lodge No. ld-l. The historic name of Cham' poeg Lodge was retained. At a formal assembly on April 20 in the school auditorium, the shrine was presented by -I. l.ee lfclaere son. P. KI., and accepted, on behalf of the student body, by the student body president. Kenneth 'forge- son. The assembly was brought to a close with a short address, Mllhe Constitution, given by Ralph C. Zimmerson. It has been said that every citizen. man. woman, and child, should be familiar with these two 1l0ClllNC'Nf5- H1111 the I5l'f'5'i'Uf3fl0U of TNS ShI'ilW T0 The school will do much to bring about the realization of this ideal, It will be a constant reminder of the d0QL11Uf'l1t5 which insure to the people ot the lfnited States life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and the right to democratic selt-government. Both the I7Y'9'5f'm mid the future students of Qlilllli-Q' lvnion High School will value this shrine as the perpetuation of these rights. 3 amy., I'Il'GIiNIi 511.145, Pl'iIll'If7ll! In the past the Girls' League has always had an extensive social program, and this year has been no exception. A 'liransfer Luncheon for those girls who had come to Canby from other schools was given. A beautiful candle-light vesper service was held at the l,utheran church in Canby. Other social events were the spring dance at which our schools dance orchestra made its debut, and the annual flIother's Day Tea. The Girls' League also cooperated with other organizations to make the carni- val a success. New officers for the coming year were elected in April and installed later. 'liwelve Senior girls and twelve Junior girls have been members of this pep organization for this past year. They attended all the athletic games, either at school or away, as were possible. Through their cheering the girls sought to keep the team's morale up if they were losing or to praise them in their victory. For the second year Canby has won thc football at the Football .lambouree for having the best cheering section. lluch credit should go to these twenty-four girls who did a great deal to organize the pep of the Student Body. The Cougar staff began to formulate plans for the H1938 Cougar early last fall under the super- vision of Klr. Vlleathers. The assistant editor and manager were chosen from the .lunior class in order that experienced students will be in charge of the annual for the next year. The work of Al- fred Riggins was what the staff sought in the way of originality. Cougars were sold on an inter-class rivalry basis. Seniors were eager to make this annual available and won the contest. Sales were boosted to 192 copies, which is a record for Canby Linion High School. The staff wishes to thank those who worked with them and helped make this edition of the Cougar , possible. The lfcho staff was the most diligent of all the organizations taking an active part in school life. 'l'wo weeks after school had begun the first issue of the lfcho was published. heralding the progress that was to be made during the rest of the year. In the previous years the Ifcho was mimeographed at school, and this year a great improvement was made when the lfcho was printed for the first time in the history of Canby Union High School. The lfcho staff has supported school activities and has been a helpful organization in many ways. Because of its efficiency, the staff experienced a very successful year writing items of interest to the students. Through the cooperation of the local merchants and business men the printed paper was made possible and it became entirely self-supporting. A .liawlt Row: liiuo-j. To this end it sponsored a show and presented a very enjoyable concert. The goal was only partially reached with the addition of the drum majors' outfits which are being worn by fllarilyn Jeanne Schutz, Barbara Pitts, and lfunice Steffenson. The Hand participated in the State lland Contest at Corvallis on April 9 in Class ll. On llay 7 it represented the school at the Orchestra Festival at llilwaukie. As a belated feature of Klusic XVeelc, the Band presented a joint concert with the orchestra and vocal department on Klay 9. 0 A group which is entirely new this year is the High SCh00l Orchestra. This group was organized by fllr. Wleathers to meet the great need for some opportunity for those who play orchestral instru- ments to perform as an orchestra. This was made possible through the cooperation of the faculty in permitting orchestra members to be excused from classes one period a week on a rotation basis. In spite of hampering conditions the group made several creditable performances at plays. programs and on other occasions. lt also participated in the Band and Urchestra Festival held at Klilwaukie on Hay 9. It is hoped that next year this will become a permanent instrumental organization. 25 me no-' Richard Melum .,,,,.,.,,.. Fin' Cliff! 2-ur Iiaek lloxv: I'arnu-nter, li. Ritter, Millar. S. Ritter. Q Canby lfnion High School is lcnown throughout the state for its beautifully landscaped school grounds. Not only to the students of Canby Lvnion High School are the well-kept grounds a source of pride, but also the members of the community. The taxpayers may well feel that they have received a satisfactory remuneration in an institution of learning which has received the recognition that we have received during the past few years. 8. Students at Canby Lfnion High School have set a high standard in general conduct throughout the past year. It was felt that a better system of regulating the conduct in the halls could be achieved by placing it into the bands of the students themselves. livery Senior class member served on Hall Duty, and by reporting any misconduct directly to the office, they helped to improve the courtesy in the halls. 81644 lfach year the graduating classes have presented the school with a useful and attractive gift. Klany of these gifts are everyday aids to the students who should associate each class with the token of service that it left behind for us to remember them by. In lflil the graduating class left the school the drink- illg fountain in f1'ont of the school. The Class of lfldl left us the clock in the auditorium, and the Class of V333 left us the bench and the weeping willow tree south of the school building. ln W3-l the Senior class presented the school with the bird bath. The Class of V935 bestowed upon the school ornaments for the auditorium: the Class of 1036, the curbing around the drive. A fountain, trees, and a bench near the tennis courts were given to the school hy the Class of lfljf, This yearls class, 1938, leaves to the school a clock which now bangs in the center hall. 26 L6 rv, i away wt D ,n r 1 . - -fv, -W J A .tax .. May ma, All Hail, Queen l,orean Il A lovely brunette. l,orean Oney, was chosen to reign over Canby Linion High School's annual llay Day lfestivities on llay 6. In attendance at tht- Coronation ceremony were: Frances Groh and Fsther Carlson of the Senior Class, Klarilyn -leanne Schutl of the ,lunior Class. Doris Trachsel of the Soph- omore Class, and lfrancys Perkett of the Freslnnall Class. During the festivities the queen and her court made a charming picture of royalty in their long dresses of pastel shades. The queen and her attendants were chosen by popular vote of the Student Body. This method proved to be a great improvement over tht- methods used previously. The Senior class chose five girls, and the queen and two attendants were chosen from this number by the entire Student Body. The three other classes each elected three candidates, and the Student Body chose one from each of the three classes. 'lihe theme of the fete was the greeting and the entertaining of the queen and her court presented by her loyal subjects who were the girls of the physical education department. Bliss Patterson was in charge of the peasant dances and the Klay pole winding which were enjoyed by the queen, her court, and the many visitors. lfighth grade students, who will be freshmen next year, of the surrounding districts were guests for the day. llany events were planned to make the day pleasant for them in every way. After the crown- ing of the queen and the presentation of the festivities, rhf- eighth graders participated in a track meet. The grade school gave a song festival in the afternoon. A baseball game completed the day's program. 'lihe lioy's Booster Club again sponsored filay Day. This organization has each year presented our Lihlay Day Festival and it is through their efforts that the event was a success again this year. ,- 29222212221 322212, ll 1 1 1 111118 11 0 11 ll 1 1 N ll 1 3111111 Ol 1 1 Ill 1x11 11111 Ll 1 11 11 1 01111 111611 gllll 1 110t011x 101111-111 11 ls pr1N11111-11 Ill thi exe-ning O11 D111111 1 lll 1 1 11111110011 011 1 111111 1011 1111 11-1111-s 11111 11111110115 Ill 111111 1pp 1 sc 11 1 111 1111 1110111-1 N 11 1 gr It 11111 1111 011 111 11111 T01 1 1 1 101 11-11 110111 011 1113111 1 111 1 111111 111111111 he 111' ix 111111s 01 111 1 1111 611111-11 01ff1s011 11111 1111 1 111111 1 111111s 1 A111111 Riggms IN 1110 110 1111 1 111g 1 1XIl S111 1 1511 1 111-11 1111- 10111111111 1011 111 111e111be1s 01 1111 1111 11111 111111 11111111-1 1111 1'111e SOL 1111111-1 1' 1011 011111 11- 11111 N011 Xl 1 111111-111 1 1 51101117 -Xgnu lxraft 6 21 ZH S 1111 11111 111111815 111 Samoa Glafu 11111 1 N tN 1 ff p KN 11 111 SCITIOI 1l1ss 011 11111111 75 b1 1 11511 111111 1 111 70 1111 111 11 11111 0 1111 p IX 11111 11111111-1111 11111111-111 110111 1111111 1 1111 1111 111 1111 p 1 -Xl111011gl1 1 1011161152 11111111 01 1111 1111011 ILNC'IIl15llCl 11111 01 1 1111 stem 1 1 f 1 1 lt t e lLtl0ll 01 t 1 p IX X1 '1s 111110 1111 11111111 1 1 fI0ll 1 1111 1111111111 N 01 1 ffirs llll 111 11111 e 011111 111111 1111 OIIIS 1111 Cl x111 111 1111 11011111 11110 11111 11111111 1111111111 10 11111 011101 t111011gh 111111 1111111111 11111-1111 111 1111 11111116 01 111 111111 1x'111 N 11101111-1 11110 111 111 11011 1' C thus III 1111 11 1 X110 ,111 817111111141 p1110111111111w 11111 1 101 1 Xfltlkl Hob Q0l1111 1111111 Crm 1JOY0t1lX 11111111 1111 111011 1361111119 1111111 Arluie 111111111111 H1-rbc-11 lilgej 11111 Hall Alfred 1x1111 Dorothl 1 1rs011 Ilfll XXC1Sl1l1l, 11111 V1 2111111 1111121101 auuaaelafu qprlug 111111 111 1111101 class pl 1y 11111 131 p1Csc11t111 011 1111111 N111 11 CISIIIIQ' '1s11l1 '111 s11p11st1t1011s 1711111111110 10 1116 111113 '111 s 131111501 11112 111111101 11111 thi 1111111bc1s 01 1111 11st prullct 111 If tl11Q c011111l1 11111 bi 1 1'011s111g N11111sx 1 1Ct1011 11111 pl111 lf 1' puig Cl s 13011111111 11011113 III 1110011111 1 LU 1-ge 1 11 1111- 1111-1111x111 11111 hu riggul up 111 100111 strx S 1 1 ubs 101 11111111 1111 1111 11111 0111 1 1111111111 11 IIC 10111 1 IN IO 01111 0 111 01 1 IN 1 11 lst f1,, 1 1 1 0111 0 111 111 1111011s 0 111 10 11 1 11111 11 1 1 11101111 11110 Lf 111 10 pow 101 0111 01 llw 111111111 111w1 1 1 1 1110 1 1 S 1111 g 10 11111511 1 10010511 p1p11 11111111 IIHLINI be lll 11111 11111110011 111 11s1 01 Ill 111' 1111 1111-11 1111 10 111'1 13 11111 0111 01 1111 most 111111111111 101111-1111s p1cs1111ed at 1111 111111 1111011 lf 1100 1011 Ill 1 1 1111 1 111111 13111111 11101511 1g11fOI1 xxllllllll O 011 11111 lLlx 1311111111 136111111 H111 10111 XI1s111 R0111111 111111111 Lorr11111 1101161111111 110101111 '1111 111' 1111111 1111111111g 41111113 AIlL1lCXKS 'llld rlcd P11111 28 l:I'UI 1111' 1112111' XYUllll-170 'l1l1'Sl '2 5 '11 11'i'l 0 1 101' 1111' 121'15 '1 111' 1' 11' 1 11 ly 11213 2 -. First lion: Fi-:Illia-rs, Hroli, Klinigvr, Hunt, Snyder. The Canby Hoopsters, though they did not receive the crown for the season, were noted for their good sportsmanship and excellent playing. Lyle Klinger, high point man for Canby, was among the top scoring men of the XVillamette Valley League. The most memorable game of the league season was the first one, played with VVest Linn, on the home floor. The Cougars won this hard-fought battle. At the league tournament in Oregon City, Canby turned back VVest Linn by a narrow margin, and were in turn defeated by Sandy the next evening. At the end of the season Coach Elliot awarded letters to the following: Captain Lyle lilinger, Rich- ard llelum, lid Rackleff, Roger Feathers, Robert Ciroh, Kent Klarkee, Keith Klarkee, Gilbert Hunt, Carl Snyder, and Gale Quinn. VVrestling was adopted as a school sport at the beginning of the year, and has since then become a very enterprising activity. The C. LI H. S. grapplers completed a successful season, having entered and won many meets. The Cougars entered in nine single meets, one dual meet. and three tournaments. They secured second place in the XVillamette Valley League meet. The boys won several championship titles: Edi- son lliles was proclaimed State, Big Nine, and iVillamette Valley champion in the 155-lb. class, Klerle Trachsel, Big Nine champion in 128-lb. class: .lack Burden, Big Nine champion in 115-lb class. Don- ald Kraft won the XVillamette Valley title of the 95-lb. class in the only meet he entered. Coach lflliot awarded letters to ten boys for their efforts in the 1938. season. They were: Captain. Kenneth Hoffman, jack Burden, Ifdison Miles, Ed Rackleff, Harold Schweitzer, Rex Schultz. llerle Trachsel, YVayne Trachsel, Ned YVells, and Sammy iVilson. Hack Row: Daniel, 'I'raehsel, Libby. The six lettermen returning were Captain Parmenter, lfndg Lyle Klinger, Endg Shirley Ritter, Tackleg Ned XVells, Cluardg llob Colvin, Halfbaelcg and Herbert lligej, Halfbaelc. Although the team won only one league game, the boys never demonstrated a lack of the fighting spirit of the Cougars. The greatest victory for the Canby eleven was the 25-0 defeat of their traditional rivals, the llolalla Indians. Another memorable game was the one played at Newberg, where the field was so muddy that the players did not know whether they had their hands on the ball or not. Newberg emerged the victor in this mucky contest with a seore of 2 over Canby's score of 0. The Cougar mentor, lfridley, and his assistant, lfliott, had a successful season in the respect that much progress was shown, and at the end of the season the group gave promise of a bang-up team for next year. The li-squad was probably more successful than the first team in that they won a few more games from the opponents than the first string players. In the addition to the returning lettermen the following boys were awarded letters by Coach Frid- ley at the end of the season: Ray Bany. Tackleg Joe Fisher, lfullbaelcg Loyd Bellamy, Quarterbaclcg .lack Brewer, lfndg Harold Schweitzer, Cluardg Richard Klelum, Centerg ,lack Dawson, Fullbaelcg lfrank Farthing, lfndg Kenneth Hoffman, Guard, and Captain-elect Schultz. From the sixty boys who turned out for baseball at the beginning of the season there were but five lettermen. A squad of fifteen was chosen from this group by Coach Elliott. The players include Kenneth Hoffman and Roger Feathers, pitchersj Ray Bany and Harold Schwei- tzer, catchers: Kent llarkee, first base, Lyle Klinger, second baseg Keith Klarlcee, third base, Don Oarbarino, short-stopg Carl Snyder, infieldg Ned Vlvells, outfieldg Hob Fink, outfield, Richard ilfelum, outfield: and Bob DuRette, outfield. Thus far the C-L'-H-S baseball team has been quite successful in their competition with the various schools, winning five of the eight games played. The team has won the games played with lfstacada, Oregon City, Hubbard, illolalla, and Urest Linn. They have lost to lvoodburn, Silverton and Oregon City. A group of twenty boys, working under Coach Fridley, defeated the Nlolalla and Oregon City teams the two games played so far by the second string players. The tennis team of l93S enjoyed a very successful year, placing second in the lvillamette Valley League tournament held at Canby on April 23. The girls on the team this year were Rena Stefani, first. Arlene Andrews, second, Dorothe Larson, third, Janet Johnson, fourth, lean Hall, fifth, and Phyllis Dozier, sixth. Dorothe Larson and -lanet Johnson played doubles. The boys on the tennis team were Pete Raclcleff, first, Bud Kraft, second, Gale Quinn, third. and Bob Groh, fourth. Gale Quinn and Bob Groh played doubles. Klr. Sillze was coach and advisor for the team. Tennis matches were held with ifstacada, Newberg, Oregon City, and lvest Linn. XVith the loss of only four Senior team members, the tennis team hopes to enjoy an even more successful year in l939. Sem-oiul Row: t'1idileliaf'k, Ilzielcln-l't', 121-on, Volyin, Quinn. Mr.Silk1-. The team also entered in the sprint medley. Zane Yoder, and Roh Ascherel. Of these Herbert Bigej, Ted Shep- pard, Rex Schultz, lfd Daniel, Klerle Traschsel, Shirley Ritter, 'lied Patch, and Zane Yoder are letter- men. The team was coached hy Klr. Fridley. Several new records were set this year by the track team members. Klerle Trachsel set a new ten- foot pole vault record. Shirley Ritter hrol-ze his former shot put record. Herbert Bigej set a new quarter mile record, and flied Sheppard was undefeated in the half mile run in all of Canby's meets. llleets this year were held with lllolalla, Dallas, Sandy, and the Hill fllilitary state relays. XVith only five memhers of the team graduating this year, the nucleus for a very successful team next year remains. The team of hoys out for Cross Country this year included only one return letterman, Ted Shep- pard, who placed ninth in the V937-38 state Cross Country meet at Hill Military Academy. How- ever, Canby placed sixth in the Hill llilitary meet, running against seventeen schools from all parts of the state. The schedule for the season included a meet with Salem, two meets with Klilwaukie, a meet with Vllashington High School of Portland, and the Hill Klilitary meet. Uvest Linn forfeited a meet to Canby. Those who made letters this year are Captain Zane Yoder. Ted Sheppard, Paul Stan- gel, Ulalter Colvin. and lid Daniel. A very successful season for V739 is in view, due to the fact that there are only two senior lettermen on the Cross Country team. Seeonil ltow: Mr. I-Ilioil. Sheppard, Sehnltz. Daniel.
