COMMANDING OFFICER Uss CANBERRA CCA-705 January 18, 1969 From: Commanding Officer To: Ship's Company The cruise that this book com emorates was marked by a deescalation in the intensity of combat by both sides in the Vietnam War and by the initiation of serious peace talks in Paris. There was a growing recog- nition that the weight of United States power, at sea as well as on shore, was seriously damaging the enemy and attriting his resources to continue aggression. A These events are a tribute to the operations conducted by CANBERRA during this and preceding deployments more than any words can convey. They do not describe, however, the wonderful dedication, sacrifice, and skill of the officers and men of this ship that gave those operations against the enemy their full effect. There is no to keep the guns of the coordinatedscrew of the mention of the long hours on watch and on maintenance and equipment operating, or cooperation and consideration between men that makes a of the individuals that man this great ship, or tremendous logistical task to keep the ship armed, fueled, fed, and cared for as a first priority in placing a shell on target, or A of the concern, love, and faith each man continues to give his family as he pursues the difficult job of assisting another country to N resist aggression that is alien to his personal values. A This book has all our hearts in its preparation and content. It shows what we did, the problems we met and overcame, and the moments of joy and satisfaction as well as those of sadness and seriousness. No commanding officer can join in this experience withathemstrong . and gallant men who man our Navy today without a deep sense of p ggefandz S' accomplishment.
