captain oliver d. compton was born may 26,1918 to mr. and mrs. f. I. compton of pasadena, calif. he received a b.a. degree from the university of calif- ornia in 1940. he entered naval service that same year and after attending the u. s. navy midshipman school, uss prairie state, he was commissioned en- sign, usnr, february 28,1941. from march 1941 to september 1942, he served as first lieutenant on uss benham qdd-3975 and was promoted to lieuten- ant, usnr, followed in december 1942. after attending fire control school, he served in the gunnery department of uss wadsworthqdd-5167 from january 1943 to february 1944. from then until july 1945, he was gunnery instructor attached to commander service force and commander des- troyer force, u. s. pacific fleet, and the san diego shakedown group. he was promoted to lieutenant commander, usnr, in july 1945. he was graduated from rensselaer in 1947 with a master of science degree in ordnance engineer- ing. during this time he received a regular com- mission as lieutenant commander, usn. he was then ordered to duty as bureau of ordnance liai- son officer for guided missile matters at the cali- fornia institute or technology. from july 1949 to july 1952 he served as gunnery officer on uss pasadena Ccl-657 and uss valley forge Ccva-453. he was promoted to commander in july 1951. from august 1952 to august 1955, he was ord- nance officer of puget sound naval shipyard, and became commanding officer of uss alfred a. cun- ningham Qdd-752J in november 1955. while as maintenance and logistics officer on the staff of commander cruiser-destroyer force, u.s. pacific fleet, he was promoted to captain on april 1, 1960. in july, he was ordered to duty as commander des- troyer division 212. in september 1961, he as- sumed the duties of chief of staff for destroyer flo- tilla one. he served as commanding officer of uss bryce canyon Cad-367 from january 1963 to july 1964, when he became project manager, munitions, at the bureau of weapons, washington, d.c. he atten- ded the national war college from august 1966 until july 1967, when he received orders to as- sume command of uss canberra. he served as commanding officer A until november 23, 1966. captain compton is married to the former cathe- rine durrell of south pasadena, calif., and has two children, durell, 19, and margaret, 17. legion of merit and vietnamese cross of gallantry. 159 ,

captain worth harrington bagley was born in annapolis, md., july 29, 1924, the son of mrs. marie louise bagley and the late admiral david w. bagley. he attended the united states naval academy and upon graduation was commissioned ensign, usn, on june 5, 1946. after receiving his commission he spent his first four years of service on sea duty. from july 1946 to march 1947, on uss wiley Cdm-295 he served in the supply department. in april 1947, he was transferred to uss dickson Cdd-7089, serving in gu n- nery and damage control billets. from november 1948 through november 1950, he served in the op- erations and gunnery departments of uss chandler Cdd-7173. , captain bagley was a post-graduate student at the navalintelligence school from november 1950 to march 1951, when he received orders to serve as assistant- naval attache, saigon. following a tour of duty- with the staff of commander destroyer squadron five, he served as executive officer of uss Ieroy 'wilson Cde-4145 from january 1955 through june'1956. from july 1956 to june 1958 he served as as- sistant destroyer detailer with the bureau of person- nel in washington, d. c., before assuming his first command, uss bridget Cde-10245 from july 1958 until july 1960. after attending the naval war col- lege, he served as assistant to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff at the pentagon from july 1961 to june 1963. captain bagley was then ordered to assume command of uss lawrence qddg-45 until june 1965, when he was assigned to the staff, com- mander cruiser-destroyer force, u. s. pacific fleet, as training and readiness officer. he was pro- ted to his present rank of captain on july 1, 1966, prior to assuming command' of uss canberra cap- tain bagley served as executive assistant and naval aide to the secretary of the navy from september 1966 until september 1968. while serving in this capacity he was awarded the legion of merit. captain bagley is married to the former sydney mcfarland of santa barbara, calif. they have four children, jonathan, 10, judith, 9, worth jr., 8, and jeffrey, 6. he and his family make their home in la jolla, calif.
