Introduction The sea is a man's world. It is a world of beautiful sunsets and blinding storms, a world of muscles bending steel and minds struggling against complex prob- lems, The sea is a world where men live, work and share everything - everyday. During the period of the CANBERRA 66-67 West Pac Cruise, the sea was also a world of war. The men who sail the sea are strong through necessity and dur- ing time of war they sometimes go beyond human endurance to accomplish what is demanded of them. The sea demands their constant vigil and hard work and it de- mands separation from their families and their country for long periods of time. For weaker men the sea would demand too much, but the men of the USS CANBERRA have met the challenge. lt is to these men that this book is dedicated. This is the story of how they met the sea and endured time to accomplish their country's mission - that of freeing the Vietnamese people from aggression. Now the sea is calm and CANBERRA's big guns are silent. Each man has met the challenge of duty. ln his heart is con- fidence that he has done his best under strenuous conditions. This book can only provide glimpses of his life at sea and at war. Each man has his own memories and stories to tell. Let this book be a testi- mony of his dedicated effort and great sacri- fice for his country during the 1966 - 67 Westpac Cruise.
