Commander Robert John Brabant was born in Sacramento, California in November 1925. He attended Peru State Teachers College and the University of California at Los Angeles as a Navy ROTC STUCJIGHT. In June 1946, he was commissioned Ensign and ordered to the USS ADAMS IDM-275, where he served as Deck Department Of- ficer. Three months later, Ensign Brabant was transferred to the USS T.E. CHANDLER CDD-77l and in May 1947 he was ordered to the USS SOUTHERLAND CDDR-743l. He served as Combat Information Officer,ASW Officer, and Communications Officer during this period. In March 1948, Ensign Brabant was assigned to the Electronics Material Officers School at Treasure Island, California. Upon com- pletion of an eight month course ofinstruc- tion, he returned to the USS SOUTH ERLAND CDDR-743l. In June 1949, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. From April 195O until July 1952, Lieutenant figl Brabant was attached to Staff, Com- mander Amphibious Group ONE as Assis- tant Communications Officer and Signal Of- ficer. During the Korean War he partici- pated in several amphibious landing op- erations, including Inchon fSeptember 19505. Shortly before leaving Commander Am- phibious Group ONE, he was promoted to Lieutenant. In July 1952, Lieutenant Brabant reported to the U.S. Navy Post-Graduate School in Monterey, California. In June 1953, he was transferred to Staff, Commander Service Squadron TWO and subsequently served as Staff Electronics Officer and Communi- cations Officer until December 1954 when Lieutenant Brabant became O era ions O p t' f- ficer for the USS AMMEN IDD-5275. He reported to the Naval Security Group Headquarters Activity, Washington, D.C, in April 1956 and he was assigned to Facil- ities Engineering,Researchand Develop- ment. During this tour, Lieutenant Brabant r was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. In June 1958, he was ordered to Staff, Commander-Destroyer S qu adron THIR- TEEN and twenty-one months later Lieu- tenant Commander Brabant took command of the USS PIVOT CMSO-4635. After attending the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island from August 1961 until June 1962, he was ordered to the Naval Communications Station at San Francisco as Executive Officer. Shortly after his arrival he was promoted to Com- mander. Prior to becoming Executive Officer ofUSS CANBERRA ICAG-21 in October 1965, Commander Brabant was Commanding Of- ficer of the USS UHLMANN CDD-6785. He is married to the former Constance Hall of Los Angeles, California. Commander and Mrs. Brabant reside in San Diego, California with their two children, Robert Kirklan, 18, and Edward Henri, 9.
