Captain Edwin M. Rosenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Rosenberg, was born at Moscow, Idaho, on 24 February 1919. He graduated from high school in Rock Island, Illinois, and attended Augustana College in that city before be- ing appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1938. As a member of the Class of 1942, Midshipman Rosenberg was graduated and commissioned Ensign, USN, on 19 December 1941. He was subsequently promoted to his present' rank of Captain on 1 July 1961. From 1941 until 1944, Ensign Rosen- berg served aboard the USS OMAHAICL-41 as Assistant Navigator, Assistant First Lieutenant and in four Gunnery Depart- ment billets. He was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade on 1 October 1942 and to Lieutenant one year later. h In 1945 he was designated a Naval Aviator, serving with a patrol squadron and being promoted to Lieutenant Com- mander the same year. He subsequently served as Navigator aboard the USS RUDYERD BAY ICVE-1081 before being re- tired from active service in 1947 as per- manently incapacitated for duty. Lieutenant Commander Rosenberg was recalled to active duty in 1948 and served until 1950 as an instructor in the Seaman- ship and Navigation Department at the U.S. Naval Academy. Pursuant to an Act of Congress, he was restored to the active lists of the Navy in September 1950. From 1950 to 1953, he served first as Executive Officer aboard the USS VOLEGESANG IDD- 862i and then as Commanding Officer aboard USS LAC KWO O D CDE-2191. He Sub- sequently served in the Fleet Operations Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and in 1954 took command of the USS GURKE IDD-7835. He was pro- moted to the rank of Commander on 1 March 1954. I From 1956 until 1963, Commander Rosenberg served on the staffs of both Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet, as Op- erations Control Officer, and Commander- in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet, as Director of Strategic Studies. He was also Ad- ministrative Aide to the Secretary of the Navy and attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In 1963, Captain Rosen- berg took command of DESTROYER DI- VISION 232 in' Long Beach, California. Prior to assuming command of USS CANBERRA, Captain Rosenberg was at- tached to Staff, Commander FIRST Fleet, as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Readiness. Married to the former Christine Leland of Des Moines, Iowa, Captain Rosenberg is the father of two sons, Eric and Edwin. He is an avid sailor and has participated as Navigator in numerous ocean yacht races including the 1950, 1960 and 1962 Bermuda Cup Races. 'I
