Class of 1987 Presents Toot Canastota Junior-Senior High School Canastota, New York MAKING THE RIGHT MOVES . . . Table of Contents Dedication 3 Administration Faculty 5 Senior t 3 15 Underclassmen 67 Sports ; 81 Activities 103 Ads 121 Jr. High Supplement 137 Making the Right Moves —that's what our years at C.H.S. have been. From the classrooms, to the arts, to the sports teams—we have met with success all the way. It’s a good feeling, and one we'll remember. We’ve had to make a lot of decisions this year. College, work, armed services, marriages—each of us has moved in our own direction. We leave one more success with you as we move on—our yearbook. It's a strange medley of peo- ple, and things, and memories, and dreams—a group photo album. It’s also our last chance to be remembered after we're gone. And, it marks the end of a time in our lives that will never come again. Years from noiv, we will look back in our memories, and treasure this book as the last reminder of our high school life. The chess game symbolizes our time here. Complex, chal- lenging, many-sided—we have struggled and won. Is in the game, we've made the right moves. Now it's your turn! 2 1987 Toot Dedication Wherever she is, there is always a group of students clustered around her: in her office, in homeroom, in the hall, or even the lunchroom. She cares about each one of us and gives us all our own nicknames, from Cropper and Penguin to Blueberry and BonesieGifted with a unique sense of humor, her play-by-play commentary puts the networks to shame. And who could forget the cheer that she and her field hockey team led in this year's Homecoming pep rally? We were surprised and amused to hear her say: Gimme a B! Gimme another B! Gimme another B! Gimme One More B! What's it spell? And the entire field hockey team replied, with their fingers to their lips, BBBBBBBUl She has touched our lives in a special way, and we, the class of 1987, dedicate our yearbook with love to Coach Marcia Laidlaw. 3 Moving On .. . Mrs. Caezza is retiring this year after many years of teaching French at C.H.S. Her colorful bulletin boards and room decorations, making French Christmas cards each year, how to say Bonjour (hello) and Merci (thank you), listening to the narration tapes for our books, and repeating after the narrators over and over to learn pronunciation will always remain in our memories. And how about the time one French 3 class held a party for her on the last day of school? They even had a cake, although they made a mistake lettering it. It said, We amuse you in French instead of We love you . It wasn't easy learning a new language. English was something we took for granted until we started to learn a new form of communication. Often our favorite answers were What? or Je ne sais pas (I don’t know). But Mrs. Caezza didn t give up on us—she kept helping us and challenging us. For that, we are indebt- ed to her. We are grateful for the effort she spent on us and wish her the best of luck in the future. 4 The Bishop Our faculty and administrators are well represented by the bishop, an ancient symbol of wisdom and counsel. Their guidance helps us to move in the right direction. 5 Administration Vincent Albanese Superintendent Craig King Assistant Superintendent Board of Education Margaret Peters; Stephen Fisher, President; Barbara Hopsicker; Mary Fresina, Adm. Secretary. Eugene Pavone; Bruce Pallas; Wesley Hood; James Caldwell; Vincent Albanese, Superintendent; Craig King, Assistant Superin- tendent. Garad Williams Principal Students, you must remember that you are our citizens of tomorrow. School is just a short practice in life. You learn to obey rules, work towards goals, and to get along with people younger than, the same age as, and older than you. Your teachers provide experiences and practice in do- ing so. Enjoy your high school years. They are very valu- able and cannot be relived. Seniors, take the lessons learned at Canastota High School and be the best that you can, no matter what you do. Learn from both your mistakes and your successes. Good Luck!! It has been my pleasure to work with the Class of 1987 and watch you mature into young men and women. You can be proud of your accomplishments and of being part of a rich heritage at Canastota Central Schools. Your parents and the staff at CHS have worked diligently to prepare you for the future. I am confident that you will continue to be successful if you do your very best. To the Class of 1987, I wish you the best of everything as you face more challenges. Always remember that we take a great deal of pride in each of your future accom- plishments. Q. Udf Roger Thompson Vice Principal Arthur F. Martignetti Administrative Intern During the next few months, some of you will be enter- ing the world of work while others of you will continue to pursue your education at institutions of higher learning. At times you will be confronted with many challenges and tasks which may seem insurmountable or overwhelming. There will be occasions when you will have to put aside pleasures and good times so that you can apply yourself to a given situation, whether it be study in preparation for an examination or to satisfy a monthly installment obligation. However, you should clearly understand that the price of success in today's society is especially high, and you cannot expect to achieve it without good hard work and sacrifice. Is you pass along the path of life, always remember the keys to success in any life rest with the following: Being victorious over anger, fighting the bitterness of defeat and weaknesses of life, smiling when tears are close, hating hate and loving love. Though ending with a discouraging record, the caliber of this year's soccer team was never re- vealed. Is many as five games were lost in the last five minutes of the contest. One game that really sticks out is a 1-0 loss to arch-rival Oneida, with our adversaries scoring with less than three minutes to go. Coach Nichols named first-team all-league forward, tri-captain Rollin Reed as the team's MVP. Other stand-outs were juniors Frank Mitch- ell and Frank Milana, along with honorable mention all-league senior tri-captains Tracy O'Hara and Jeff DiVeronica. Gaudette With first year coach and former CHS tennis star. Miss Hopsiker leading the way, expectations for this year's tennis team were high. Many players returned from last year's team, but the Raiders just didn't have the fire power to compete in a tough Tri-Valley League. The Varsity finished with a record of 1-13, al- though playing very competitive tennis the entire year. The MVP's for the Raiders were Mary Ann Gaudette and Tracy Jones who teamed together to make a solid first doubles team. Coach Hopsiker mentioned that the team performed very well against arch-rival Oneida. Seniors on this year's team were: Amy Beth Hatch, Kittie Hoch, Jeannine Finocchiaro, Shelley Cerio, Tracy Jones, Laurel Marchetti, Laura Starrs, and Julie Yorton. The JV's finished 8-6 overall and look forward to improving the future of Canastota tennis. Coach Hopsiker giving the girls basic techniques. 85 Football Varsity 4s the 1986 football season began, the Raiders were looked upon as favorites to win the league title. Three weeks into the season, Canastota was still atop the TVL standings. Then the Raiders encountered some tough losses. It probably could be a year looked upon as two seasons divided in half. A 3-0 start, and a 1-4 finish. Coach Borgognoni said the Oneida game was very exciting, and the Camden game was an exceptional performance. Eric Brown ivas named the team's MVP. Other stand outs included Tom Farr and Tom Gleason. Farr, Gleason and Jack Milmoe achieved first-team all-league status while many other Raiders garnered second-team and honorable mention awards. Coach Borgognoni stated, We were in every ball game and with a break or two we could have gone all the way to the Dome. Our team played good, hard-nosed football. Losing 17 seniors to graduation, '87 could be deemed a rebuilding year. Tri-captains to lead the Raiders next year are Dave Palmer, Mark Caron, and Dave Malbouf. .mulh ■ UlCTUr luirran uusmauusraii . t uirnri : ! gl UUM5T0U First Row—A. Manaseri, T. Farr, D. Rainboiv, K. Junior Varsity Ending with a third place finish in the Tri-Valley League, and a 5-3 record overall, it was a successful season for this year's JV football team. Some high points of the season were beating Caz with less than two minutes remaining in the game, and defeating both Camden and VVS in the last three minutes. Of course, crushing arch-rival Oneida on the final Saturday of the season, 25-12, was a tremendous victory. Coaches Salamone and New named ]im Jaquin, who had 8 TD's, 2 Interceptions, and led the team in scoring with 50 points, the team MVP. Other stand-outs were tough to determine because, the boys played together; it ivas always a team effort. Many of these young men will be moving up to varsity next year, and will try to carry on the strong Red Raider football tradition. Row A: J. Ferrante, M. Brown, G. Farr, A. Pickard, T. Patterelli, B. With a close loss to VVS in the last minute, and also holding high scoring Oneida to a 0-0 tie for three quarters, this team could've easily finished 5-1-1. Coach Pest ell pointed out his back field of Brian Sheid, Craig Rouse, Cory Alter, and Jeff Alger as being exceptional, and linemen Phillips and Thayer for turning in good performances. With an impressive 28-2 overall record, the varsity girls volleyball team accomplished many goals this year. Improv- ing on last year's record was something no one thought they could do, but they did. With a young team comprised of only three seniors, Coach Laidlaw had a challenge. Highlights to the season were snapping the win streak of Solvay, winning the first ever Beaver River Tournament Championship, de- fending their Christmas Tournament Championship, Tri-Val- ley League Title, Class C Section 3 Title, and Class C Re- gional Title. That list alone speaks for itself. The Raiders have now won their ninth consecutive TVL Title, and second straight sectional and Regional Crowns. Regarded as a weak team at first, the girls really proved a point to all in the sectionals. Starters usually were sophomores Kim Ladd and Mary Ann Gaudette; Juniors Brenna Sterling, and Dorothy Smith; and Seniors Lorrie Eastwood and Barb Galavotti. Tri- Captains were Karen Carson, Lorrie Eastwood and Barb Galavotti. The JV volleyball team captured the league title with an unblemished 14-0 record. Their only loss of the year came at the hands of Solvay. The girls also won their Christmas tournament. Leading the JV team this year, and expected contributors on varsity next year were Sue Otts, Jessica Kirk, and Karen Kirk. The team was guided by first year coach Ms. Hopsicker. A mainstay here at CHS has always been a strong wres- tling program. This year was no different then in years past. Capturing their ninth consecutive league title with an unblemished 7-0 mark, the Raider wrestlers rolled all over the Tri-Valley League. In non-league competition the raid- er matmen were just as tough, going 7-0 in those matches also. The raiders have wins over state-ranked Queensbury and Fulton to their acclaim, as well as tournament victories in the Suburban Council Tourney and Class B, Section 3 Tournament. Second place finishes were won in the Canan- daigua, TVL, and Section 3 Meets. Individually, Tom Gleason successfully defended his section 3 title, and he and Mike New both moved on to the state meet. Mike as well, won the Section 3 Title. TVL All-Stars were seniors Gleason, New and Smith, and Juniors Palmer and Moore. Outstanding records were achieved by all of these wres- tlers; especially Gleason who finished with the most wins in school history. The JV team also had an outstanding year facing tough competition. Seniors on this year's team were T. Gleason, M. New, K. Smith, J. Barbieri, T. Bennett, and P. Savage. Rich Sanderson finished the year undefeated at the 177-215 weight classes. 9S . In addition to the state championship, the girls won their first Section III cross-country title along with their third consecutive Tri-Valley League championship. They continued their consecutive dual meet win streak to 22 wins over the past three seasons. The team also won the Liverpool Invitational, Gloversville Invitational, Baldwinsville Invitational, Bishop Loughlin Invitational in New York City, the Weedsport Invitational and the Tri-Valley League Championship Meet. The team placed second at the prestigious Penn State Invitational and the McQuaid Invitational. The team was led by Patti Wiegand who finished her cross country career undefeated in her four years of Tri-Valley competition, won her third con- secutive Section 3 title, and finished 2nd in the state meet after winning state titles in 1984 and 1985. She was named 1st team All-State for the fourth consecutive year. Mary Beth Duffy, another senior, finished second behind Wiegand on the team in numerous meets and was named a TVL All-Star for the fourth consecutive year. Another senior, Jessica Marusa, was enjoying a good year until injured in the middle of the season, but provided outstanding leadership for the team. Kellie Gagen, another senior, was also a member of the team. Five outstanding junior high students contributed greatly to the team's outstanding year. Eighth graders Laurie Brophy and Diane Galavotti along with seventh grader Kelly Stankivitz were named to the Tri-Valley League All-Star Team. Freshman Maria Bertolino and seventh grader Missy Campbell also contributed greatly with several outstanding performances. It is a small country in South America and is located in the Equator; it has between eight and nine million people. I'm living in your nice city for this year. I enjoy living in your city; it is interesting to live in a small city and to know almost all the people who live in Canastota. This year is wonderful, and it will help me in my future. The experiences I have here will change my life. The people in Canastota are friend- ly. I want to say thanks: first, to my three families I had this year. They are great families and wonderful peo- ple. They helped me in everything. Second, I want to say thanks to all the teachers, students and people that I met this year. And the most important to whom I want to say thanks is to the Rotary Club for giving me the oppor- tunity to live here. Thanks to every one of you; I had a wonderful year. Of course, I want the people who feel and think that they are my friends to write me next year. Remem- ber, 1 am your friend. W7 The Yearbook Staff Row A—M.B. Duffy, L. Sterling, S. Cerio, P.
