We thought we were so old. The day we had show and tell. And brought in some fool's gold. Remember a few years later. We thought we were so divine. We teased the first grade babies At the ripe old age of nine. Remember back in sixth grade. We looked at him with a sigh And dreamed of all the coming days In a huge new junior high. Come Sail Away .. Now it's years later As graduation day draws near. We think of bittersweet memories And remember yesteryear. Remember the hellos and laughter. Talk over all our fears. Reflect on learning and sharing Before the goodbyes and tears. 1986 Toot Canastota High School Canastota, N.Y. 13032 Table Of Contents Yearbook Staff 3 Exchange Student 4 Dedication 5 Faculty and Administration 7-14 Senior Informals 15-32 Top Ten 36-37 Senior Formals 38-59 Camera Shy 60 Underclassmen 61-69 Sports and Activities 71-102 Baby Pictures 103-107 Advertisements 115-126 Editors Raquel Kelly Patane Jackie Larca Mr. Tornatore took that picture . .. Hei Vaan! I'm Heidi Rautionmaa (roll your R), and I come from Finland as a Rotary exchange student for one year. I'm getting new experiences and learning many new things. I found Canastota a very nice place and I learned to speak a little bit of English using my hands in the Italian way. I want to thank all of you who made my year so special. 1 just loved my stay here and my three host families were great. I'm sure I'm go- ing to miss you. It doesn't matter how far away you are, you'll always be part of my good memories. You never know how soon we might meet again. All of you are always welcome to my home in Finland. P.S. American food is a different story. I gained weight . . . but I had sooo much fun—even if I couldn't yodel or tend goats. With Love, Heidi 4 1986 Toot Dedication Mr. Rolland Ficken The Class of 1986 remembers ... classes in which learning was fun . . . a teacher with some unique ideas . . . a coach whose teams were almost always gentlemen ... a person who was interested in us and our activities .. . a friend who offered encouragement . . . a man who wore many hats, including the green beret . . . Mr. Ficken, we dedicate our yearbook to you. Fm ready .. Are you? “The Library just won't be the same. Is Miss Martin really retir- ing? What do we remember of Miss Martin's thirty-six years of service to Canastota? Our parents remember someone always willing to chaper- one, always helpful, always ready to listen and talk. We remember the help in researching the dreaded term papers, the hours of help on yearbooks, the willingness to stay a little longer to let someone finish a report. We all remember a person who was interested in us, who shared anecdotes about her family with us, who frequently admonish- ed us for our misbehavior in the Library Media Center. We remem- ber libraries in six locations. (Miss Martin, do you remember moving the library five times?) Sailing Yes, Miss Martin is retiring and the Library just won't be the same. Good luck and enjoy your retire- ment! Into Retirement After twenty years in the offices of the Canastota Schools, Mrs. Benenati is retiring on April 30. We want her to know that we do appreciate the lectures and calls to the Guidance office to make us get our applications in on time and to give her our Social Security num- bers. She played mother hen to all of us and kept at us until we did what was required. We are sure she will be missed. Mrs. Benenati, we wish you a long and happy retirement! On board I’m the Captain; So climb aboard, Well search for tomorrow on every shore, And well try, oh Lord well try to carry on. Garad Williams, Eugene Pavone, James Caldwell, Wesley Hood, Dean Yorton, Vincent Albanese 8 LETTERS TO THE CLASS OF 1986 You must face the challenge of determining your own futures. Your success must be measured by your ability to become all that you are capable of becoming. Your future can be created and actualized by your ac- tion or inaction. You must apply your gifts and talents, work with dedication and self-discipline, have high expectations for yourself and convert every chal- lenge into an opportunity. You must utilize the academic and social skills you have developed at Canastota Junior-Senior High School to meet the challenges of the future. Craig King, Principal Mr. Craig King There has been much emphasis regarding educational excellence during recent years and its importance in strengthening our schools as well as our society. As a newcomer to Canastota this year, I have observed and participated in that striving for excellence. I have observed the fact that we have the ways and means to build a better society, a stronger America, a future for our world. You, the seniors of Canastota Central Schools, are charged with the responsibility of carrying out that task, and you can do it and do it well. It pleases me to see the class of 1986 embark on their journey to fulfill life's dreams. Some of those dreams aren't even thoughts as yet, while others are just forming and still others are in their infant stage. Life holds a multitude of opportunities and challenges for each of you. Be all that you can be; and what- ever you do, in word or deed, do it to the best of your ability. Jeffrey A. Davis, Assistant Principal Mr. Roger Thompson Mr. Jeffrey Davis Let each become all he is capable of being. Each of you has a particular set of abilities and talents. Life is a set of challenges. Your challenge is to develop your talents and abilities to their fullest. As an educa- tor, it is most satisfying to see students begin to reach their potential while in school. As years pass, it is most gratifying to read or hear of former students' ac- complishments. Strive to reach your dreams. Take responsibility for your future. You are tomorrow's citizens and leaders. In my opinion, our future is in good hands. My per- sonal wishes go out to each of you for future success and happiness. Roger E. It was a very balanced team, full of dedicated workers who worked well together. TVL honorable men- tions were given to Mike DiGiorgio, Bob Duffy, and Bob Swain. DiGiorgio, Duffy, Swain, Scot Smileuske, and Steve DiVeronica were the team's seniors. The final record was 3-4. It was not a kept secret that the girls' squad was highly successful. They were undefeated in Tri-Valley competi- tion, but coach Pino's ambitions did not stop there. The girls won the Gloversville and Weedsport Invitationals, and they earned 2nd place in many others. The team was ranked second in Section III and 14th in New York State. Patty Wiegand, Mary Beth Duffy, Jessica Marusa, and Laurie Brophy earned spots in the TVL All-Star team, and Maria Bertolino earned an honorable mention. With no one being lost to graduation, the outlook for the fu- ture looks bright. The high point of the season was Patty Wiegand earning the state championship. Patty has done this two years in a row, and she is the first girl to earn the title in two different classes. She has been undefeated in the TVL for the past three years. Best wishes go to Patty in her track career for her senior year. 73 SOCCER Row 1: S. Fusillo, M. Der, J. Moore, J. Lamkin, A. Long, F. Milana, T. O'Hara, H. Le, Row 2: Coach Ficken, J. DiVeronica, S. The team was 5-9 in league competition and 7-11 overall. Some outstanding perfor- mances were given by R. Reed, B. Damore, H. Le and T. O'Hara. Reed and Damore earned All- league Honorable Mentions. Coach Ficken, expects a more ex- perienced team for next year with seven returning starters: Milana, Damore, Reed, Moore, O'Hara, Sanderson and DiVeronica. The team finished second place in the Tri-Valley League with a final record of 5-2-1. Outstanding per- formmances were turned in by Steve Rouse, Tom Gleason, Pat Becker, Pete Smith, Craig Bailey, Mark Galton and Eric Borwn. Sen- iors on the team were: Becker, Rouse, Smith, Bailey, Galton, M. Talbot, J. Fradenburg, L. Tuttle, D. Scheid, T. Merrell, S. Musachio, A. Chandler and A. Link. In Coach Salamone's opinion, this record is very misleading. Many of their games were close by the fourth quarter, and they always seemed to just miss out on the extra point that they needed. Coach Salamone was impressed at how well the team struck together during rough times when other teams would have fallen apart. The Co-MVP's were Rick Smith and Bob Hicks. J.V. CHEERLEADERS Row 1: J. The team also tied for first in the Tri-Valley League with Holland Patent and Clinton. The team's leading rusher was Brian Cassell and lead tacklers were Brian Cassell and Gary Fabrizi. Coach Pestell feels that Cassell, Fabrizi, J. Jacquin and C. Rouse are players to watch in the future. Coach PestelTs assistant coach was Tom Schneider. Row 1: N. Fox, K. Mascari Row 2: S. Der, K. This situation did not prevent the team from working hard, and some excellent perfor- mances were given by Mike DiGiorgio, Rick Smith, Bob Swain and Scot Smileuske. The high- point of the season came at the end when DiGiorgio placed sixth in the two-mile at Sectionals, and Rick Smith placed sixth in the 55M hurdles at the same meet. They also went on to be- come Section III champions. The girls performed incredibly well as individuals. Patty Wiegand earned the second fastest 1500 M time in the nation, won the Dutchman Games, The Brown Invitational, the Yale Invitational, and the West Point Invitational. She was second at the Eastern States and the NYS championships. She participated in the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden, which became a learning experience for not only Patty but her Coach Pino as well. Shawn Coleman rated among the top ten in the East in the 55M, 300M, and the long jump. She also was Section III champ in the 55M. Heather Flynn took Class B Section III championship in the 1000M and Mary Beth Duffy fin- ished second in Class B in the 1000M and 300M. Coach Pino will be losing Shawn Coleman, Jody DeFazio and Julie Heintz to gradu- ation. 79 Varsity Basketball Row 1: T. Farr, R. Babowicz, D. Scheid, B. Damore Row 2: M. Caron, A. Link, T. Kimpton, S. Evans, C. Minckler, C. Bailey, Coach Tornatore Although there were no returning starters from the previous year. Coach Tornatore feels the inexperienced team did very well. “The team improved greatly throughout the year. They lost some very close decisions which could possibly have turned their record around. They held a 7-13 overall record with a 4-10 in TVL competition. Bob Damore was the team's leading scorer and top foul shooter, while Mark Caron was leading rebounder. Damore and Caron were named Hon- orable Mention for the All-League team. Seniors on the team were: Craig Bailey, Todd Kimpton, Dave Scheid, Aaron Link, Ray Babowicz, Mark Galton, and Craig Minckler. 80 J.V. Basketball Row 1: S. Dodge, D. Malbouf, C. Clarke, T. Neverthe- less, they played some very tough basketball and earned an 8-12 record. Many of their games were close, as six of their losses were only by a total of 9 points. Steve Bisha was named as the team's MVP by Coach Borgognoni. Other stand-outs were Dave Malbouf and Jeff DiVeronica. J.V. Cheerleaders 82 Row 1: J. Fradenburg Row 2: M. Steele, D. Russitano, K. Despite these setbacks. Coach Ficken feels the team played well to get their 6-8 record. Outstanding players include Chris Galton, Matt Lavonas, and Kevin Sutton. Cheerleaders Row 1: N. Fox, K. Filey Varsity The 1986 Lady Raiders Basketball team proved to everyone that our school can have a successful girls' program. Their final record was 13-8 with an 8-6 record in Tri-Valley com- petition. The girls also earned their way to Sectionals for the first time ever. Coach Smith found it hard to pick any stand-outs as the team was very well-balanced with a different leading scorer just about every game. As Coach Smith said, The road ahead is bright for our team since 3 juniors, 3 sophomores, and a freshman all return next year. Leading the team next year will be JoAnne Capparelli, Jackie Marko, and Jill Harrington. The seniors on this year's team were Chris Filey, Brenda Chapman, and Lisa Riley. Row 1: B. Stanton, L. New, D. Clarke, M. Sorbello Row 2: J. Pestell, K. Glazier, K. Smith, J. Patane, A. Michels, J. Piersall IV. The J.V. Girls' Basketball team had a very good season for being such a young team. Barb Stanton led the team as leading scorer and rebounder, but she was definitely not a one 'wom- an' team. The girls worked together as a team should and earned a record of 10- 10. Coach Salamone feels that with continued hard work, we could be one of the top teams in the league next year. 84 Wrestling Row 1: M. Smith, J. McConnell, D. Aichner, J. Barbieri, B. Tornatore, B. Ladd, Row 2; Coach Laidlaw, B. Galavotti, B. Sterling, C. Rapasadi, E. Tornatore, S. Sgarlata, K. Carson. Absent: D. Chundrlek, L. Smith The CHS Varsity Volleyball team concluded the finest season in CHS history this past season. The Raiders captured their eighth consecutive league title with a perfect 14-0 mark. 'Stota has accumulated 69 straight league wins and over the past nine years are 98-1. The Raiders captured the Class C sectional title defeating Beaver River and then went on to defeat Southern Ca- yuga (section IV champions) in regional competition. 'Stota fin- ished the season at 27-4, ranked fourth in Section III, and set numerous individual and team records. Senior Ann Clark and Freshman Kim Ladd achieved All-Star status. Lost to graduation will be Ann Clark, Teresa Hopsicker, and Lenore Smith. The team fell under the guiding hand of Coach Laidlaw. 88 89 Bowling Boys' Bowling It was a very good year for Coach Tom Schneider and the Boys Bowling team. The team pulled off a 6-4 record and was high in contention for the league championship. The high point of the season had to be the 7-4 victory over Oneida which ended Oneida's 22 match win streak. Freshman Frank Skurpski was named a TVL All-Star. Other top bowlers include: Mike Lumbrazo, Chris Cerio, Rollin Reed, Aaron Chandler, Andy Cesarini, Doug Rainbow, and Mike Stankivitz. Cesarini, Lumbrazo, and Chandler graduate this year. Girls' Bowling: It was a year of learning for the Girls' Bowling team as the best of last year's team was lost to graduation. It was also the first year with a new coach, Melanie Dennis. Nevertheless, the girls did manage to gain four wins in league competition. Coach Dennis picked senior Jackie Larca as the team's sole stand-out. Hopefully with some experience, the team can live up to the reputation of their predecessors. Boys' Golf Row 1: S. Macera, J. Lamkin, Row 2: C. Cerio, J. Kulas, G. Anderson, R. Babowicz, Coach Borgognoni, Row 3: C. Bailey, T. Kimpton The Varsity Golf team came in fourth in Tri-Valley League competition and qualified in the Section III post season tournament. Senior Graeme Anderson was a medalist in the Tri- Valley League Tournament and was the team's MVP. Anderson and John Kulas were lost to graduation. Girls' Golf Coach Schneider, G. Borgognoni, L. New, S. Bailey, D. Hesler, S. White The 1985 Girls Golf team suffered from lack of membership and ended the season with a 3-13 record. Coach Schneider is looking forward to a building season in 1986. He lost Sue Bailey, Sue White and Diane Hesler to graduation. 91 Baseball Row 1: A. McNally, S. LeMay, Coach Borgognoni, M. Milmoe, M. Mascari, A. Linstruth, Row 2: T. Farr, R. Reed, S. Rouse, J. DiVeronica, D. Scheid, B. Damore The Cinderella story of the Tri-Valley League year had to be the 1985 Red Raiders Baseball team. The team earned a 13-1 record in Tri-Valley League competi- tion and a 20-2 total record. The '85 season marked the most wins by a Canastota Baseball team and the first TVL championship for the team in 18 years. The team went all the way to the semi-finals of the Class C-l Section III Tournament. The teams stand-outs were M. Milmoe, S. LeMay, and T. Farr. Seniors were LeMay, Milmoe, A. Linstruth, M. Mascari and A. McNally. Coach Borgognoni expects a good season in 1986 with six starters returning: S. Rouse, D. Scheid, T. Farr, B. Damore, R. Reed and J. DiVeronica. Softball Row 1: K. Ward, C. DiVeronica, C. Pickard, P. Coleman, T. Hopsicker, F. Musachio Row 2: C. Morris, L. Smith, L. Riley, A. Clark, B. Chapman, J. Harrington, J. Capparelli The 1985 Red Raider softball machine captured the first softball sectional ti- tle in the school's history, defeating Little Falls in the Class C championship. The Raiders finished with a 10-4 record in league action al- lowing them to take second place in Tri-Valley League. The Raiders lost seniors P. Coleman, C. DiVeronica and C. Pickard, but should re- turn a solid nucleus for the 1986 campaign. 92 Row 1: E. Brown, J. Wiegand, J. Dennis, C. Contreras, J. Inman, Row 2: Coach Wilde, S. Dodge, B. Swain, R. Smith, M. DiGiorgio, S. Smileuske, Row 3: A. Cesarini, K. Smith, M. Dwyer, A. LaClair, A. Chandler Although the 1985 Boys' Track team did not have a winning sea- son, many strong individual per- formances were given. John Wiegand attained the school record in the mile with a time of 4:32 and placed fifth in the Section III meet. Aaron Link scored well in the high and triple jumps, and Rick Smith did well in the 400 meter intermediate and 110 high hurdles. Strong per- formances were also given by Mike DiGiorgio, Andy Cesarini, and Bob Swain. Seniors on the team included J. Wiegand, J. Den- nis, M. Gilbank, and C. Contraras. The final record was 1-6 with a victory over Camden. The team was lead by new head coach Bob Wilde and assistant coach Rodney Williams. Outdoor Track Since they have won the league three years in a row, there can be no denying the domi- nance of the girls' track team has built over all competitors. This is shown through the number of girls who were Tri-Valley All Stars: Yvonne Caron, Shawn Coleman, Jody DeFazio, Patty Wiegand, Mary Beth Duffy, Heather Flynn, Jessica Marusa, Missy Boylan, Margaret Smith, Val Coleman, Janelle Pestell and Kim Flynn. With only one girl, Yvonne Caron being lost to grad- uation, it seems more than likely that Stota will repeat last year's 7-0 record. Row 1: M. Smith, M. Duffy, V. Coleman, S. Coleman, J. DeFazio, Y.
