The Toot staff picture is deceiving. As usual, there was great enthusiasm in the beginning, but as time went on it was put together by about five people. We would like to thank Miss Martin, Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Besl for all of their help and encouragement. The members of our staff who worked on the Toot your time and effort were greatly appreciated. A special thanks to Sue Bai- ley, Kim Field and Christine Filey who never complained when given a photography task. Thanks also to Arturo Vilchez, who came all the way from Mexico to print pic- tures. We cannot forget to thank those who provided us with the candids when we needed them. Our final thanks to Bret Sgroi for the artwork on our excellent cover. We think that this is the best yearbook to ever come out of CHS and a remem- brance of our best times. We will always be proud of our job on the 1985 Toot. 3 Florence DiPrima How does a class say Thank You for making learning fun? Thanks for being there to talk to when the world seems to be closing in on us. We appreciate it when you listen to our ideas and encourage us to contribute more. It is really in- teresting when you let us discuss things openly as a group, we learn a lot from it. The only way that the Class of 1985 can say it is by dedicating our yearbook to you, Mrs. DiPrima, Thank You. 4 Dedication • ' i LTY INISTRATION Vincent Albanese Superintendent ADMINISTRATION Garad Williams Assistant Superintendent Barbara Hopsicker, Margaret Peters, Mary Fresina. You have received an education that will serve you well as you pursue your future endeavors. I wish you health, happiness, and success throu iout your lives. Michael Marcelle Assistant Principal It has been a pleasure to have been associated with the students and staff of the Canastota Junior-Senior High School during the 1984-1985 school year. All of us have grown in so many different ways through the experiences that we have all shared. To the Class of 1985, I wish you the best of luck as you leave Canastota Junior-Senior High School. The memories of your years at our school will certainly last throughout your lifetime. To the Classes of 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1990, I look forward working with you to help our school grow in the upcoming years. Here everything is different for me. I've learned a lot about the customs and the people here. The times at Rotary and in the school have been very memorable to me. Everything was a new experience because I learned a new language, met different people and learned new customs. I want to thank the Rotary Club and my host families and all the people who helped me, too. I don't think that I am going to forget this experience or the people I have met. You always have a friend in Mexico! Arturo Arturo Vilchez How can I express my feeling for this town and Canastota High School? This is a very nice, new place with a different language and culture, than what I was used to. Now, I am getting use to this because I am learning to speak the language and making new friends. This has been a good experience for me, because everything is different from my country and the time spent away from my family. I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation to Canastota and it's friendly people. I am not going to forget Canastota and my friends. There will be a place in my heart where you will always stay. I want to thank all who helped me, during my stay in the United States. Finally, I would like to thank the Brown family because they have made my stay very enjoyable, and also Mr. Williams for making it possible for me to come to Canastota. Sincerely, your friend always, Carlos A. Contreras Loustaunau Carlos Contreras Loustaunau Natalie Buffler 16 Exchange Students I have truly enjoyed my stay in the United States. I miss my fam- ily and the beach, but the Prusinowski family with whom I am staying are very kind and loving. I am thankful for the opportunity to travel and see a new culture. The 'STOTA Red Raiders pro- vided the fans with their usual brand of hard hitting, hard tackling, and exciting football which has become the trademark of Canastota Football. The season started on a sour note as the Red Raiders were edged out by Frankfort-Schuyler by two points. This type of loss was an indication of the games that were to come as the year progressed. The Raiders were in every contest and gave an exciting account of their ability and desire to compete. The high'ight of the season was the upset victory over the de- fending Section III Football Champions in a game which thrilled and elated a large Homecoming crowd. The Raiders displayed that afternoon that they were definately a team that could rise to the occasion and gather in victory even when the odds were against them. MVP for the team was shared honor between Eric Brown and Keith Smith. The team record and skills learned, should prove invaluable as these people go on to another season of 'Stota football. The Raiders finished up a tough Tri-Valley League season with an 8-6 record, good enough for a third place finish. The predominately senior team played exciting basketball all year. Statistically, they were the best defensive team in the league, and many of the games were not decided until the last minutes of the contest. The highlights of the year had to be two dramatic wins over league power VVS. The last of which ended VVS's 47 game home, league unbeaten streak. The team also participated in the Sectionals. They defeated Herkimer and 2nd seeded South Jefferson, but lost a heartbreaking 45-43 loss to Jor- dan Elbridge in the Semi-finals. The season record for the junior Red Raiders was 12 wins and 8 losses and a fourth place finish in the Tri-Valley League. The team also highlighted their season by winning the Canastota Red Raider Christ- mas Invitational Tournament by defeating Oswego High School in a thrilling final championship game. Also attributed to this year's JV team was the fact that they won all of their non-league games as they earned a 6-0 record in that category. Leading the JV team this year were Mark Caron and Tom Farr at the guard positions with tremendous support being extended by Jeff DiVeronica. At the center position the JV's had Steve Evans backed up by his forwards, Aaron Link and Craig Minkler. The rest of the squad rounded out with Jack Milmoe, Steve Bisha, Rich Slaski, Jerry Steffenhagen, and Rick Bonaventura. With the ex- ception of only a couple of games, this spirited squad played every foe, league or non-league, tough. The girls began the season the same way they ended it — with a two point victory. Cindy Morris sank a close shot against Hamilton to ice a 35-33 victory over this non-league opponent to get the team started towards a rewarding season. As the season ended, the team defeated arch-rival Oneida 33-31 to avenge an earlier pounding by the Oneida Indians 43-18. That was the worst defeat of the season and the Lady Raiders put it behind them and played good basketball the re- mainder of the year. During their stay, the girls learn about the state government. The group is broken up into two parties and elections are held. The girls hear many state officials speak. Girl's State is an excellent opportunity for girls interested in government to learn more about politics. The purpose of the S.A.D.D. organization is to save lives and inform C.H.S. students on the seriousness of drunk driving. This year for fund raisers the chapter sponsored a dance, and sold S.A.D.D. keychains and stickers. They had a hotline during the Prom and Senior Ball to help f revent any lives from being ost due to drunk driving. The S.A.D.D. officers attended a S.A.D.D. convention in Madison County. They also contributed to the Besner fam- ily. The officers are Bob Weibezahl as President, Diane Hesler as Vice President, Johna Frink as Secretary, and Brian Beach as Treasurer. This year's involvement in the program greatly increased, but it would still like to see more student interest. Mr. Fox is the club's advisor. Ski Club S.A.D.D. Row 1: K. Tifft, B. Weibezahl, J. Diane Hesler was Homecoming Queen. Members of her court were Yvonne Caron, Gina Rossi, June Loomis, Wen- dy Boston, Laurie Wells, Candy Beach, Pamm Coleman, Steph- anie Walters, Missy Sommers, and Sally Poppleton. The quest for the Bronze Onion brought out class pride in everyone. The Seniors pulled together, even climbing onto each others backs, to topple the defending Juniors. The excitement wasn't confined to the gym. Floats were constructed all over town. The Sophomores won the competi- tion with the Senior float finishing a close second. The Senior float was constructed entirely from donated materials, and put together in one night.
