Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1984 volume:

1984 Life seems to be a puzzle—a set of pieces we juggle through time to create a final picture. Sometimes things don't fit, the time is not right, the piece is too big or too small or has too many facets to it. Sometimes we touch upon just the right piece—we pat it down in our lives and the picture is a little more complete. The class of 1984 presents to you a completed puzzle of our graduating year. A year where not all the pieces fit all of the time, but with a little loving juggling we put it altogether. Table Of Contents Faculty......................5 Senior Informals............15 Senior Formats..............33 Senior Directory............51 Activities..................57 Underclassmen...............79 Sports......................97 Advertisements.............115 2 DEDICATION sharing our joy, working alongside us and striving for the perfection that we all want. For this, Mr. Burton, we wish to dedicate the 1984 TOOT to you. We wish to dedicate the 1984 Toot to a person who has devoted much time and effort to our class. He has spent many hours dreaming and planning with us for all of our major events. He helped us orga- nize our Prom and Senior Ball and shared the memories of those wonderful times. He has become the Class of 1984's best friend. Laughing with us. DEDICATION 3 Exchange Student What can I say? New places, faces, language, customs, everything was different for me. Now, I see this is normal. At first this was pretty hard for me. I had many very nice times too. I have been learning something else with the experiences I have had. So I think I am not going to forget Canastota and the people I have met. I feel I have a place in my heart where you will always stay. I would like at this time to thank all those who helped me. Sincerely your friend always, Cesar Ocana Rafael Christmas American-style. Marcelle Assistant Principal It is my earnest hope that the graduating Class of 1984 have an honored place in our school's history—a class which will be a source of pride and accomplishment, and one which will symbolize the goals that Canastota Central Schools has established. The attainments of the Class of 1984 can be based largely on the foresight, supervision and guidance they received throughout the 13 years of their educational development. The Class of 1984 must utilize the academic and social skills that they have developed in school to meet the challenges of the future. TO THE CLASS OF 1984 Nothing is more rewarding to educators than to watch young people grow and mature. It has been a pleasure for me to have known all of you as both a teacher and as an assistant principal. Your years at Canastota Junior-Senior High School have been some of the most important years of your lives. All of you will learn to cherish the memo- ries you have had of your high school days. As you go out into the world, always remember that you are a product of the Canastota Central Schools. Your parents and teachers have worked hard to prepare you for the future. Be proud of who you are and what you have accomplished. Do your best at every task that is before you and always remember that my best wishes are with you. Sincerely, Michael J. We spent many hours thinking of ideas and planning the layout to make our yearbook unique. We thought we would not have any problem meeting our deadline in February, but as the time quickly approached, we found our- selves behind where we anticipated being, but with determination and a lot of help from our staff and other willing people, we made it. We would like to thank our advisors; Miss Mar- tin, Miss Dixon, and Mrs. Wright, for all the hours of help and support they gave to us in completing our goals. We would also like to thank Mrs. Filey for helping out with the typ- ing, and Mrs. Besl and her students who pro- vided pictures to make our yearbook better than any before. We hope we have put together a book that will bring back some happy memo- ries to all. The Pride of Canastota presents four concerts a year, as well as marching in all of the major parades in Canastota. Added to this are the performances at home football games by the Pep Band, and one concert performance by the Stage Band. The students in instrumental music in the spring attend the N.Y.S.S.M.A. solo and ensemble contest, on a voluntary basis, and the Concert Band performs as a unit. There are also two major contests the band participates in and our annual trip to Darien Lake caps off the year in a fun way. This year's vigorous schedule is conquered by the 63 of Canastota's finest young musicians. Senior High Chorus is a credit course open to all students in grades 9-12. Activities include five on- campus concerts per year, as well as numerous opportunities for solo and ensemble performances both in and out of school. Each student in chorus receives small-group instruction in addition to the regularly schedule fall-group rehearsals. In this way, individual talents and aptitudes can be de- veloped. 70 ACTIVITIES CHORUS first row: R. Gustin, L. Starrs, T. Jones, . Marusa, D. Jeffris, L. Bacon, S. Glen, L. Marchetti second row: C. HOMECOMING 75 MEMORIES Our freshman year started out great with Mary Jo Cesario as president, Lori Quain as vice president, Nhan Le as treasurer, and Chris Cerio as secretary. With Mr. Cass as our advisor, we sold Mama Lucia's pizza and made $800.00 in profit. We bought our window, and voted on our class motto, color, and flower. Our homecoming float that year took last place. The sophomore year with Miss Panek saw Mike Gleason as president, Steve Wright as vice president, Chris Cerio as secretary, and Nhan Le as treasurer. We worked together and our class rings were bought. That year our float placed last again. Our junior year proved to be very successful. Our new advisors, Mr. Burton and Miss Strong, were greatly appreciated. We had a magazine sale and profited $1500.00 for our prom. Officers that year were Nathan LeBlanc as president, Wade Smith as vice president, Chris Cerio as treasurer, and Mary Jo Cesario as secre- tary. We also had a carnation sale bringing in $100.00. The prom planning started, and we became the first and probably the last class to use the gym. Our prom was held on May 14, 1983 from 9-1 a.m. The band was the Whizz Kids, and the theme was We've Got the Night by Bob Segar. The total cost subtracting $700.00 brought in by tickets, sold at $13.00 per couple, was 500.00 dollars. Forty-nine couples, seven advi- sors, and six guests attended. We will always remember the decorating from 3—midnight on Friday, and the cleaning up at 10:00 a.m. Sunday after such a long night. For the first time, lights were put in the quad for cooling off periods. Our queen was Lori Quain with Steve Wright as king. The remaining court was as follows: Mary Jo Cesario, Julie Quain, Nhan Le, Terri Sgori, Mike Gleason, Matt Gagen, Wade Smith, Dave Burnham, and Dan Plante. Coronation was at 12:15 a.m. And the float . . . you guessed it . . . last again. 76 The last and final year, with Mr. Burton and Ms. Strong returning to us, was a year we'ed never forget. We sold cheese and sausage and made $1500.00 with Shirley Johnson winning a radio for first prize. We decided to go to Lake Placid for our senior trip on March 2, 1984. We spent the day enjoying winter sports and touring the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The senior ball was decided to be a semi-formal at the Oneida Hotel on June 21, 1984. We got our senior privileges and worked hard on our senior lounge with furniture donated by Mr. Burton. The senior class picnic was held on June 8th. Everyone spent the day practicing for their summer vacation. The senior class officers were Chris Cerio as president, Julie Boston as vice president, Terri Sgroi as secretary, and Nhan Le as treasurer. This year's homecoming was played against Camden. The court was Michele Read, Mary Jo Cesario, Heidi Eisenhut, Julie Quain, Lori Quain, Nhan Le, Chris Cerio, and Wendy Smith. We had a whole spirit week with Tuesday being 50's day, Wednesday as hat day, Thursday as dress up day, and Friday as jersey day. At the annual pep rally, we nev- er did achieve the bronze onion, but Nhan Le became our new Homecoming Queen with Wendy Smith as first runner up, Heidi Eisenhut as second, and Mary Jo Cesario as third runner up. And as the float goes, yup—last again. Little did we know that as freshman we were starting a tradition. Each of us has our own secret and most precious memories of our years here; some happy and some sad, yet all of them we will cherish; each one is a part of a special time in our lives. But, for now we'll put them aside and make new memories to add to them, for we know they'll always be there . . . just shadows in our minds. Julie Boston and Vicki Jaquin WE MADE IT TOGETHER 77 UNDERCLASSMEN CLASS OF 1987 Mary Beth Duffy, Dana Chundrlek, Patty Wiegand, Renee Giufre Beating even the seniors in the homecoming parade, the freshmen placed third in the float competition. Under the advisor of Mr. Cass, they began their first year in high school successfully. They sold 650 pizzas and voted on their class colors and motto. They purchased their class window and it was put in its place in the lobby. This year's officers were Renee Guifre, president; Pat Wiegand, vice president; Mary Beth Duffy, treasurer; Dana Chunderlek, secretary. With three more years to go, we wish you luck. At the fifth annual Christmas tournament, Canastota became the first repeat champion. Yvonne Caron and Julie Quain were se- lected to the All-Tournament team while Lori Quain won the MVP award. The most exciting matches of the season had to be the two against Camden, the second one clinching the title. The Raiders advanced to sectional play- offs. They beat Homer in the quarter finals and Marcellus in the semi- finals, but fell to Solvay in the finals; 10-15, 16-14, 15-4. Good Luck to next year's squad; may they keep up tbe tradition. 108 SPORTS BASKETBALL In what could be called a rebuilding year, the Raider Basketball team had a 3-11 league record. The Raiders lost a few close games in which a shot made here or there could have given this team a winning sea- son. Their overall record was 4-13. In the Second Annual Christmas Tournament, Canastota placed second losing to West- moreland. Bob Marko was placed on the All-Tournament team, the only Raider do- ing so. Bob Marko was the leading scorer with a 29 point game to his credit.
