Toot 1983 Presented by Class of 1983 Canastota High School Canastota, New York 13032 Seasons The seasons are changing and so am I I'm starting to tell my childhood good-bye I'm not the little kid I used to be, In some ways I'm different entirely. It's a little sad to see children play, to think I will never again be that way. Perhaps it is the future I fear, fear of losing something of the past that is very dear. Unlike loved ones, time we cannot hold; we pass by a mirror and realize it has made us old. It's just that the minutes, hours, and days go by so fast and happy times of the present soon become the past. Yes, it seems like yesterday that we were small, then suddenly years come upon us and it doesn't seem like time at all. Dedicated to the Senior Class by Lynnett Ondriezek The theme for the 1983 Toot is The Road Not Taken.” It was choosen because we felt it was descriptive of the Class of '83 in our journey. It symbolizes both memories of our school years passed and the road we will take in years to come. As graduates, many of us will choose the Road Not Taken for our next step in life. Laura Rainbow Robert Schnur We are proud to present our 1983 Toot. Along the way we missed deadlines, lost pictures but finally we got it all together. To Miss Dixon, Miss Martin, Mrs. Besl, Mrs. Filey and Mrs. Wright, we owe a special thanks for pushing and aiding us in finishing the job. To the staff, and for those who helped, we offer our gratitude for their time and efforts. A yearbook is for memories, we look back at our accomplishments and see where we've grown. Now we will open our eyes to future goals and ambitions. The 1983 Toot Editors: on the road not taken . . We'll miss her reminding us to get to our home- rooms, to type with more accuracy, to put commas in the right places and most of all we'll miss her smiling face in eighth period study hall. Best of everything Mrs. Peterson. En- joy your retirement. 6 Dedication In our four years of high school one individual has taken a special interest in the Class of 1983. He has given us assistance and guidance, provided leadership and advice and corrected us when we needed it. For these things and many others we will always remem- ber him. Since he has given us such a large part of himself we are pleased and proud to didicate this, our 1983 Toot to Mr. Michael Marcelle. 8 Senioritis 10 Valedictorian Top Ten Seniors Salutatorian Garret John Finocchiaro Vito If you wanna' dance, you gotta' pay the fiddler Michael Kenneth LeMay Mike The best way to make your dreams come true, is to wake up Joseph Bertolero Joe The contented man is never poor, the dis- contented is never rich. There, I experienced the true meaning of winter, where snowplows are considered toys and back-hoes and dump trucks are what is really needed to move the snow. I marveled at the wonder of Northern lights on a cold Arctic evening. The winter months I spent in almost total darkness, and the summer months were spent with sunlight day and night. Besides the climate changes, I experienced many cultural changes, diverse eating habits, a new language, and different moral values. One family that I stayed with was very helpful in teaching me the language and helping me to adapt to their culture. I quickly made lasting friendships and in no time I was ready to try and see everything! I became very close to my family which made it difficult for me to leave. With my friends, family, and Rotary I traveled to Norway, Finland, Denmark, and the Laplands. I truly enjoyed my life Swedish style. It was a year of immense personal development, fun learning, and just an all out great time for me. 44 Exchange Student The first day I saw Canastota on August 21, 1982. I have to admit it did not look that hot. Now that I have spent one year here and met all these great people with whom I have had so much fun, Canastota is really a great place to live. I would like to thank all the students and friends, teachers and all other people who have made this year so special to me. Of course, especially my three host families who have made me feel at home. The word Canastota brings up very nice thoughts and I thank you for that. During that time I have come to respect and admire all of you for your spirit, your dedication and your abilities. To the Class of 1983, I wish you the best of everything as you leave Canastota Junior-Senior High School and go on to life's larger challenges. To the Classes of 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988, I look forward to getting to know you all better in the years to come. Canastota Junior-Senior High School is a rich and meaningful institution because of its people. You, the students and the staff of the 80's will only serve to make it better. Everyone is given a duration of time to live and to work towards a fulfillment of their goals. So it is with your high school years. You have undergone four years of experience which you shall realize later in life as a bright spot of your youth, an attainment of a goal. You shall treasure these moments because they can never be replaced. In the past years you have spent at Canastota High School you have learned to be independent — to ac- cept others for what they are —and to learn that this is just a phase in your education, for one never stops learning. It will take dedication, perservance, earnestness, honesty and courage to be successful in your future endeavors. 63 David M. The year 1982 will be remembered as the year of the injuries, as the team was plagued throughout the season with injuries that left the Raiders undermanned at many of the skill positions. The final fall- season record was 3-4-1. The first home game, the annual Homecoming, was against arch rival, Oneida. The Red Raiders took command of the game right from the start but fell short at the end 24-14. The first taste of victory was to come on the ensuing weekend when the Red Raiders beat the Chittenango Bears. Victories were also welcomed in the final two games of the year. The Raiders pulled off a mighty upset as VVS tumbled 12-8, and then came back in the season finale beating the Clinton Warriors 21-6. Heading the 1983 Raiders will be Co-Captains Wade Smith and Mike Gleason. 93 Dave Reiss makes it first and ten against Oneida. J.V. Football First Row C. Button, J Albanese, B Bonaventura, S. Junior Lori Quain, third leading league scorer, was also selected to the first team all-star squad. Volleyball The CHS Girls Volleyball team continued the winning tradition at Canastota capturing the T.V.L. ti- tle for the fifth consecutive year with a perfect 14-0 mark. The Raiders captured third place in their Christmas tournament, dropping an exciting match with LaFayette and then coming back to defeat Sauquoit. Lori Quain was a selection to the all-tourney team. The Raiders qualified for the Class B sectionals for the tenth straight year. CHS defeated Bishop Grimes in the quarter finals then lost a close match to Solvay in the semi-finals. The 1982-83 Raiders concluded their season at 20-2, the most victories ever recorded by a Raider squad. CHS should be a power again next year with the loss of only two seniors, Kathy Carson and Darlene Hughes. Returning members of the 1983-84 Raider Volleyball squad are Juniors Heidi Eisenhut, Vicki Jaquin, Jovanna Lincourt, Julie Quain, Lori Quain, and Gina Stagnitti and Sophomores Yvonne Caron, Pam Coleman and Diane Hesler. 106 Girls Varsity Basketball The 1982 version of the Girls Raider Varsity Basketball team was a unique blend of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and one senior. The lone senior and captain of the squad was Nanci Knox. The remaining members of the team are: Juniors: Lori Kelly and Lynn Buckley, Sophomores: Carolyn Pickard, Sheri Eastwood and Janine Otts, Freshmen: Brenda Chapman and Kris Ward. Since the middle of November the girls have been working hard together to achieve a number of goals and objectives. These Raiders were willing to put in the extra time necessary to improve fundamental skills. The squad's main characteristic was pride. In the end they achieved what at first we thought impossible; VICTORY. Not only were they victorious scorewise, they were also harmonious in working together as a team to play good, sound basketball and to show good sportsmanship in the process. The boys' team was led by TVL All-Star middle-distance runner David Burnham. Together with Dave Reiss, Dave Byers, |ohn Wiegand and Doug Bell, Burnham helped the Raiders to present a formidable unit. Tim Wilkinson and Pat Becker demonstrated considerable progress in the hurdles and sprints as did Ron Herb in the jumps. The girls' team showed exciting promise as they finished 5th in the Cortland Invitational and 9th in the Christmas Re- lays competing against larger school districts in Section III. Two upperclasswomen led the Raiders. Senior Anna Fusillo and junior Wendy Smith provided strength in the shot put. Sprinter Shawn Coleman proved she was one of the out- standing sprinters and long jumpers in the Section. Freshman Nancy Harvey and eighth graders Patty Wiegand and Mary Beth Duffy gathered many points for the Raiders competing against some of the best distance runners in New York State. The hurdles improved greatly with Jody DeFazio and Kelli Cagen leading the way. Julie Mitchell and Mallory Metcalf had excellent performances in the jumps. Seventh graders showed tremendous potential led by Valerie Coleman. Michelle Steele, Stacie Sgarlata, Kellie Cassell, Mary Beth Popple, Robin Cooper and Katie Gleason. 112 Baseball The Canastota Varsity Baseball team of 1982 did an outstanding job turning in a 9-5 league record. After having been an underdog in the league for so long, the team made a marked comeback in the TVL. As a result of a total team effort, the Raiders came in second in the TVL and went on to Sectional play for the first time in 10 years. Last year's senior Bob Musacchio received the Most Outstanding award and was also, the leading hitter in the TVL with a .453 batting average, a TVL All-Star, joining him with awards were: John Dimao as a TVL All-Star, Mike Hopsicker for the Most Desire, senior Bill Cretaro as Most Improved and senior Andy White as Rookie of the Year. The Raiders expect a strong team back in the fight for this year's title for the TVL. The CHS team consisted of 3 seniors, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 3 freshmen, and 1 eighth grader. With this youthful group, the Raiders posted a 9-5 league record to finish behind VVS and Caz, in what was supposed to have been a rebuilding year. The Raiders placed senior Nanci Knox on the all-star squad for her fine performance at first base. Nanci committed only 3 errors at her position (.967 fielding average) and helped the Raider offence batting .351. Selected MVP for the '82 version of the Raider softball team was junior Julie Quain, with sophomore Diane Hesler receiving Most Improved honors. With a year's varsity experience, the '83 Raider edition should be a threat to league foes as only 3 seniors depart. Gone are 6-time state hurdler Charlie Smith, TVL All- Star sprinter, )im Clark, and TVL triple jump champion Randy Agans. Leading the Raiders this year will be junior middle-distance David Burnham. Along with Dave Reiss, Dave Byers and John Wiegand, the Raiders should score well in the distance events. Seniors Steve Hood and Mike DeFosse give the team depth in the weight events. Curtis Rainwater and Wade Smith will lead the sprinting corp. The hurdles show promise with Tim Wilkinson and Pat Becker im- proving with every step, and Casey Spencer will lead the jumps with help from Ron Herb. Girls Track After two disappointing seasons, the 1983 version of the Raiders will take a step in the right direc- tion in becoming one of the strongest teams in the TVL. Potentially, this year's team could be one of the finest in the history of CHS. Led by senior All-Star Anna Fusillo along with Ann Duffy, Lisa DeMauro and Lynnett Ondriezek, the Raiders possess some capable veterans. The return of shot putter Wendy Smith from Sweden will help booster the attack. All-Star sprinter and long jumper Shawn Coleman will be a difficult per- former to beat in the league and sectionals. Middle distance runners Candy Beach, Vicky Morey, and Marie Stanton will be joined by eighth grade standout Patty Wiegand. In the distance events, Nancy Harvey and Mary Beth Duffy will show their talents. In the high jump Yvonne Caron and Julie Mitch- ell will be atop the league. Caron along with Jodo DeFazio and Kellie Gagan will be leaping over the league in the hurdles. Lisa Riley will also help out in the weight division. Sophomore Betsy DiVeronica can be outstanding in the jumps and sprints, and Jodi DeFazio should be among the finest walkers in the league. Girls Tennis The Varsity Tennis finished their season with a 2-14 record. The first doubles team of Nanci Knox and Diane Hesler qualified for sectionals with a 10-13 record. At sectionals the girls were defeated in the third round with a very close match. The JV team ended their season with a 4-14 record placing them sixth in the league. 115 Homecoming 1983 Homecoming Queen Marrianne Smith and escort Mike Seniors float- 83 Conley juniors and their orange crush' Sophomores showing their spirit on their first place float 116 Congratulations to the Senior Athletes of 1982-83 FOOTBALL BASEBALL FIELD HOCKEY Roy Eisenhut Bill Cretaro Mike DeFosse Greg Cerio Ron Rinaldo Doug Hazen Dave Torrey Dave Reiss Dave Miller Dale Bonaventura lohn Bonaventura Andy White Patrick Milmoe Ed Cerasia Mike Relyea Daryl Cole Garret Finoccharo Jeff Grinnell FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Lynnett Ondrizek Robin Cesario Tammy Cesario Laura Rainbow Marrianne Smith Chris Stiles Daryl Cole |im Torrey Bill Cretaro Andy White Ed Cerasia Mike Lemay Bob Easterly Tony Damore Dave Torrey Dave Miller Todd Button Patrick Milmoe WRESTLING Dave Gleason Ed Cerasia Vinny Giufre Mark Hood Doug Hazen Roy Eisenhut Mike Relyea Mike DeFosse GIRLS BASKETBALL Nanci Knox Kathy Carson Liz Greene Darlene Hughes Lynnett Ondrizek Liz Smith VOLLEYBALL Kathy Carson Darlene Hughes SOFTBALL Kathy Carson Darlene Hughes Nanci Knox Debbie Notaro GIRLS BOWLING Cherie Relyea Lisa Carpenter Diane DeFazio Christie Cook BOYS BOWLING BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS Chris Stiles Lynnett Ondrizek Robin Cesario Tammy Cesario Laura Rainbow TENNIS Nanci Knox Michelle Bennington Ann Duffy Lisa DeMauro Christie Cook loe Bertolero Bob Easterly Brent Niles Casey Spencer WINTER TRACK BOYS BASKETBALL Tim Wilkinson Dave Reiss Anna Fusillo Bill Jones Bill Coleman Patrick Milmoe Tony Damore Greg Cerio Dave Torrey Tom Haralson 117 If the Shoe Fits. . . No one is so understanding, kind, and sincere, — thank you for be- ing a special friend. We all have to work together in order to exist and as well as our friends, our parents help us. They have watched us grow I'd like to thank you. Mom and Dad.
