The institution has survived . . . through maybe five generations now. Many of the same names flowing over from year to year, and the faces strangely simi- lar. Still, time, and its subtle, beautiful, but weakening forces push the institu- tion along through many changes—new locations, new rules, “Hey, we gotta 'nother new principal this year. But the names are the same and the faces seem strangely similar. Freshman—stumbling from door to door, searching for the right class, and the right teacher (they say she's pretty rough). Seniors waltz in late for class (with a thousand, well-rehearsed excuses, but no pass) without a worry—because there isn't time to worry. Sophomores watching Juniors watch- ing Seniors. Learning. Learning more than literature or mathematics or science. They learn about being a Sophomore (next year) or a Junior (it's been so long) or a Senior (finally). And then, more and more frequently, looking out at the real world and realizing how small we are. It feels strange when you're find- ing out it's real. And it feels strange when you come back and the names are the same and the faces seem strangely similar. And it feels good, because things haven't changed. Tim O'Hara
