Class of 1981 Presents Toot Canastota High School Canastota, New York There was the land. It was a good land offering food and shelter for the various animals who made their home there. It seemed the humans always were there but never took more than they needed, never made a mark on the land, never made a nusiance of themselves. Then came the white settlers—would the land be changed depleted, left useless? The land asked and found a people industrious, careful of detail and willing to preserve its beauty even though growth was inevitable. The people thrived, industry came prospered, stayed, changed, moved—the people gave the land meaning. As the land established its name the peo- ple found other needs. In order for these needs to be fulfilled churches and schools were built. There was a thirst—a thirst the ancient springs could not soley satisfy. The people had to know. 2 A building—buildings they would house the knowledge the land's children should know. Words—words of facts—numbers—figures of data filled the inquisitive minds. Basic knowledge was not enough—the children were still reaching for more. A goal—goals—standards to be met—require- ments—diplomas— formal graduation. The land has changed—a century of growth—of taking and giving it still exists. Politics, medicine. inventions, news, the volumns of a century of progress have passed out over the land, the thirst- ing children have been a part of it. They have made it possible. The 1981 Toot presents to Canastota the one-hun- dredth formal graduating class. We have learned from our heritage—it is part of us and we are part of the land. COLORED INFORMAL! Throughout our four years at Canastota High School, one individual above all others has been special to the Class of 1981. This person possesses a unique ability. He teaches us so that we want to learn. We enjoy listening to what he has to offer us. In addition to being our teacher, he has been our friend and counselor. He has laughed with us, listened to us, guided us, and, when necessary, dis- ciplined us. It is because of these and of all his other special qualities that we, the Class of 1981 take great plea- sure in dedicating our yearbook to Mr. Tom Dolan. Now I've heard everything! I announced the test for today, it won't be postponed until Monday. 5 William C. Yet, there comes a time in every person's life when he or she must move on. Mrs. Perretta will be leaving with the Class of '81, but the fond memory of her will remain with us. 9 11 1. D. Eisenhut 2. Still, time, and its subtle, beautiful, but weakening forces push the institu- tion along through many changes—new locations, new rules, “Hey, we gotta 'nother new principal this year. But the names are the same and the faces seem strangely similar. Freshman—stumbling from door to door, searching for the right class, and the right teacher (they say she's pretty rough). Seniors waltz in late for class (with a thousand, well-rehearsed excuses, but no pass) without a worry—because there isn't time to worry. Sophomores watching Juniors watch- ing Seniors. Learning. Learning more than literature or mathematics or science. They learn about being a Sophomore (next year) or a Junior (it's been so long) or a Senior (finally). And then, more and more frequently, looking out at the real world and realizing how small we are. It feels strange when you're find- ing out it's real. And it feels strange when you come back and the names are the same and the faces seem strangely similar. And it feels good, because things haven't changed. It seems like only a short time later however, that you are going through the graduation ceremonies and ready to start a new phase in your life. As you reflect on these four years, we hope that you have achieved the goals which you had set for your- selves in September of 1977. It is our hope that the years spent at CHS will serve as a foundation for each of you to realize your individual poten- tials. We are proud to have been associated with Canastota's 100th graduating class. May your future be successful and may the memories of your years at CHS be pleasant. Best wishes, frwJi 4. Garad A. In the beginning, it looked like our last deadline in February was a long time away. Yet, when that day arrived, we weren't sure we were going to make it, but somehow we managed. Now we look back and wonder what happened to all of our fantastic ideas and precious time. There is no possible way this tremendous task could have been completed if it weren't for our fantastic advisors; Ms. Martin, Ms. Dixon, and Mrs. Wright. They stood by us, pushing us to sell ads, helping us frantically search for one more page to meet a deadline, and helping us to learn to cope with each other. Thanks!! We also owe a lot of gratitude to those who helped but weren't on the staff, especially our FANTASTIC typist, Mrs. Filey. Some grasp thoughts of yesterday, but most look forward to tomorrow. We feel sure we will make new friends next year, but they will never be the same; as the ones we made here. There was something about CHS, that made this school better than the rest. It could have been times spent with friends, that we hoped would never end. We will always remember those athletic contests, where we tried to do our best. We celebrated many glorious times, and endured our many fears. But at long last, we have made it through four years. There were times to laugh, and times to cry. but now the time has come, to say goodbye. So from the Class of 1981, farewell CHS. Its really been fun!
