In the years we have shared with you, we have enjoyed being part of this pro- cess. Like friends and parents, we watch your departure from Canastota High School with both pleasure and apprehension. You have achieved one of the most im- portant goals of your lives with the guidance and support of the staff of the Canastota Schools. You now leave us to meet the demands of work or further schooling in a com- petitive society. Our final wish to you is that you meet those demands successfully and utilize the academic skills, as well as the human compassion you developed at Canastota High School, throughout your future years. Carson This year's CHS girls field hockey team proved that numbers mean nothing as 16 girls showed what determination and desire can do in winning their second consecutive Tri-Valley League championship, with an 11-1-1 record. The Raiders shut out 11 of 13 opponents, allowing only six goals, in registering their best performance of a Raider team. The most memorable game of the season was the second encounter of league arch-rival Oneida, as the Raiders avenged a previous contro- versial loss to the Indians, beating them 2-0 to guarantee the league title. The Raiders, for the second consecutive year, earned the top seed of the Section III class AB sectionals, but bowed to Watertown in the quarterfinals, 2-1. Earning all-star honors for CHS were seniors Jackie Austin, Kathy Milmoe and Juniors Anne Milmoe and June Worden. Playing in their last field hockey season were seniors Jackie Aus- tin, Chris Chariton, Laurie Markle, Kathy Milmoe and Bridget Tork who played a vital part in establishing a reputable field hockey pro- gram in the Tri-Valley League and Section III. 60 61 Varsity Cheerleading J.V. D'Amico, R Eisenhut, D. Bargabos, M. Rapasadi, T. Brown, D Hazen,). Clark, R Palmer, N, Guy, Coach Nostrand The Varsity Wrestling team is coming to the close of a very successful season. The team for the first time was ranked among the top 20 schools of New York State. The Red Raiders made it to the 19th position this year. The team had some very impressive dual meet wins over class wrestling schools like E. S. M., )-E, and Mohawk. In league competition the Raiders have won all their matches by wide margins and of course the league title depends on the last dual meet with Oneida. The Raiders are favored to regain that Tri-Valley title. The team was truly a team this year. Seniors that contributed greatly to the team were 145 lbs. Tim Brown (co-cap't.), 155 lbs. Mike Rapasadi (co-cap't), 112 lbs. Tom Passante, 126 lbs. Bernie Cleeson, 132 lbs. Bryan Person, 145 lbs. Nick Guy, 167 lbs. Dan Bargabos and at 215 lbs. Sam D'Amico. The team also excelled in tournament competition with an impressive Tri-Valley Invitiational tournament win over Lowville. The team is also looked upon as a top contender in the Albany Suburban Council tournament and the Section 3 class and inter-class competition. Congratulations to a great team and their coaches, Mr. Robert Beale and Mr. Dennis Nostrand. Especially to Mr. Beale, who is leaving the coaching and teaching ranks after 30 years of dedicated service to Canastota's sports and students. VARSITY BASKETBALL Row 1: Dan Powers, John Roden, Bob Caron, and Dean Eisenhut Row 2: Coach Glazier, Steve Olden, Mark Morey, Marty Todora and Rich Hastings absent: D, Stevens and V. Sparrow, R. Hylan The Varsity Basketball Team, under the mentorship of Coach Glazier, has compiled a 5-7 Tri-Valley League record and a 7-7overall record. Only the Holland Patent and Oneida games remain to be played. Seniors on this year's squad are Bob Caron, Rich Hylan, Rick Hastings and Vic Sparrow. 66 67 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Row 1: J. Hood. Cerio This year's edition of the C.H.S. girl's varsity volleyball team concluded another fine season capturing the Tri-Valley League title with a 7-0 record. The highlight of the league action was the home encounter of the Raiders and arch-rival Oneida where the Onion Patch and the Raider spikers totally destroyed the Indians. For the first time, Canastota held its own Christmas volleyball tournament with Notre Dame (Utica), Bishop Crimes and Sauquoit taking part. The Raiders were pitted against Sauquoit in the finals in what proved to be a very exciting match with C.H.S. eking out the championship. Jackie Austin was selected the tourney's M.V.P. and an all-star along with Lana McCormick to the all-star team. The Raiders, for the second consecutive year, received top seeding in the Class B sectionals, but were upset by Solvay in the semi-finals in a very controversial match. Receiving all-star recognition were Jackie Austin Debbie Cass, Melissa Taber, Lana McCormick, Anne Milmoe and Kathy Milmoe. Honorable Mention honors went to Ann Caron, Joann Cerio and Val Basilio. The Canastota varsity volleyball program in the past 2 years has accumulated an incredible 30-1 overall record, have won 14 straight league games, two first seed rankings in Class B sectionals and have won a sectional title — evidence of C.H.S. dominance in volleyball. Next year looks promising although we will feel the loss of seniors J. Austin, A. Caron, C. Chariton, J. Hood, L. McCormick, K. Milmoe, and B. Tork. 68 69 Row 1: A. Gaudette, K. They were as impressive with many one-sided victories. Their dual meet record was 13-1 but they also showed an awesome display of wrestling talent in some prestigious J.V. tournaments. In the Fulton Tour- nament the J.V. squad, featuring several freshmen, put 8 men out of 12 in the finals and won 6 championships. In the Tri-Valley Invitational they again repeated the performance, outdistancing their nearest opponent by over 90 points. Congratulations to the J.V. partici- pants and their coaches. 71 J.V. They spent many hours decorating the lockerroom, making signs and pins, victory socks, and a train cake with the words, Keep on the winning track” to show the team members that our school recognizes and appreciates their efforts. But that is not all there is to cheering. They also went to two separate competitions and were very successful. This years seniors were: Ann Caron (Cap't) Lisa Snyder (Cap't), Julie Hood, Robin Russitano, Renee Russitano, Nancy Keck, Mary Riley and the advisors were Miss Dixon, Mrs. Paolotto and Miss Metot. 84 SKI CLUB Row 1: K. Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Bruce Busch, again this year brought the football fans to their feet with their excellent dis- play of talent and showmanship. The band, con- sisting of grades 8-12 with 7th grade voluntary, performed two separate half time shows and in both displayed excellently designed drill and well executed music. The band will again this year be competing in the North Syracuse Pageant of Bands, where they made an excellent showing last year. They will once again be competing in parade competition, concert band competition and majorette competi- tion—where they placed 3rd in 1979. The 1979-80 marching band is one that we can be proud of and we look forward to seeing them on the field again next year. 94 Color Guard Row 1 T. Jaquin Row 2 D. Smith, M. Wimmer, N. Phillips, K. Each one of us possesses a talent. The challenge lies in developing it. A member of the Class of 1980 has met this challenge honorably. This person is )ohn Mengucci. John's musical talent is emphasized to a great extent by his musical achieve- ments. Last spring, Mr. Busch submitted John's name to represent our high school as a candi- date for the McDonalds All-American Band. This fall he found out that he had been select- ed as one of two students to represent New York State; two out of approximately 800 nominations. This reveals what an honor it really is. The McDonalds Band participates in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year's Day. John will be in the midst of this, representing Canastota and its high school by playing tri-toms and wearing our school's uniform. All of us have some talent. It is only those who have developed their talent that have truly succeeded. John's persisting dedication to this musical talent has paid off and accord- ing to the poet Thomas Wolfe, John Mengucci has succeeded. If a man has a talent and cannot use it he has failed. If he has a talent and uses only half of it he has partly failed. If he has a talent and learns somehow to use the whole of it, he has gloriously succeeded, and won a satisfaction and a triumph that few men ever know. John is such a person. The Class of 1980 salutes a fine, talented classmate. Hood 138 To those of you who read our yearbook: We, the editors of the 1980 TOOT, would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all those people who have helped us with the yearbook. Putting together a yearbook is easier said than done. But because of people like Nick and Glenn Guy, Wes Johnson, our staff and especially our advisors; Miss Dixon, Miss Martin and Mrs. Wright, our job was a little bit easier. Together we have learned. But we've learned more than just about lay-out mats, copy and scaleography. We learned about responsibility and compromising. But most importantly we learned that if we worked together we could solve the problems and overcome the obstacles. The 1980 TOOT is proof of this. 1980 TOOT Editors, 139 c e Cfesten sy a cfifJcenty out fo warmer Quy ( d Jrdjo i fiy aygr yeafiyf io ie i_ ifa tod5 fy(? v . tfofataffie tfdfc'ng ofi aJfar yfet fie qoVeJ fe i -{( 5 7e V fie Je o ip 'Wtifo fife ivfo_you're oPer csf dpfeaoe fifflL ■fa praises cfiporiec ay lafie uf fo fireatqp rffo fiejeaxrp fieyyo Youfoa ifi 'r mfi Sfa fir ftoifaeSportefi40 up W owtL Ofi're cayfire o i a carot efi otf fii{e Tfte canfi reform we C8 {_ o fiy teofi 3e{fi to fere we cape Pnfi $0 YoUnfi aP Ycafo arJ VoanS fifia C rcfijgrue. 5yn y5J ic yrfee ty weft y te (ozo ?e(5 PunyiS C riofieefe firouypfie ] Cfr ye y f yo rfeetjctsf Jo 5610-fie t tvte 610 rfew rf jft ify 9 lJm0 fit Soy s fix rfy Jiouyy fo s?8 6 fare 05 d fa (Y yra zPeur cwtfn Sw yfa r'fi fie lei efiea qp qaatc Setter Sreanp y 'VA r y t i Z s  .
