TOOT '76 CANASTOTA JR. SR. HIGH SCHOOL CANASTOTA, NEW YORK CONTENTS SENIORS 6 TEACHERS 68 UNDERCLASSMEN 82 SPORTS 94 ACTIVITIES 120 ADVERTISEMENTS 142 4 Our four years of high school have been filled with many struggles and achievements. In the midst of all the confusion, there has been one person who has struggled along with us. She has laughed with us, cried with us, worked with us, and screamed at us. She has also taught us, because that was her job. But she did more than her job. Along with giving us her mind’s contents, she gave us her heart. To the Class of 1976, that has meant more than anything that could be taught from a book. She has willingly entwined her life with ours and has lead us through four years of “blood, sweat, and tears.” Dur- ing this time she has had a genuine concern for each one of us. She presented us with challenges and in the event of small failures, with a “Pat” on the back, gave us courage to go on. She was always fair and never turned anyone away who was eager to learn. She was always there and willing to help when we needed her. During the past four years our love has grown and grown for this woman and we, the Class of 1976, wish, with all our love, to dedicate our yearbook to her. Thank you, Miss Dixon, for caring so very much!! Good morning yesterday. Yon wake up and lime has slipped away. And suddenly it’s hard to find. The memories you’ve left behind. Remember? Do you remember? The laughter and the tears, The shadows of misty yesteryears. The good times and the bad you’ve seen. And all the others in between. Remember? Do you remember? The times of your life. Reach out for the joy and the sorrow. Rut them away in your arms. For memories arc times that we borrow. To spend when we gel to tomorrow. Here conies the setting sun. The seasons are passing one by one. So gather moments while you may. Collect the dreams you dream today. Remember? Do you remember? The times of your life. SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Thomas Mitchell 70 ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Mr. William Sullivan DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION Mr. Harold Bell 7| To the Class of 1976: To The Class of ’76 This is a memorable day in your lives as you complete your High School days at Canastota. All of you can revel in the satisfaction that you have met your educational goals to graduate here today. This day will have some special significance to you all, in that you are Canastota’s Bi-Centennial Class and a product of 200 years of hard earned democracy and freedom. Whether our forefathers, in their planning, could have expect- ed the world you now know, I seriously doubt; but through the hard work and very creative graduates of the past you have participated in the fruits of their labors. To you as you leave and to your loved ones, 1 leave this thought and challenge. The future graduating classes and their benefits shall depend on the fruits of your labors and successes. We hope you are ready for the challenge and will share your talents with the world in which you now enter. Joseph W. Braun Ass’t High School Principal This is an important occasion for all of us. The serious- ness of graduating comes only once to each class as part of their high school experience. One of the purposes of a year- book is to record and recognize all those who have come to- gether to share the occasion of graduation. We use it to bid farewell to classmates, teachers and all others who have as- sisted in the culmination of this moment. Over the years, I have enjoyed so very much, the class wills, the prophecies and poems. The moments of joy and sorrow that are some- times included in the yearbook always bring back memories of individual trials or of group activity and inactivity. A milestone in life has been reached and it is recorded for pos- terity. I wish you to know, that the last four years have been only an exploration, a wide sampling of the things that were good and were essential for your wider vision, your higher hope. It has been a good four years and I am distressed that it has gone so fast. 1 wish to impart my belief in your in- dividualism, your passion for freedom, your clear concept of what you want in life and to tell you it has been a pleasure to know you, and I wish only the very best for each of you in the years to come. 72 GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Mr. Lloyd Cooke, Mrs. Mary Ellen Kime, Mr. Vincent Albanese, Mr. John Dimao. In the three games in which they were defeated, they were outscored by a total of only five points. This was the second season for Coach Jim Shreve, and with a few breaks at the right times he could have had his first per- fect season. Coach Shreve and the Raid- ers will be starting the 1976 season with a 12-4 over all record for the two years that he has been here. We would like to congratulate this year’s team for giving it all that they had and for keeping the spirit of football alive at C.H.S. We hope that next year’s team will continue to play fine football and we wish them the best of luck. VARSITY FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Cross Countty—Fall ’75 With one of the better turnouts in re- cent years, this young squad overcame in- experience and showed alot of potential. The Junior High Team highlighted their season with victories over Oneida and Baldwinsville at the Chittenangp Onvita- tional. They finished second in the league in dual meets and at the League Meet. The Varsity Team, Manned mostly by un- derclassmen, came on strong with late season victories and a strong showing at the League Meet. 98 Row 1: J. Boffardi, M. Matina, Coach King, C. Tomatore, M. Warden, T. DuVaul. V' FIELD HOCKEY The 1975 Field Hockey season was a very good one for the Raiders, coached by Marcia Laidlaw. They finished with a 5-1-1 league record. They finished in a tie for second place with Chittenango, a half-game behind Oneida for first place. The Oneida game was the de- termining game. If the Raiders would have won, they would have taken the league. The team qualified, for the first time, to compete in sectionals. The Raiders beat Clin- ton (third seeded), but lost to Class A Auburn (top seeded) by the score of 2-1 (the first score on them in 32 games). Auburm later went on to take sectionals for the third time. The Raiders finished with the most number of goals scored in the league and possessed the three top scorers in the league: Joanne Creta- ro, Karen Cotsovites, and Lise Barley. There was a large turnout this year and many of the younger players got valuable ex- perience for future years. The teams record was not as successful as was hoped for, but the girls all played well as they lost most of their matches by only one point. aco. 99 VARSITY SOCCER Row 1: J. Burke, G. Lauretti, F. FOOTBALL Soccer was started three years ago at Canastota as an intramural program, but this year was considered anextra- mural program in which the team played six games with three other Tri-Valley league teams. For most of the sen- iors; Bill Mueller, Tom Lovi- za, Bunky Kentner, Jim Stokes, Lyndon Myers, Marty Knox, Tony Palamara, Mark Tornatore, Dennis Burgman and Chris k Findlay, this was their first year of soccer. Al- though their record was 1-3- 2, interest in soccer is in- creasing at Canastota, and the seniors did play excellent soccer toward the end of the season. The Highlight of the season was the victory over Chittenango. The prospect for continuing soccer at Can- astota is gool. We’ve got sev- eral underclassman to start with next year and plenty of new prospects. Row 1: D. Williams, M. Sgarlata, M. Grago, L. Farrar, T. Riley, J. Rapasadi, B. Warden, J. Duffy, Row 2: R. There were 12 players on the team from last year’s junior varsity. As the season progressed the team improved greatly and were always an exciting team to watch. The Raiders, led by co- captains Larry Cesario and Jeff Blessing, displayed tremendous desire and hustle. John Aquino led the team in scoring with 256 points and finished eleventh in the league in scoring, even though he missed two ball games. Jeff Blessing was the team’s leading re- bounder. The outlook for next year is bright because of the return of seven experienced players; Larry DiGeorge, John Aquino, Sam Cesario, Paul Farfaglia, Pete Todora, Jim Coleman and David Hartley. The Seniors, Ron Arnold, Jeff Blessing, Larry Cesario, Chris Findlay, Vin Salamone and Mike Vaccaro will be missed next year. — RRNCILO RDLIIND FRRFRGLIR FINDLRY 5 CESRRID COLEMRN TODDRR HRRTLY DIGEDRGE VRCCRRD PIO BLESSING SRLRMONE VARSITY WRESTLING Row 1: M. The Canastota Varsity Wrestling team had one of their better seasons this year. They lost therr first match to North Syracuse by a very close margin and then went on to win their next nine matches. They ended their season with a record of 12 wins and 4 losses. The highlight of the season was winning the Tri-Valley league for the second straight year. Their tournament record was not as good as they would have liked, but they did man- age a 2nd place finish in the 16 team Tri-Val- ley Invitational. Graduating seniors include Lyndon Myers, Tom Bonaventura, Gregg Brown, Mat Le- Blanc, and Ed Kennedy. These boys will be very difficult to replace as they all were excel- lent wrestlers. GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL Girls Basketball 1975-76 The varsity squad coached by Elizabeth Sny- der was made up of 6 seniors and 4 juniors. Even though the season was not as successful as anticipated (2-5 league and 2-11 overall) there was some fine individual performances. Top scorers were: Lise Barley with 101 league points and 164 points overall, and Tina Hall with 63 league points and 100 points overall. This year the varsity team was invited to a Christmas tournament at Morrisville-eaton Cen- tral School and Lise Barley was selected to the All Star Team. The junior varsity squad was made up of 7 sophmores and 3 freshman. The J. V. squad had a very successful year with a 4- 3 league record and 7-3 overall record. Top scorers were: Edie O’Hara with 72 league points and 110 points overall and Valli Morgan with 56 league points and 78 points overall. INDOOR TRACK This years Indoor Track was a small but enthus- iastic squad and they were led by the outstanding individual performances of David Williams, Lise Barley, Mark Warden and Bill Relyea. Though young and inexperienced, this hardworking team showed that they can provide the nucleus required for future seasons. Girls Varsity Basketball: Row 1: B. Emmi, T. Hall, M. A young and inexperienced J.V. squad has amazed many doubters by producing the finest J.V. team in CHS history. With valu- able game experience, this group should be contenders again next year and will contin- ue the winning tradition. This year’s squad consisted of one Senior, two Juniors, Two Sophomores and six Freshmen, with the only experienced players back from thcf first place team of last year being Lori Burke and Carol Lomonaco. The varsity are defending Tri-Valley League champs and Section III Class C-D-E winners, the only sectional winner in CHS history. This season’s squad of 8 seniors is again repeating their performance of last year with qualifying for sectionals and hav- ing a good chance at repeating as league champs. The success of this group has de- veloped the strongest girls sport at CHS in many years and one that has created pride and interest among the entire student body, faculty and community. BOYS BOWLING The 1975-76 bowling team finished the season with a 3 and 7 record. Since this year’s team was relatively young (only 3 seniors), we are looking for a much improved record next year. At the Tri-Valley Tournament, the doubles team of Charles DeFazio and Fred Meyers topped the field and won first place. Charles DeFazio also distinguished himself by bowling a 607 series at the Section III tournament. This score qualified him to compete in the State tournament that was held at White Plains, New York. GIRLS BOWLING The Canastota Girl’s Bowling team finished their season with a 5-5 record. This is only the second year they have competed in interscholastic competition. They placed third in the league. Since 24 girls turned out this year, we were able to start a JV team. At the Tri-Valley League Tournament, Canastota took first place in the singles and doubles competition. Bonnie Boston took singles with scores of 179, 180, and 153. The doubles team of Debbie Wagner and Charlene Leibowitz took the honors with a score of 966. The team improved greatly and we are looking forward to a better season next year. Rowl: C. Liebowitz, N.
