This year I wish to vary the procedure just a little and offer a collection of famous quotations and sayings with the hope that you may remember just one of them some- time in the years to come. Dayton E. Murray The thing that impresses me most about America is the way the Parents obey their children. The Duke of Windsor Above is a man who deprives you of solitude with- out providing you with company. MR. MURRAY Angnymgug You cannot do a kindness to some because you never know how soon it will be too late. Emerson The greatest undeveloped territory in the world lies under your hat. Anonymous Jails and Prisons are the Complement of Schoolsg so many Less as you have of the Latter, so many More must you have of the Former. Horace Mann The man who is waiting for something to turn up might start with his shirt sleeves. Bob Zuppke When you're through changing, you're through. Bruce Barton If you will just learn to do one useful thing better than anybody else, you will never be out of a job. President Lowell of Harvard Tact is the ability to describe others as they see themselves. Abraham Lincoln There are two kinds of men who never amount to very much, ---those who cannot do what they are told, ---and those who can do nothing else. Churchill Many of us spend half our time wishing for things we could have if we didn't spend half our time ------------ wishing. Alexander Woollcott Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and the desires of little children, to remember the weakness and loveliness of people who are growing old, to stop asking yourself whether you love them enough: to bear in mind the things that other people have to bear on their hearts, to trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke, and to carry it in front so that your shadow will fall behind you, to make a grave for your ugly thoughts and a garden for your kindly feelings, with the gate wide open--- these even for a day? Then you are worthy of a place in this world. Henry V'anDyke Z . Dedication We, the Seniors of 1951, wish to dedicate this edition of the CHIEFTAIN to Mr. Barocco, Mr. Rae, and Mr. Pratt for their guidance, generosity and inspiration throughout our school years 3 -1 L' 1 .E ,x giiif ' 1- D J K ME eb X3 'P.? Will We, the Senior Class of 1951, of Canaseraga Central School, town of Burns, the county of Allegany, and the state of New York, being of sound mind and memory, do declare this to be our last will and testament in manner and following, that is to say: First to our Principal, Dayton E. Murray, goes the largest part of our estate in the form of deep and sincere appreciation and gratitude for the guidance he has given us through those trying years. Second to our Senior Advisor, Mr. Romolo Barocco, we extend our thanks and appreciation for his friendship and guidance this past year. Third to our teachers, both in the grades and in high school, we leave our thanks for their untiring efforts to give us a firm foundation for our education. We would like to close this document with a few personal gifts to friends so: Janet Livergood leaves her position as the Belle of Birdsall to Alberta Gelser. Janet Jackson wills her ability to skip gym without being caught to Hope Harvey. Leona Austin leaves her ability to argue to the quiet Pearl Doud. Venitha Thompson leaves her dignified and grown up manner to Errol Kiley. Reva Butler leaves her beautiful dark eyes to Dolores Jacobs. Lilian Shute leaves her well liked dry sense of humor to Merie Gavitt. Charles Wilkins leaves his position as Romeo of the high school to Bill White. James Newville leaves his permanent bass voice to Bob Murray. Fay Bennett leaves his ability to wreck cars to Gerald Glover. Clayton Kenyon leaves his loudness to Bob Stratton. Grant Case leaves his lankiness to Dickie Fritz. Milton Harvey leaves his wavy hair to Dick Dresser. Eugene Gregorius leaves his marvelous build to Jerry Purdy. Matt Leach leaves his ability to get out of class to anybody that needs it. Lois Ann Kiley leaves her heart to anyone interested. Doris Mann leaves a bushel of the drugstore's peanuts to Bud King. Audrey Saxton leaves her position as President of the band and her best wishes for his success to Lyn. Elinor LaMonte leaves her ability for deviltry to Norma Kurtz. In witness thereof, we the Senior Class of 1951, do subscribe our names this 28th day of February, 1951. The testators names above who subscribed their names to this sheet of paper in the presence of us herein declare this to be their last will and testament and request us to sign our names and witness to the execution thereof which we hereby do in the presence of the testators on the date of the said will. Witnesses: Audrey Saxton Class of 1951 ' Elinor LaMonte 18 Class Prophecy It has been ten long years since I've heard from any of my classmates, but I've wondered what happened to all of them when graduation was over. The front pages of the Pow Wow are screaming with the accomplishments of the Seniors of '51. Congratulations are now in order for all of you. It has now been successful years since we have been away from the Old Alma Mater. We hope the road each of you has chosen has been as suc- cessful as ours. As I glance over the columns of the Pow Wow, I notice by the headlines that Charlie Wilkins has been doing research work on the latest developments in atomic energy in Oak Ridge. I-le has now returned to Burns and set up his Lab. He recently hired Lillian Shute as his private secretary and it is said that a slight romance is in the making. Under the society column I notice the former Doris Mann has made a hit in her latest stage play, Al1 Is Fair In Love And War. She is returning to I-Iornell where her husband, Gene Norton is at- tending the Ford Motor, Inc. Also in this column appears a familiar name. Mrs. Colin Carney, known better as Leona Austin, appears to be having a luxurious time for herself in the Hawaiian Islands. It is said that they own a large manufacturing company and produce grass skirts which she models in her spare time. Under What's New Next, my eyes rest on the name of two well known men. Milt Harvey and Bill Pierce, who purchased an estate in the Metropolis of Swains and are constantly experimenting with new and faster methods of pasteurization. It is said and I quote. They are the richest men in that district. f They wouldn't have to be very rich, would they? Q Fa-y Bennett is one of those who has remained in the vicinity of Dody's Corners. Audrey Saxton sold her estate to him and he has gone into the business oi raising his special new ever grown Bennett potatoes. . Audrey has been touring the country as the wife of Lieutenant E. J. Swain and on the side line accompanies for the famous Dixie and Jazz Band. Fay cou1dn't let the Saxton estate run down so he rented it to the Bob Fogles, the former Reva Butler. Reva now carries on the duties of an everyday housewife and entertains frequently. Tinker Gregorious started out as assistant cashier for the Canaseraga State Bank, but was re- cently promoted to the Treasury of the U. S. Government. Janet Livergood is married and resides in Elm Valley. She is trying out the techniques of motherhood, raising little Danny to be as successful as his parents. It has been written that Venitha Thompson is living in the bustling suburbs of Birdsall and working industriously at her paintings. Her newest project is designing her own home. Matt Leach is now preparing his sermon for Baccalaureate Services being held for the class of '61, In his spare time he corresponds with the Lonely Hearts' Club. James Newvillehas completed his term of Mayor of Swainsville and is now planning to run for president. Doris Wilson and Janet Jackson have been serving our country faithfully for the last ten years. They both now have obtained their discharges. Janet has become a model and Doris has gone into acting. As I gaze over the pages of the latest hits in movies in the columns of the Pow Wow, I see Grant Case as the featured cowboy and co-starring Doris Wilson in Casey Rides Again. The movie is being previewed in the Lux.Theater in Garwoods. ln the Chatter Box I noticed that Elinor LaMonte and Lois Ann Kiley are now traveling the globe after they both have finished their vocation. Elinor is superintendent of the famous Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Lois Ann is the private beautician of the victorious Gorgeous George. They are planning to return to their prospective jobs if they don't find their one and only. As l glance down the column I see mention of the recent marriage of Clayton Kenyon to Judy Canova. Ace was home on leave from the Air Force when the ceremony took place and they left for their two weeks honeymoon on Paradise Island. Thus the pages end: They who walked the halls of C. C.S. have proceeded far toward the goal of success. Witnesses: Venitha Thompson Lois Ann Kiley William Pierce 19 Senior Snaps SDN Z0 gf Rf 3 ' Y .V .SI X QL, Jziv' 5?-2? .MJD Vw. Last year's programs and concerts were greeted with much enthusiasm and hopes were high for the coming year. PRESENT: At last some of those hopes have been fulfilled. After two months of extensive rehearsals the band presented its first uniform concert in November. Both the Band and the uniforms were greeted with enthusiastic and well earned applause. Our trip to Bath Veterans' Hospital was very much appreciated by those veterans and they extend a hearty invitation for a return engagement. Our County Festival, which was held in Fillmore, and our own Spring Concert, proved very successful. We have not yet decided whether or not we will attend the State Festival. FUTURE: Again it will be the future which will be important. We will strive to go forward to even greater accomplishments. 31, IST ROW: ZND ROW: 3RD ROW: 4TH ROW: . Although there have been few Library Council meetings this year, our members working individually and in small groups, have done many things to keep our library running smoothly.. Desk attendants for the year have been Milton Harvey, Clayton Kenyon, Jackie Jackson, Jim Newville, Roland Mann, Phyllis Gavitt and Johnny Bacon. Typing and filing catalog cards has been the pet problem for some members while others have worked with the grade library classes. Junior Council members have straightened shelves, prepared new books and mended books. Thanks to Roger Perkins and Bill Kiley we have had several attractive bulletin boards and exhibits. Each member has contributed to making our library a pleasant, well organized part of our school. 37 F. F. A. lST ROW: Left to Right: D. Stephens, P. Gavitt, N. Kurtz, A. Gregorius. It was primarily a lack of height which prevented the team from having a better record, as the opposing teams had a definite edge in that department in almost every game. This year's team was all new except for four 'of last year's members. The highest scorer in a game was Charlie Wilkins with 17 points. Jim Luce and Ralph Fenton had the over all season's record with 63 points each. Overflow crowds were the rule for the home town games. l Junior Varsity Left to Right: W. VanDyke, K. Hanchett, A. The Junior Varsity started with a group of inexperienced boys who were willing to work and play steady ball. The team kept polishing their game and finally ended the season with 1 . 500 average and lot more experience than when they had started. Much credit goes to Coach Churchill for training this group of boys and bringing them through the season. 42 :wifi Cafeteria IST ROW: Left to Right: V. Thompson, J. Livergood, D. Livergood.
