FIT THE cH1.EF'rA1N W July 7, 1954 Dear Mrs. Aber: Do you recall those lines of Longfellow in Evangeline in which he says: Let me essay, O Muse! to follow the wander- er's footsteps- Not through each devious path, each change- ful year of existenceg But as a traveler follows a strea1nlet's course thru the valley. Far from its margin at times, and seeing the gleam of its water Here and there, in some open space, and at intervals only. When I received your letter asking our whereabouts, I thought How true those words are of the class of 1947 of the Canaseraga Cen- tral School. On that evening of graduation it seemed as if our paths could never take us far away from each other but here we are, far apart, each in his separate sphere, seeing each other maybe once in a, five year period. Only a few have remained in the vicinity of Canaseraga. You probably know that Milton Hubbard purchased a 950 acre ranch in the hills of Gas Springs and has gone into business raising his new specialty Milton Squash . Phil Karr is president of the Atlee Flying Club at Dansville's New Municipal Airport. I hear he has just bought a new helicopter and does a little flying himself on the side. fThis is one sure way of staying out of ditcheslllj Vera Sommers has long since moved from her edifice on Slater Creek Drive and is now Head Dietician at Sonyea. Judging from the old proverb the way'-to a. man's heart is thru his stomach -she will have the opportunity to turn down many marriage proposals. Roberta Wentworth is private secretary to Cecile B. De Mille's branch studio in N. Y. C. and has an elaborate apartment on Fifth ave. She usually plans to spend at least one week of her annual vacation back in Canaseraga with her mother and sisters. Last year just as she was taxying to the La Guardia Airport to take this trip, her eyes were attracted to a large Neon sign which read Held over for 26th iinal weekw-Duane Broughton in 'Pass the Potatoes, Mable co stars-Margaret O, Reley, Peggy Ann Dempsey, and Peter Jenkins. It was this sign that gave her the inspiration to invite us all' to her apartment for a week- end reunion before Duane was to leave for Paris--his next stop. I'm sure you will be interestel to hear about all of us who attended this party. Milton was the first of us to arrive. He was weighted down by a bundle of his specialty, Milton Squash which was served at our din- ner. . Vera and 'Phil were the next to arrii e. Vera breathlessly told us about her trip down with Phil in his new rotor-jet plane. She was in- terrupted by the arrival of Olaf Gates. He in- formed us that this was his first week-end of leisure since he purchased his large estate in the metropolis of Ossian. His dimpled, blond- haired wife and Olaf lst, Olaf 2nd, Olaf 3rd, and Cornelius 1st were left to care for the estate during his absence. Those of us who came from Canaseraga were complimented on our latest coiffure. We were very proud to give the credit to Jean Glover, operator of the Elite Shop--located on the cor- , 20 ner of North Church and Main Street in Cana.- seraga. Her business has grown to such an ex- tent that she now occupies the entire Kingston Block. As it was impossible for her to post- pone appointments, she was unable to attend the dinner engagement. Suddenly we heard a tuneless melody out in the hall and found the source of this noise to be none other than our old classmate, Vin- cent C. Phillips. His face beamed with its usual happy expression as hc told us of his work as an architect on. the new Ford Corp- oration. Hel invited us all to see his paintings exhibited at the Badame Art Gallery on Rocke- feller Plaza. The party was progressing famously, when who should arrive but Mrs. Rey Meacham, the former Jane Reynard.. No sooner had shel greet- ed us than she was proudly showing pictures of her two children, Ruthie and Keith playing on the porclu of their home in Trenton, J. Next she showed us a double page ad in a Life magazine of Travel Abroad by Air and we discovered that one of the steward- esses was none other than Ruth Mehlenbacher. We know she must be happy as her greatest love f?J was always flying. Roberta had in- formed her of our dinner but she couldn't come because her plane flew for Marseilles the preceding day. Can you imagine Ruth putting duty before pleasure? As soon as Harry Boylan, -better known as Butch , had arrived, he began giving us a sales talk on his most recent litter Ol WINS- During the next few hours, the conversation was monopolized with the latest methods of hunting and trapping. Butch now owns the Highland Canine Kennels near Groveland, N. Y. The next former classmate to arrive was Dr. Alenda Leach, now specializing as a Medical Technician at John Hopkin's Hospital in Bal- timore, Md. she apologized for being late but explained that it was unavoidable. She said she was whizzing down Fifth Avenue in her Tucker '54 when she heard the eerie screech of a siren. Very much surprised, she glanced out of the window to discover a tall, good- looking State-Trooper ascending from a squad car. Upon closer observation she discovered the trooper to be Vere Si-Casanova Coombs. He told her he was no longer called Si but was known to the boys as trooper 13.'l Be- cause of their previous friendship, he with- drew all charges and told her he would join her at the party later. These words had scarcely left hen lips when in walked our guest of honor himself-just the same Duane as of old, followed closely by Trooper 13-still in uniform. Ida Willitt wasl the' last of us to arrive be- cause of a business meeting with the Board of Directors of the N. Y. Telephone System at the Waldorf-Astoria. She said. it was com- pulsory that she attend this meeting as she is Chief Advisor to the President of this Board. I'm sure this letter has broken all rules of propriety as to length. Still, I couldn't close until I had finished my tale and told you about our entire class. We hope that you will recall us to mind oc- casiionly in the years to come as I know we will you.
