DHNSTON We, the Class of 1954, respectfully dedicate our yearbookto Mrs. Elva H. Johnston, vocal music instructor, and Miss Esther M. McKerr, English instructor. Our sentiments for these members of the Canandaigua Academy faculty are best expressed in the words of Confucius, who said: 'With the knowledge of the reasons for success in education and the causes of its failure, the superior man is then qualified to be a teacher. Therefore, in his teachings, the superior man guides his students but does not pull them along: he urges them to go forward and does not suppress themg he opens theway, but does not take them to the place. A teacher is one who tries to bring out the good and remedy the wealmesses of his students. Y J I,, Ng Dfw 1., nf ',, 'f. ' r m m m f 'xl 'xr Z'gf ' 'wr -0. I f Friendly, gentle MARION ETHEL WOLFANGER Band Concert Ticket Taker. I will not be grieved that other men do not know me: I will be grieved that I do not know other men. At fifteen, my mind was bent on learning. At thirty, I stood firm. At forty, I was free from delusions. At fifty, I understood the laws of Providence. At sixty, My ears were attentive to the truth. At seventy, I could follow the promptings of my heart without over- stepping the mean, I do not expound my teaching to any who are not eager to learn, I do not help out any one who is not anxious to explain himself, if, after being shown one corner of a subiect, a man cannot go on to discover the other three, I do not repeat the lesson. Wisdom, benevolence, and fortitude--these three are the uni- versal virtues. The means by which they are practised is another thing. Some are born with a knowledge of these duties, some know them by study, some gainthem as the result of painful experience. But the knowledge being possessed, it comes to one and the same thing. Some practise them with the ease of nature, some for the sake of their advantage, and some by dint of great effort. But when the work of them is done, it comes to one and the some thing. Yu, shall I tell you what true knowledge is? When you know, to know that you know, and when you do not know, to know that yor do not know--that is that is true knowledge. --Confucius .IL 5 f J. 9' j Q Q -Z U 1 45,1 ,S Ei R J' I fig, ,ggfhh if , Q92 1 UL 5 f 1-, -.14 lf! ,AA f - 11 'r . We bid farewell to our school, our faculty, and our fellow students. Some will go on to colleges and universities, some will seek business and industry, but each one will go forth into his chosen field with a happy and grateful heart. Together with all the experiences we have had and the learning we have acquired, may each of us remember, in looking forward, to be true to oneself, for this is the law of man. ln the words of Confucius, whose life and teachings inspired the theme for this i954 Aca- demian : He who learns to be his true self is one who finds out what is good and holds fast to it. , ln order to learn to be one's true self, it is necessary to obtain a wide and extensive knowledge of what has been said and done in the world, critically to inquire into it, carefully to ponder over it, clearly to sift it, and earnestly to carry it out. lt matters not what you learn, but when you once learn a thing, you must never give it up until you have mastered it. lt matters not what you inquireinto, but when you inquire into a thing, you must never give it up until you have thor- oughly understood it. It matters notwhat you try to think out , but when you once try to think out a thing you must never give it up until you have got what you want. It matters not what you try to sift out, but when you once try to sift out a thing, you must never give it up until you have sifted it out clearly and distinctly. .lt matters not what you try to carry out, but when you once try to carry outa thing you must never give it up until you have done it thoroughly and well. lf one other man succeed by one effort, you will use a hundred efforts. If another man succeed by ten efforts, you will use a thousand efforts. Let a man really proceed in this manner, and, though dull, he will surely 'become intelligent, though weak, he will surely become strong. 88 yvunooxs I MYERS ANDCO INC TOPEKA KANSAS
