SPEAKS Music LIBRARY Since the 1948 Pepenaus went to press, many incidents have occurred to in- fluence the progress of the Oley Speaks Music Library and Music Room project in our school. One of the very first incidents of note was the passing of our esteemed first citizen, Oley Speaks, on August 27, at his apartment, 5 Riverside Drive, New York City, at the age of 74 years. Oley had been ill for a number of years and his death was con- sidered merely a matter of time for many months previous to his decease. His body was brought to the local cemetery where it now lies interred. On September 9, a portion of the will of the late Oley Speaks was received at the local school, revealing that the Canal Winchester High School was named one of the several beneficiaries as follows: One Steinway grand piano and the oil painting of the portrait of Oley by the famous artist, Howard Chandler Christy. It was stipulated that the piano would be delivered when the music room was completed and that the por- trait would be in safe keeping in the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts until such time arrives for its transfer to the memorial room in the local high school. Events began a rapid march. Long-distance telephone calls from Margaret Speaks, Oley's celebrated niece of stage and radio fame, and a most ardent enthusiast of the Oley Speaks M'usic Library project, visits by Mrs. Ralph Drake, Columbus, Ohio, Margaret's cousin, representing the Speaks family interests, notices of the arrival of parcels, packages, telegrams, contributions of music, recordings, portraits appropriately autographed, souvenirs, letters, and mementoes from friends and relatives of the Speaks family . . . all of these and more, too, came to our office in such numbers and quantities that it was necessary to acquire a steel filing cabinet for the safe keeping of this precious collection which, after the sad events following August 27, had become quite sacred to all of us. Early in the month of October it became evident that local interest would be mani- fest in more ways than mere passing importance. In order to get started, the Board of Education named Dr. Bland L. Stradley to the chairmanship of the Building Committee, Mr. Howard Artz, Superintendent, A. B. Weiser, and Principal George C. Schultz to serve as members. Mrs. Ralph W. Drake represents the Speaks family on this Committee. Under the capable direction of Dr. Stradley, a series of conferences and meetings were scheduled at the high school and in the office of the architect where definite prog- ress has been made toward the actual construction of the proposed memorial to be housed in the South Building. Margaret Speaks, whose appearance with the Columbus Phil- harmonic Orchestra on Saturday, February 19, made it convenient for her to visit Central Ohio and Canal Winchester, in particular, met with the building committee and pre- sented many pertinent and valuable suggestions for the improvements of former build- ing plans from the artistic viewpoint. Mrs .Drake's suggestions, also, were valuable. With the assistance of the November School Bond Issue, and sizable gifts from the Speaks family, the exact amount of which will be revealed later, the Building Commit- tee hopes to complete the structure by a time early in the new school year.-George C. Schultz.
