1949 FRANKLIN COUNTY AND DISTRICT BASEBALL CHAMPIONS First Row: Mr. Black iCoachJ, Richard Wolfram, jim McIlwain, Wendell Shoe- maker, jack Foster. Second Row: Robert Hamilton, Robert Storts, Theodore Carpenter, Orville Wright, Richard Snyder, Dwight Smith. Third Row: Mitchell Kemmerling, Theodore Cherry, Roger Hanners, Paul More- hart, Robert Fowler, Jr., Robert Miller. This year Canal Winchester's Indians advanced further in competition than any baseball team in the history of the school. First, they took the south section of the County by defeating Grove City 5-0, Groveport 4-1, Reynoldsburg 5-2, and Hamilton Township 7-6. These victories earned them a berth in the District Tournament. They took the District by winning over Centerburg 22-5, Pickerington 4-1, and Columbus St. Marys 8-0. The Indians received their first baseball trophy of the '49 season by winning these games. In the regionals the Indians shut out Sugar Creek 4-0 and won the title by defeat- ing Cardington 12-3. The Indians dropped the semi-final game in the State Tournament to Taylor 5-1. Taylor then went on to win the State title. On june 4, Winchester won the County title by defeating Mifflin, winner of the north section of the County, 10-1 under the lights at Grove City. This was a no-hitter for pitcher Roger Hanners. This game wound up the high school athletic careers of five graduating seniors-Roger Hanners, Paul Morehart, Dick Wolfram, Dick Snyder, and Wendell Shoemaker. During the season the Indians had a won-lost record of 14-1. In addition to the games already mentioned, the Indians won over Grandview 9-6, Pick- erington 9-5, St. Charles 3-2, and Rosary 6-2 in non-league games.

fu' QI ROGER HANNERS We dedicate this page as a tribute to Roger Hanners, one of the most versatile athletes in Canal Winchester School history. Roger, throughout his four years of high school, was outstanding in all sports in which the Indians competed. He won fourteen letters in his sports' career. The only thing that kept Roge from winning sixteen letters was the fact that the Indians played football only during the preceding two years. During the past year, Roger was co-captain of the football team and the high scorer in Franklin County. He was captain of the basketball team which was undefeated in league competition, one of the leading scorers in the County, the only unanimous choice for the All'County team, and rated an honorable mention on the All-State team. Spring found Roger extremely active. He won individual honors at the Franklin County Track Meet as he placed first in the broad jump and the 100 and 220 yard dashes. In baseball, his favorite sport, he was on the All-County team and helped his teammates take the County championship, the District championship, and the Regional championship. During this time he pitched three shutouts and concluded his high school career by flinging a no-hitter against Mifflin to annex the County baseball crown for the Indians. .4406 W. vr,Nv. . -5.6 -1. sa, or +-4 'a .,4 .' 5 ,fy-6 f-, L1 JP A . .--1 ' ' , TQ.: X'
