One of the first official acts of the Student Council was to supervise the election of the homecoming queen who reigned at the Hamilton Township-Canal Winchester football game on November 5. The same procedure was followed when the basketball season came around. In addition to assisting with the many school-boosting activities, the Student Coun- cil furnished records for noon recreation, sponsored an assembly program for the high school, and planned for the last day of school an all-high picnic at the Zoo. A special function of the local Student Council is the auditing of the books of all school funds in December and May of each school year. All bills and school accounts must be approved by the Council and signed by the secretry. Seniors 1 tx Ji. ff' me-1 .Si CONSTANCE SHAEFFER ALSPAUGH Student Council 35 F. H. FRANKLIN HONOR SOCIETY The membership of the Franklin Honor Society is composed of junior and senior students who rank in the upper one-third of their respective classes. This is a county organization with representatives from all schools in Franklin County. The group meets twice a year for initiation of new members and a social get-together. TRI-HI-Y Our Tri-Hi-Y Club had sixteen members this year. We had on an average one meeting a month in which we would have a business meeting, refreshments, and a social hour. This year we also earned some money by making basketball lapel pins which we sold at the basketball games. Our officers for the year were Lola Simpson and joan Coleman, co-presidents, Patty Hart, secretary, Marilyn Benson, treasurer, and Donnajean Oyler, chaplain. Under the leadership of the president, Roger Hanners, the club enjoyed a good year. Early in October one of the largest groups of juniors ever to enter the club at one time was initiated. One of the outstanding services of the Hi-Y to the school was the sponsorship ,of monthly Ministers' Assemblies throughout the year. During Holy Week, the Club are ranged for daily asemblies by the local ministers. In january, the Hi-Y sponsored the local March of Dimes campaign and col- lected nearly S200 at The Wishing Well on the corner of Waterloo and High Streets. Delegates from the club attended county and district meetings at Columbus and at Zanesville. Richard Snyder was chairman of the Franklin County organization. ln February, the Tri-Hi-Y joined with the boys in a Cherry Pie a la Mode social affair. After the regular business meetings which were held separately, the boys and girls combined for an evening of recreation and refreshments. On March 16, Good Citizenship Day, Roger Hanners, jerry Hummel, and Charles Moore spent the day in Columbus, the guests of the County Commissioner, the,Prose- cutor, and the,Citizen Court Reporter, respectively. Two outstanding assemblies were brought to Canal Winchester through the efforts of the Hi-Y. One in October featured ceramic artists and the one in March was Sam Grathwell, noted F. B. I. speaker and entertainer. OYX' THE HI-Y BOOTH AT THE COMMUNITY FAIR FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Canal Winchester Chapter received an Award of Merit from the Ohio As- sociation of Future Homemakers of America for outstanding work in the local chapter. The chapter was also active at County, State, and National levels. Joan Coleman was president of the Franklin County F. H. A. Marjorie Smith was treasurer of the State Association and received the State Homemaker degree. She was also one of the three voting delegates from Ohio to the hrst national F. H. A. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA During the past year the F. F. A. Chapter entered many educational events and really had an active year. Five members of the Canal Winchester F. F. A. Chapter and their adviser attended the twentieth National Convention in Kansas City last fall. At this convention much was learned of the F. F. A. activities and the messages carried back to the local chapter made it much stronger. For ten consecutive years, the chapter has rated gold medal in Ohio. Richard Wolfram and Lloyd Solt were elected to the State Farmer degree thus making a total of thirty-eight State Farmers in the chapter. Gold medal ratings were won in the Chapter Procedure Contest. This is also the tenth consecutive year for this award. Seven teams participated in the State judging contest and all placed high in the State. The annual F. F. A.-F. H. A. Banquet and Community Fair were the largest ever in the history of the department. A special scrap drive was conducted last fall and earned over 3300. Special meetings were held on conservation, health, leadership, and safety. Second place in the state was won on the F. F. A. Education booth at the Ohio State Fair and over 3100 in other events. Three seniors took the Agricultural Scholarship examination. Six boys received special awards in excellence achieved in project accounting, pest hunt, ton litters, and other activities. The boys picked bushels of apples, purchased and sold hybrid seeds, and started a registered Duroc Jersey Gilt chain. Contributions amounting to about S30 were made to Community Chest, Red Cross, March of Dimes and State F. F. A. Camp. We sincerely feel that every activity participated in by the F. F. A. Chapter mem- bers has not only been educational, but interesting, and a help to all in becoming estab- lished in life. BAND After much practice and hard work, our newly-formed thirty-live piece marching band made its first appearance last fall at the Worthington football game. Our new uni- forms which had been purchased by the Mothers' Club came in time for us to strut at Reynoldsburg's homecoming. We had reason to strut, too, as we won the game 13-6. The maroon uniforms are trimmed in white with gold buttons and emblems. The four- ragere is white. ' We presented a Sunday afternoon concert for the public to show our appreciation for the new uniforms. We played for the home basketball games and also one night at the County tournament. A number of our group played with the All-County Band at the County Music Festival at Capital University in April. We gave a concert at the May Festival. We concluded our year's activities by playing the processional at the High School Commencement. At the Ohio Wesleyan Relays, Roger Hanners, Jim Mcllwain, and Junior Fowler won medals for taking second place in the broad jump. In the County meet, the Indians placed second with 36 points. Roger Hanners was high man and received a trophy for taking first places in the broad jump, the 100-yard dash, and the 220-yard dash. fu' QI ROGER HANNERS We dedicate this page as a tribute to Roger Hanners, one of the most versatile athletes in Canal Winchester School history. Roger, throughout his four years of high school, was outstanding in all sports in which the Indians competed. He won fourteen letters in his sports' career. The only thing that kept Roge from winning sixteen letters was the fact that the Indians played football only during the preceding two years. During the past year, Roger was co-captain of the football team and the high scorer in Franklin County. He was captain of the basketball team which was undefeated in league competition, one of the leading scorers in the County, the only unanimous choice for the All'County team, and rated an honorable mention on the All-State team. Spring found Roger extremely active. He won individual honors at the Franklin County Track Meet as he placed first in the broad jump and the 100 and 220 yard dashes. In baseball, his favorite sport, he was on the All-County team and helped his teammates take the County championship, the District championship, and the Regional championship. During this time he pitched three shutouts and concluded his high school career by flinging a no-hitter against Mifflin to annex the County baseball crown for the Indians. .4406 W. vr,Nv. . -5.6 -1. sa, or +-4 'a .,4 .' 5 ,fy-6 f-, L1 JP A . .--1 ' ' , TQ.: X' 1949 FRANKLIN COUNTY AND DISTRICT BASEBALL CHAMPIONS First Row: Mr. Black iCoachJ, Richard Wolfram, jim McIlwain, Wendell Shoe- maker, jack Foster. This year Canal Winchester's Indians advanced further in competition than any baseball team in the history of the school. First, they took the south section of the County by defeating Grove City 5-0, Groveport 4-1, Reynoldsburg 5-2, and Hamilton Township 7-6. These victories earned them a berth in the District Tournament. They took the District by winning over Centerburg 22-5, Pickerington 4-1, and Columbus St. Marys 8-0. The Indians received their first baseball trophy of the '49 season by winning these games. In the regionals the Indians shut out Sugar Creek 4-0 and won the title by defeat- ing Cardington 12-3. The Indians dropped the semi-final game in the State Tournament to Taylor 5-1. Taylor then went on to win the State title. On june 4, Winchester won the County title by defeating Mifflin, winner of the north section of the County, 10-1 under the lights at Grove City. This was a no-hitter for pitcher Roger Hanners. This game wound up the high school athletic careers of five graduating seniors-Roger Hanners, Paul Morehart, Dick Wolfram, Dick Snyder, and Wendell Shoemaker. During the season the Indians had a won-lost record of 14-1. In addition to the games already mentioned, the Indians won over Grandview 9-6, Pick- erington 9-5, St. Charles 3-2, and Rosary 6-2 in non-league games. SPEAKS Music LIBRARY Since the 1948 Pepenaus went to press, many incidents have occurred to in- fluence the progress of the Oley Speaks Music Library and Music Room project in our school. One of the very first incidents of note was the passing of our esteemed first citizen, Oley Speaks, on August 27, at his apartment, 5 Riverside Drive, New York City, at the age of 74 years. Oley had been ill for a number of years and his death was con- sidered merely a matter of time for many months previous to his decease. His body was brought to the local cemetery where it now lies interred. On September 9, a portion of the will of the late Oley Speaks was received at the local school, revealing that the Canal Winchester High School was named one of the several beneficiaries as follows: One Steinway grand piano and the oil painting of the portrait of Oley by the famous artist, Howard Chandler Christy. It was stipulated that the piano would be delivered when the music room was completed and that the por- trait would be in safe keeping in the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts until such time arrives for its transfer to the memorial room in the local high school. Events began a rapid march. Long-distance telephone calls from Margaret Speaks, Oley's celebrated niece of stage and radio fame, and a most ardent enthusiast of the Oley Speaks M'usic Library project, visits by Mrs. Ralph Drake, Columbus, Ohio, Margaret's cousin, representing the Speaks family interests, notices of the arrival of parcels, packages, telegrams, contributions of music, recordings, portraits appropriately autographed, souvenirs, letters, and mementoes from friends and relatives of the Speaks family . . . all of these and more, too, came to our office in such numbers and quantities that it was necessary to acquire a steel filing cabinet for the safe keeping of this precious collection which, after the sad events following August 27, had become quite sacred to all of us. Early in the month of October it became evident that local interest would be mani- fest in more ways than mere passing importance. In order to get started, the Board of Education named Dr. Bland L. Stradley to the chairmanship of the Building Committee, Mr. Howard Artz, Superintendent, A. B. Weiser, and Principal George C. Schultz to serve as members. Mrs. Ralph W. Drake represents the Speaks family on this Committee. Under the capable direction of Dr. Stradley, a series of conferences and meetings were scheduled at the high school and in the office of the architect where definite prog- ress has been made toward the actual construction of the proposed memorial to be housed in the South Building. Margaret Speaks, whose appearance with the Columbus Phil- harmonic Orchestra on Saturday, February 19, made it convenient for her to visit Central Ohio and Canal Winchester, in particular, met with the building committee and pre- sented many pertinent and valuable suggestions for the improvements of former build- ing plans from the artistic viewpoint. Mrs .Drake's suggestions, also, were valuable. With the assistance of the November School Bond Issue, and sizable gifts from the Speaks family, the exact amount of which will be revealed later, the Building Commit- tee hopes to complete the structure by a time early in the new school year.-George C. Schultz. Community Fair and Basketball Homecoming Queen JORETTA CARREL Queen joretta reigned two times this year. The Community Fair audience in October elected Joretta from candidates representing each of the four high school classes. In February, the high school student body selected joretra to reign at the Canal Winchester-Hilliards basketball game. Captain Roger Hanners crowned the Queen and Student Council President Dick Snyder presented her with a bouquet of American Beauty roses. After the coronation, which took place between the reserve and varsity games, the Queen and her court occupied seats of honor in the bleachers and watched the varsity game. QUEENS Football Homecoming Queen CONNIE SHAEFFER Rain marred the football homecoming activities. The between-game ceremonies were cancelled and Queen Connie, her court, and their escorts were introduced after the game to the crowd which gath- ered in the gym. Community Fair Queen and Court Betty Farley, Mistress of Ceremonies, presents Queen joretta Carrel with a bouquet of chrysanthes mums.
