Now, we, too, the Seniors of 1961, shall soon'accept our final bow. As the curtain begins to fall, this one last time, joy and sorrow blend into one: happiness, as we anticipate the won- ders yet to come: melancholy, as our thoughts return to the unforgettable years of laughteriand tears experienced in the classrooms and halls of C. Whether it is finance or new courses of study, transportation or getting the best possible teacher, the repair of a building or new text- books, the test always is, Wil1 this project develop each in- dividual to the fullest? These trustees of our schools are truly friends of all of us. A Board devoted to tireless service SUPER VI I PRI CIPAL MR. JOHN DEISSEROTH Last June I met a senior girl in the corridor and we discussed her graduation. Since then her words as we parted have been often in my mind. l love this school, she said. The construction of this addition to the East Hill School will mean that the seventh and eighth grades will study there instead of in the high school building. I know that as they build tradition and spirit there, they, too, will love their new school. They bring to us responsible leadershzpn PRI CIPAL MR. RALPH SCHULER The historian, H, G, Wells, once wrote that human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. Your Alma Mater has helped you to understand more clearly the challenges which face our demo- cratic way of life. It is my hope, now, that you may have the faith, the vision and the strength to accept these challenges, in order that this way of life, with all its blessings, may be secure for you and future generations of Americans. N tw' If 8 Qv 'X Larry Bishop Guy Baker Greg Lott L E L T wo years ago the Redskin football team was composed mainly of fresh- men and sophomores. Coach Brill was faced with the task of building another championship team. Many people have commented Coach Brill has been building character, but any member of the team will testify that building character has entailed, not only many skull sessions but long drilling and lots of hard work. The results of the combined efforts of Coach Brill and the members of the team can be seen in the successful 6 - 2 record established this season. that for the past 2 years L.G Q.B. CD LEAGUE CHAMPIONS The Redskins have again had another great year. Under Coach Shephardson's leadership the team won 17 straight games losing to Cobleskill by two points in the final game of the season. Key to the success of this year 's team can be said in two words, balanced attack. With Marv Van Leeuwen, Mike Pelligrini and Louie Larbell averaging 21.2, 16. 7 and 14. 9 points per game re- spectivelyg with Greg Lott and Denny Nestle doing fine jobs as play- makers and with strong, steady performances from Dick DeAngelis and Jeff Miller, the Black and Gold have been able to win consist- ently. The season was highlighted by 4 record breaking performances. Saturday, January '7th, at Schoharie Mike Pelligrini established a new school scoring record by scoring 36 points. The following week against Dolgeville Marv Van Leeuwen broke the short lived record by scoring 38 points. In addition Marv has broken the school record for total points scored while a varsity player by accumulating 1035 points. Closing out the season Canajoharie set a new team scoring record by scoring 106 points. With Lott, Larbell, and Nestle as a nucleus the 1961-62 team will be another powerhouse. V. league title with St. Johnsville. It has showed real signs of new talent that will help Coach Shephardson on the Varsity. Wetherbee, Chest, Horning, Van Leeuwen and Quackenbush have all displayed their desire and ability to play. As a team they have had a few bad breaks but still managed to build an impressive 12-4 record. The boys have gained experience and confidence under the coaching of Coach Pecora. They displayed hustle, ran hard and were always looking to steal the ball and start a fast break for a quick score. FIRST ROW: Hearn, Dievendorf. SECOND ROW: Tamsett, S Hage Vick ary, Terranova. In a Class E quarterfinal' pairing, which opened the eve- ning's activity, Lake George High of the Adirondack League breezed past Gllboa Central of the Schoharie County circuit, 60-40. By virtue of the triumph, the Jerry Shepardson-coached Canjos will meet Catskill High oi the Central Hudson Valley League in their semi-final test Friday night at Saratoga's Convention Hall. Lake George, the favorite in the E class, goes against Heatly High in its semi-final clash next Sat- urday night at Convention Hall. Slow Start Starting slow, the winning Canjos sped away from an early-game deadlock and as- sumed a 10-4 lead after the first eight minutes before un- loading with a 21-point second period. which earned them a comfortable 31-20 halftime lead, which was never serious- ly threatened in the second half. Rensselaer, sixth-place fin- isher in the Capital District League. stayed close ln the early going thanks to a fine performance by jumpillg-.ii1Ck John Rucker, who tallied nine of the losers' first 11 points and took command of the back- boards in the first two periods. Canajoharie then stepped up the pac a bit, cruising to a 45-32 margin after three peri- ods before finally coasting in with its 18th triumph in 19 overall outings. The setback for Rensselaer, which outscor- ed the winners, 23-22, in the final stanza, was its seventh in 18 overall starts. VanLeeuwen, a burly 6-3 senior, led the Canajoharie at- tack and snared game scoring honors with a 24-point burst, in addition to pulling off 16 rebounds. Mike Pellegrini fol- lowed VanLeeuwen and round- ed out the winner's twin-figure efforts with an 18-point burst. D ape , funffalm ie lub VW p Meet in ection wo lu s 'C'Fl1ul Indians Nip Catskill By BILL CONNVOLLY There's going to be a crackerjack of a basketball game next Friday night at Saratoga's Convention Hall, where the Sectional Class C championship will be de- cided in a game between surprising Draper High and Canajoharie Central, teams that scored wins in thrill- ing semifinal games last night at Saratoga. Draper outran and outshot a strong Cobleskill club, 84-77, while Canajoharie used accuracy Catskill High, '73-68. The final game next Friday will be at 9 p.m. after the Northville-Berne Knox Class D final. Action is the word that best describes the Draper-Cobleskill game last night, with both teams using the fast break and both shooting with uncanny ae- zuracy. Dick Kochem and Dick Ellis were the big guns in the Draper attack, Kochem iiring for 31 points, 10 from the foul line, and Ellis bombing the hoops for 25 points. Lloyd Mott was the driving force for the Red Devils and came away with top honors on 27 points. Two other Vikings hit for doubler figures, Tom Nastars and George Lawrence each net- ting 10 points. Mott's scoring for Cobleskill was abetted by Jim Lyon's 18 and Gene Grasso's 17 tallies. Close Play The game was close from the start as the teams traded basket for basket and closed out the first quarter with Cobles- kill ho-lding a 22-20 edge. Siz- zling, close play continued through the second quarter, with Ellis knotting the count at 43-all in the final second of the first half, There were four more tie scores during the third period, which ended with Cobleskill holding a slim 63-61 advantage. Kochem brought Draper up even, 67-67 early in the final stanza and Reohr gave the Vikings the lead, 69-67, at 1:58 of the quarter. The Red Devils crowded Draper but the Rot- terdam cagers pulled ahead gradually to come through with the victory. A lot of credit for the Vikings' final push goes to Kochem who came through with nine points in the final few minutes of play. First half of last hight's twin bill was also close all the way, with Cobleskill outscoring the Canjos, 54-50. from the field, from the foul line to beat but the Indians made their free ,hrows count and led in that department, 23-11, to sew up the victory. ' Early Lead Canajoharie held a 17-13 edge at the end of the first period, but the Cats spurted in the sec- ond eight minutes and left the floor at the intermission with a 37-33 lead. Catskill maintained its margin, but the tide had started to turn when 6-5 Tom Gentalen went out on fouls with 2:06 left in the third stanza. The Redskins narrowed the gap and trailed by one, 53-52. going into the final canto. Sparked by Mike Pellegrinl, the Canjos spurted to the front early in the final quarter and led 68-60 midway through the set. They stayed in front the rest of the way, although the Cats narrowed the margin to 70-66 at one point but couldn't catch up after losing Cal Lacy on fouls long before the end. Pellegrini and big fMarvin VanLeeuwen led the scoring parade for the Canajoharie club. Pellegrini netted 28 and Vanheeuwen 23 points. Greg Lott also had twin ngures for the Indians with 10. Lacy's 21 points and Keith Egnor's 19 were the only double digit ef- forts for Catskill. In the other game on the title card, the steady North- ville High cagers scored a well-dese1'ved 50-43 win over Berne-Knox Central to cap- ture the crown in Class D. Defending champion Canajoharie showed right from the start that it was going to be tough to beat as it raced to a 16-10 lead in the first three minutes. Sparked by the sparkling board work of 6-6 Marv Vanleeuwen, the Indians widened their margin to 28-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Mohawk Valley champs slowed their pace a bit in the second period and Draper started to catch UD, but Coach Jerry Shepard- son's Redmen were still in command, 48-40 at the in- termission. The rest between halves failed to help the VikinES and they were unable to cope with the fast break and towering height of the Canjos, who outscored Coach Doug Erickson's Vikings, 27- 16, in the third period to take a. 75-56 edge into the final eight minutes. Both teams scored high during the last stanza, with Cana.- joharie having a slight ad- vantage and missing the century mark by two points as the Indians won going away. Three Canajoharie cagers topped the 20 mark in scor- ing, with big Vanleeuwen leading the way with 29 points. Lew Larbell, a driv- ing demon despite a ban- daged head that covered 13 stitches in a wound suffered in an auto accident three weeks .8.g0. added 26 points. Mike Pellergrini rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Canjos with 25. The pop shooting of Dick Ellis kept Draper in the ball game as he scorched the nets for 12 field goals to to- tal 24 points. Three other Vikings netted twin figures as Tom Nastars contributed 18, John Olson 14 and George Lawrence 12. Marve dives in vain for a loose ball in the Draper finale at Saratoga Springs.
