Loaded down with books, pencils and pens, we bravely face the four years to come. Our first year consists mainly of getting accquainted with our classmates and adjusting our- selves to the many and varied school activities. Dear Diary, Sept- '42 The opening of our Sophomore year found us greatly reduced in number but not in spirit. We tried our skill at putting on a few dances, a bake sale and one successful hayride. VVith our minds Hlled with pleasant memories of our Sophomore year, We anxiously await our third year at Canajo- harie High School. Dear Diary, Sept- ,43 Upperclassmen ll Our social activities were given a successful incentive with an Armistice Day dance. Needless to say, the highlight of the year was receiving our class ringsg although some of them were conspicuously exchanged in a very short time . . . Then along came April and the majority of us donned our best bib and tucker to enjoy the music of UButch Robertshawls orchestra, playing at the annual junior Prom. Ah well - another year is gone and with those troublesome Regents behind us for awhile, wc plan ahead for our last year of High School. Dear Diary, Sept- 44 Our IT1OSt important year now looms before us, as We return to C. C. S. as f'The,' Seniors! A new dance committee was formed to plan our dances throughout the year. lVIany dances were held during the basketball season, the most successful being held after the Fort Plain game, en- joyed by both the victorious and the vanquished. A majority of the students were given an opportunity to show their talent in the Senior Play Growing Painsl' the success of which was so great that the public demanded a repeat performance. - On January eighth, we, the members of the Senior Class, tried our luck at making cookies, cakes, and candy, the result of which was a very successful bake sale. 'fTempus Fugit and it certainly did for before we knew it, Commencement week was here. After dragging ourselves through the Regents, we breathed a sigh of relief and enjoyed ourselves at Class Night and The Senior Ball. At last, that long-awaited night was here - GRADUATION! XVith the education and guidance we have received from our school and teachers, we were pre- pared to take our part in society and carve our own niches in the Hall of Fame. 8 Q I , 1 , . 9 Advisurs SENIOR OFFICERS Pwsilfcnz' jcrry Conboy lvifc' l'rvsia'4'nZ Phil Schuyler Ifwunlizzg S1't'I't'fllI'jf Cecile Sinclair Corr'1'.v,lm11l1'i11g S4'U'z'lz1ry Rosa Let iiiovanuone Truaszzrrfr XVilliz1m Schultz Nl 's. llrlrrltllj' Smith M1's. lVl:1rjorie Gear lmfl in riglll - XX7llllIlII1 Schultz, Cecile Siilclzlir, Jerry Cmllwoy, Rosa Lcc fil0VZlIlIl0IlC, Philip Schuyler. Lead them straight and true,' give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl bach our forces. Sueeess may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again ,' and we know that by Thy grace and by Thy righteous cause for which we struggle, our sons will triumph. For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They hght not for the lust of eonguest. They fght to end conquest. They jtllgllf to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and good will among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home. Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy humble servants, into Thy kingdom. And for us at home - fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers and sisters of brave men overseas, whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them -- help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice. With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arroganees. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a world peace - a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen. CThe latej Franklin D. Roosevelt June 6, 1944. If anyone has noticed the beaming lights around school and wondered what they were. here is the answer - they are the students who compose the membership of the Junior Class. You can recognize them by the gleam of the gold of their class rings and the energy with which they ac- complish any task they set out to perform. VVith seven members on the cheerleading teatn, five representatives on the varsity basketball team and ten participants on the varsity baseball team, the athletics division is actively maintained by these sportsmen of tomorrow. With three members, Bill VVest, Ally illancini and Art Crowe, constituting the vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively, of the Student Council, more evidence of the Work of the Junior Class is given. The two representatives of the class to the Cana- joharie Youth Center, chosen by popular election, were Barbara Athanas and Frank Shimer Jr. The class has also had the snack-bar concession at the Youth Center for a time. The most important event in any sluniorls high school year is, of course, the Junior Prom. Held on April 27, this year at Port Rensselaer, with the music of 'lButch'l Robertshavv and the King and Queenl' of the Junior class presiding, it was a great evening for everyone. Profits were also realized from three bake sales held at Christntan's Hardware Store and three dances held at the high school gym. Officers of the class are: President ...... .. 'lhe sophomore year is the second in the four important years of high school. Sophomores have had one year of experience, and in their second year, they are given the opportunity to prove their wiseness or foolishness. This yearls sophomore class has worked hard to gain the description of a 'fwisen class. NVelll let you be the judge whether they have succeeded or not. llliss Traver and llfliss Saltstnan were chosen at the beginning of the year as advisors for the class of '-l7. A very successful bake sale was held at Christman's Hardware Store in the winter. Those who did not contribute baked goods were asked to pay to the class treasury. The undertaking proved to be fun and very profitable. Three dances were scheduled during the term, one of which the class would like to forget as far as finances are concerned. However, soft drinks sold at the Frankfort game brought in more money for the class, and checking coats added still more. This spring, black C. C. S. banners with bright orange letters were seen flashing around the halls. The selling of these by the sophs, proved to be a very successful activity. They also sponiored the refreshment bar at the Youth Center during the month of April. Sandwiches which were made by various members of the class, gum, candy and potato chips that had been purchased were sold. This year's sophomores have reached the peak in their high school years, and they have left two suc- cessful years behind them. Oflicers of the class are: President ..... . Here are this yearls freshmenl Each year, as one class steps across the final threshold of high school into the larger World beyond, another class steps across the wide gulf that bridges the rise from junior High to Senior High School. These four last years are busy, full of work and fun, and contain the opportunity for a class and its individuals to exhibit their abilities and to develop new qualities in resourcefulness and leadership. This year's freshmen class has made a grand beginning by successfully carrying out its planned activities and maintaining a favorable balance in its treasury throughout the year. The ball was started rolling last fall by the election of oflicers, with Prof. Shaffer and llrs. Summerson chosen as advisors. A Very successful dance was held in the fall as the first main activity of the year. During the winter the Freshmen gained the concession of selling soft drinks and ice cream during the basket- ball games at school. This proved to be a very profitable undertaking for the class. The class members also decorated at the Youth Center a corner which contains a juke box and soft drink containers and where there is room for dancing. This was named Freshmen lnnv. lVIoney was taken in when the class had charge of the refreshment bar at the Youth Center during the month of lllarch. llleetings were very well attended this year. The class of l-l-8 has finished the first of four important years, with a promising future ahead. Officers of the class are: President ...... .... l lames Schuyler Vice President .. .. New play, new cast, new director, new hit! The Senior Class for weeks talked of nothing but the Senior Play - what would it be? VVho would Htry outn? XVho would succeed in getting the star roles? By November, all these questions were answered. The play chosen was Growing Painsi' written by Aurania Rouveral - famous for her creation of the Hardy family. Over half of the class tried outu for the several roles in the play, and after careful con- sideration, Bob Fox and Lois Fredericks were chosen to fill the leading roles of George and Terry Hlaclntyre. Of course, there were Professor and lllrs. lllaclntyre, the great scene between Dutch and Prudence, and the dance scene with George and Elsie, to mention but a few of the outstanding happenings and characters. You remember the rest of the cast who made this play so delightfully real. The parade through town in Georges Town Car with his friends, advertising signs, and musical accompaniment, popularized the play. It helped so much that it was performed for a second time the following week. f'Snoopy . baseball, mercurochrome, punch, high-heels, pseudo-glamour, young love, and a typical American family were the essence of Growing Pains. And for art and scenery, music, prompting, make-up, and direction, thanks to lVIrs. Lipowicz, lllr. Shafer, llflrs. Stoughton, Bliss Seavey, lyliss Pine, llliss Miles, lllrs. Summerson, Nlrs. If these averages are maintained during the complete tour years of high school the member remains in Honor Society during the four years without being re-instated each year. The new nzeiizbers, who are on probation tor one year. are inducted into the Honor Qociety in the spring. This is done in an assembly program during which the older members light candles which the new members hold in their hands. Tbfse candles are symbolic of the Lamp of Learn- ing , which is the emblem ot the Honor Society. Because the new members of 1943 were not in- ducted in the spring of 19-l-l, they were inducted in l9-l-5 along with the other probationary members. A very successful banquet was enjoyed by all of the menbers on Klarch 22 of this year. The entertainment and food committees. which were made up of the older members of the socfety, managed the technicalities of the preparations. 'lhgse banquets are an annual affair of the Honor Society. For the lirst time in its five years of existence, membership pins and engrayed membership cards wer: purchased by the society. Ur- iginally' organized to provide constructi'.'e recreation and social organization tor young girls. the society has accomplished much along these lines. By' developing the eharaeter ot each spiritually. morally, mentally, physically, altrn1st:eally', mdiyidnzilly, and socially, the K. IC. has also given meaning to the eight points of its star symbol. Ifach girl has derived many benefits from the socety and troin the association ot other girls in the society. l'rqmjeets undertaken and acfivitics shared hy each member are helping them to become betterindiyidnals. This year, K. lf.'s social events were limited due to wartitne restrictions. However, the fornial initiation banquet was held in the Spring ot this year and delegates were sent to Grand Lodge in Izlmira, New York tor the convention held during the week-end ot Xoveniber 25, lfl-l-l-. The girls also occupied themselves during the weeks before Christmas making rag dolls which sold very profit- ably. Other ventures accomplished during the year were a bake sale and a few dances, without which no busy year of the society is complete. As sisters now we meet, sisters new to greet ln K. How well do we know them? During the past school year some of the seventh, eighth and ninth grade students have come to know. through the Library Club, to appreciate more fully the work to be done in a library, the care and arrangement of books, and - despite the work - the fun to be had in 'fthe care and upbringing of a school library. VVorking at the desk, putting books back on the shelves, and doing a great nuir ber of varied jobs which need to be done in the average school library, they have thus been introduced into the possibilities of an interesting career. They have also worked in the Children's Library doing regular library routine work and helping with the story-telling hour. The big event of the year was a 'ALucky l3'l dance held on Friday the 13th in April. Under the supervision of Mrs. lVIarjorie Geer, the Library Club has enjoyed a year worth remembering. The Future Farmers of America is a non-profit, nonfpolitical, farm youth organization of voluntary membership, designed to take its place along with other clubs and activities striving for the development of leadership, the building of a more permanent agriculture, and the improvement of country life. It is an intraf curricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum - vocational agriculture. The primary aims of the Future Farmers of Aznerica are the development of agricultural leadership, co-operation, and citizenship. Through supervised farming, co-operative activities, com- munity service, and leadership activities, each member trains himself to become one of the best Future Farmers of America. One of the duties of the Building and Grounds Committee is to conduct noon hour dances on days when movies are not available. Dick Lowell, Dick Stander and Theron Billinger were selected to operate the motion picture projector at noon hours and to assist teachers during classes who do not know how to run the machine. Another duty is to have monitors stationed in the girls' and boys' room two minutes before each period ends to see that property is not damaged. These K.P.,s also help keep the school clean, which also includes keeping the grounds neat. One of the meetings was a particularly enjoyable one because it was held in picnic style. Barton Van NVie, Duane Behlen, and Bob Allen, will certainly be missed by the rest of the organization next year. Dolores Thompson, who took over when Evelyn VVilliams joined the Nurse Corps, is the accomplished pianist of the troupe. Tom Planck, Duane Galusha, Ronald Keller, Dick llliller Thomas lklowrc' and Donald Grant make up the rest of the group. They have played for several school dances and for Firemenls Dances. The repertoire of the Glee Club ranges from some of the oldest-known and delightful folk- songs of both the Old and New VVOrld to the soothing melody of VVhen Children Pray. It docs not represent an extensive field, but it is better to do one thing well than to do several fairly well. This, the aim of the Glee Club, has been attained successfully in the past, thanks to the guidance of Mrs. lwabel Stoughton and the co-operation of each member. Proof of the success of the Glee Club has been given at the annual spring biusic Festival, and also by the fact that members of the organization individually and as a group, have achieved honors at the state contest held each year. This year's representative to the state contest was Rosemary Ferraro, vocal soloist. During the rehearsals, which are held twice a week, thorough study and practice is given to each piece of music in order to sing each song as well as possible. This year the majority of the club is composed of new members, who though inexperienced are doing their best to maintain the standards which have been set by the Glee Club in former years. By encouragement and hard work they can do this, making Canajoharie even more proud and appreciative of this choral group. .'iIFi:. 'lihen you remember it's Klontlay and you know the C. C. S. Orchestra is in the midst of its bifweekly practicing. In spite of the graduation last year of such faithful members as Esther Giovannone, George Athanas, and Lewis Yeghte. hlrs. Hlabel Stoughton has turned out a grand instrumental group during this school term. The orchestra plans to enter the contest at llion again this year. At the performance of the Senior Play in November, the orchestra members willingly furnished the music as an introduction to, and during, the agts. This was greatly appreciated by the Seniors. The orchestra played for the Christmas operetta and participated in the annual music festival which took place in lylay. Of special significance to the orchestra rehearsals have been the visits of hlrs. Stoughtonls son, jeff, who has been a member of the United States Army Air Forces Band, playing in the European theater of War. 3-.gig . F .Lo 13:1-f:w , H-mi , -V -'ra 4.-'A 'f '1 -.
