I So if a man's wit be wandering, let him study mathe- matics . . . , Francis Bacon said-and he spoke wisdom. ln appreciation of the dictum, a balanced and wholly adequatc mathematics course is presented. The first principles of algebra begin the course: in sec- ond year the basic course is completed by a study of plane geometry. This base established. students continue at their own option, providing their regular studies do not suffer. Single semester courses in trigonometry. advanced algebra and solid geometry are available for mathematically inclined students in their last two years. These courses are designed to fill out the requirements for entrance into engineering col- leges which demand extra preliminary mathematics. O The Army labors mightily for years to keep itself fit for a national emergency. At Campion the R.O.T.C. works might- ily all year for an annual trial of fitness, the annual inspection and exhibition on Motheris day. This review is the test of classroom and drill Held instruction, the supreme moment in the military life at Campion. A strange drill and a strange textbook faced the Unit at the start of this year, and the changes necessitated by the results of the Army's experimentation with the new drill com- plicated the year's work considerably. Interest in the work has been fostered by platoon and company competition for honor awards of streamers and bars. Additional and even keener competition was introduced in the form of squad competition. Individual members of the Unit matched ability in contest for the Chicago Tribune lnedals.
