THE SEASON 0NE who had not followed the Knights in their weekly encounters on the gridiron, on scanning over the past season's record, would probably he somewhat skep- tical in passing l1is opinion on the Red and Black's football endeavors. Yet, to know the real prowess of Campion's '38 team, it is necessary to delve deeply beyond the statistics and figures, into the honest facts, which really constitute the essence of knowledge. The record, as it stands. is not of the type which would easily captivate the average sports enthusiasfs cy:-3 but still thc largest margin hy which the team cmerged on thc short end was by one touchdown and one extra point. In the victory column, however, the process was radically reversed, when on one occasion the foe was vanquished hy an overwhelming difference of 45 tallies. . . . The Red and Black stalwarts proved that they had the ability and man power to become a team of which Campion could he justly proud. From the outset they proceeded to rack up points until the final gun. It was at the hands of Aquinas that the Redmen were administered their first setback. Yeager, the Blue and Gold's triple threat star. literally raised havoc hoth offensively and defensively. It was due to his perfect pass late in the third period that the lone score was garnered. Beneath a gray and foreboding October sky, the Knights fought to a T-7 deadlock with St. John's of Milwaukee. Throughout, the tilt was a nip-and-tuck affair with each team displaying a well balanced assort- ment of running, passing, and kicking. Both goals were defended successfully until Mahoney intercepted a fiat pass in mid-field and streaked down the markers for the tally. The Milwaukee boys, however, showed good fighting spirit, when in the closing stanza they skirted Campion's end for the tying score. The Red Men proved to he the stronger team when they made De Paul of Chicago taste the bitterness of defeat hy the score of 7-6. The splendid and effective long distance booting of Howie Brundage more than once saved the day for the home aggregation. Campion took to the road to demonstrate to the cadets of Marmion its ability to score and also the . . . Fred Maurer picks up a few yards. .p5'A'g xp.: 'J'-ul 'Z I F, If 4315, '.'- , iki--, - . Small but powerful, they proved that they had the spirit to min no limiter how staggering the odds or the opposition. The Smallyarders' coach, Mr. R. M. Their relentless driving spirit, so cap- alrlv displayed in the St. .Iohn's encounter, centered around the alrility of Captain Ahern and Dick 0'Day. In their lnig game with the Ex-Midgets, the opposi- tion proved too powerful, and the Midgets llowed in dclcal-overwllelmed 40-0.
