Campbellsville The Campbellsville College Board of Trustees has approved a non-scholarship football program, according to Dr. W.R. avenport, president of the College. Plans for the football program include elding a team and playing a limited schedule in 1987. Campbellsville College will become a part of a newly proposed conference composed of schools through- out Kentucky, eastern lndiana and northern Tennessee. The presidents of all interested schools met March 28 to determine criteria of the conference and those schools participating in it. l'm thrilled, said Don Bishop, assist- ant professor of physical education and athletics and athletic director. This has caused adrenaline to flow and added new excitement at Campbellsville College. The new football team is the first one to play at the College since 1930 when football was discontinued because of the Great Depression, said Dr. Richard Sanders, a 1930 graduate from Campbells- ville. He played guard and end on the teams in the late '20s. Sanders said the game then was said the team members used a technique called a flying tackle, in which the players dove through the air to tackle a player. He said they didn't wear any shoulder pads and had helmets but didn't always wear them. The games were played on a field ehind the old gym and spectators stood to watch. Some of the opponents were Lebanon Junction, Sue Bennett College, t. Joseph Academy at Bardstown, the Kentucky School for the Deaf in Danville and Lindsey Wilson. The team didnit have enough to divide up in scrimmage, so the College's President Warren Jones got on the field with them. He could really hit hard, Sanders said. Dr. Burr Atkinson was one of the early oaches. He organized and promoted the teams in the early 1920s. Olivia Durham Tomes C265 said her brother, William Walker Wickie Durham, played with the early teams and was also one of the first coaches. He was a great football player and had lots of scholarship offers from different col- leges, she said. D fi maybe rougher than football today. He b S c College To Rei Gatton Kirtley C315 was quarterback and captain of some of the early teams. He said they played a very rugged game, with very little equipment. Football was discontinued in the fall of 1930 when President Wright came to the College. He was forced to make many budget cuts, Sanders said, due to the Depression, and football was one of the cuts. nstate Football When football resumes this fall, there will be lots of changes from the earlier teams at Campbellsville College and Russell Creek Academy. And one such change will be the team's name. The Campbellsville College Tigers used to be the Panthers. Another change will be that every member will have a helmet and will wear it at all games. And the flying tackle won't be used anymore. THE FlGH'l'lNG PANTHERS. FOOTBALL lS BEING reinstated at Campbellsville College with the first games to be played in the fall. These pictures are of one of the earlier football teams at Camp. bellsville College. These were taken sometime in the 1920s.
