V 6 in ara QQ' i l O P o -v 9+ ' ob .v fv Y if E ditor's Note Well, This ls lt! The 1987 Maple Trail is the third and final publication I will have the privilege to create. Some say the third time is CHARM! I'm not quite sure. Each book reflects a different time at Campbellsville College. These books show how the college changed and the personalities grew with these changes. I'm not sure if this book is better than 85 or 86 but as much, if not more hard work went into creating the 87 Maple Trail. I chose the theme - THIS IS IT! because I feel that it sums up the great college experience for the student body. This book will allow you to remember the year at Campbellsville in 1987, as a freshman or senior. Keep in mind -this is it - so have fun! GREAT THANKS TO PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE - Especially AYO OLANIYAN AND PAM HARDY GREAT THANKS TO MY ADVISOR - Karen Lynema To my friends, it's been real! Enjoy! The students earned 3 hrs. college credit for European Studies Class. Cynthia Williams, Annette Clark, Rhonda Allen and Monica Vaught met Mr. Himes in Louisville early that morning to leave for London, England. Some of the larger countries visited were: Holland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Spain. The high- lights of the trip included sites such as the Black Forest of Germany, the Coliseum in Rome, along with the Vatican City, the French Fliviera, a visit to Monte Carlo, the beautiful city of Madrid and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The trip was an exciting learning experience for all. This is an example of learning by doing, and these four college students, led by Mr. Himes walked through the ages of history in 31 days. Along with shows '1 'ami,,,,,-,A I X Dorm Personalization by Sarah Stafford During the 1986-87 school year, many dorm students improved their residence halls by participating in dorm personalization. Our goals were basically to get students on the floors to work together on a dorm project and to beautify the dorms by making them more bright and cheerful, commented Miss Sylvia Morris, Student Development Vice-President. I don't know when l've been more proud of our students. This was really beyond our expectations, she added. Winners in Stapp Hall were Two North and Three South, receiving first place and a pizza party at Mr. Gatti's. Second place went to One South, they were awarded with a free cheeseburger, fries, and drink from the college snack bar. Third place winners in the dorms were treated to cheeseburgers and drinks. All other participants received a free drink from the snack bar. Stapp Hall's Spirit Award went to Three North and Center. Two South was most creative, and Most Original was Two Center. South Hall's first prize went to One North. Three North was awarded second place, and three South received third place. Miss Morris hopes students have received a sense of accomplishment, of doing a good job on something for themselves by making their living quarters more attractive. r-fxfs U j l M. -Fm: . . f :X Ab: . .-pm wg If 24255 F4 AVL , y '. Campbellsville The Campbellsville College Board of Trustees has approved a non-scholarship football program, according to Dr. W.R. avenport, president of the College. Plans for the football program include elding a team and playing a limited schedule in 1987. Campbellsville College will become a part of a newly proposed conference composed of schools through- out Kentucky, eastern lndiana and northern Tennessee. The presidents of all interested schools met March 28 to determine criteria of the conference and those schools participating in it. l'm thrilled, said Don Bishop, assist- ant professor of physical education and athletics and athletic director. This has caused adrenaline to flow and added new excitement at Campbellsville College. The new football team is the first one to play at the College since 1930 when football was discontinued because of the Great Depression, said Dr. Richard Sanders, a 1930 graduate from Campbells- ville. He played guard and end on the teams in the late '20s. Sanders said the game then was said the team members used a technique called a flying tackle, in which the players dove through the air to tackle a player. He said they didn't wear any shoulder pads and had helmets but didn't always wear them. The games were played on a field ehind the old gym and spectators stood to watch. Some of the opponents were Lebanon Junction, Sue Bennett College, t. Joseph Academy at Bardstown, the Kentucky School for the Deaf in Danville and Lindsey Wilson. The team didnit have enough to divide up in scrimmage, so the College's President Warren Jones got on the field with them. He could really hit hard, Sanders said. Dr. Burr Atkinson was one of the early oaches. He organized and promoted the teams in the early 1920s. Olivia Durham Tomes C265 said her brother, William Walker Wickie Durham, played with the early teams and was also one of the first coaches. He was a great football player and had lots of scholarship offers from different col- leges, she said. D fi maybe rougher than football today. He b S c College To Rei Gatton Kirtley C315 was quarterback and captain of some of the early teams. He said they played a very rugged game, with very little equipment. Football was discontinued in the fall of 1930 when President Wright came to the College. He was forced to make many budget cuts, Sanders said, due to the Depression, and football was one of the cuts. nstate Football When football resumes this fall, there will be lots of changes from the earlier teams at Campbellsville College and Russell Creek Academy. And one such change will be the team's name. The Campbellsville College Tigers used to be the Panthers. Another change will be that every member will have a helmet and will wear it at all games. And the flying tackle won't be used anymore. THE FlGH'l'lNG PANTHERS. FOOTBALL lS BEING reinstated at Campbellsville College with the first games to be played in the fall. These pictures are of one of the earlier football teams at Camp. bellsville College. These were taken sometime in the 1920s. 5 Homecoming Queen Tegest Nega Miss Tegest Nega, a 22-year-old senior from Ethiopia was crowned 1987 Camp- bellsville Homecoming Queen. K Keenan Redbone Bridgewaters shoots a free throw. ,vfffzffd Sf Tiger Basketball Coach Lou Cunningham's 1986-87 Men's Basketball squad was a young one, sporting only one senior, Keenan Fledbone Bridgewaters. Bridgewaters was one of four returning starters joined by Bob Daley, Allen Bell, and Aubrey Fritz. Cunningham pulled in a good crop of freshmen including Todd Armes of Breckinridge County, Vernon Billups of Radcliff, Ky., Billy Grierson of Dayton, Ohio, Barry Stringer of Pulaski County and Fied Shirt, David Keiser. Other returning team members were Joe Bane, Mike Pollock, David Perkins, and David Langley. The team had a promising start with wins over Brescia and Alice Lloyd. Fiob Daley was the star against Brescia scoring 22 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Aubrey Fritz lead all scoring against Alice Lloyd with 20 points. A packed gym for homecoming was entertained by an exciting one point victory over a tough Transylvania team. Bridgewaters was the high scorer in that - game with 20 points, as well as being top I 4 rebounder with 12 rebounds. Next on the schedule for the Tigers was Division ll Kentucky Wesleyan. Wesleyan came out with a 102-61 home court win, but the Tigers came back quickly with an 80-66 victory over Centre. It was against Centre that Bridgewaters scored his season high 36 points. Daley worked the boards for ten rebounds. The Tiger squad then took to the road for games against Pikeville and Clinch Valley. The Tigers were defeated by an ',- Q outstanding Pikeville team led by Todd May, Q but came back with a 99-87 win over Clinch Valley. Fiedbone Bridgewaters took high honors with 27 and Daley led the boards with nine. a if Stiff-Lyla, Freshman Todd Armes skis for two. The remainder of December saw losses to Georgetown, Berea, and Brescia along with a 101-83 home court victory over Union in which Bridgewaters scored his season high 86 for the second time. Christmas break brought some changes for the Tiger squad. First, was the loss of the reserves Terry Copeland and David Langley. Another change was the addition of Freshman guard J. D. Hill transferring from W.K.lJ. While the rest of the Campbellsville students were still enjoying their break, the Tigers returned to playing basketball with on the road losses to Centre and Cumberland. Bridgewaters was leading scorer in both games with 25 and 21 points. Daley dominated the boards with 18 rebounds. The team not only lost the game against Cumberland, but also lost sophomore Aubrey Fritz for most of the remaining season due to a foot injury. The Tiger squad then suffered losses to Pikeville at home and Alice Lloyd away. Added to the defeats was the sus- pension of Freshman Billy Grierson, who had seen limited playing action during the season and had started for Cunningham a few games. Another fatal blow to the team was the loss of junior Bob Daley. Daley was leading the team in rebounds averaging seven per game and was sec- ond in scoring with 14 points per game. The team regrouped quickly and scored a moral victory with wins over Clinch Valley and neighboring Lindsey Wilson. The freshmen showed strength and Todd Arms scored 21 and Vernon Billups had 10 rebounds. They then lost four very close games to Berea, Union, Lindsey Wilson, and Transy, also fell to KIAC powerhouses Georgetown and Cumberland before en- tering tournament play. The Tigers hosted Clinch Valley in the first round game and won 94-71, but fell to the strong Cumberland 94-78. The Tigers ended with a record of 9-18 and a conference of 4-12. Tiger baseball started on March 3 with a double header against the University of Lou- isville. U of L won both games. The Tigers lost two more to Ky Wesleyan. On March 9th the Tigers found their first victories defeating Lind- sey-Wilson 19-3 and 11-1. The highlight for the players was their trip to Cocoa Beach, Florida, for Spring Break. The Tigers took victories from Mid-America, Illinois Benediction, and Rockford, and took losses from Malone, Rockford, Trevecca, Huntington, and Oklahoma Baptist. These games helped prepare the Tigers for conference games to come. The Tigers continued to battle to stay in the conference race. The Campbellsville Tigers faced Berea. If they would sweep the doubleheader they would take a 24-22-2 record and 13-3 conference re- cord into the District 32 tourney. They did, and earned the number one seed and hosted the tourney. Campbellsville claimed a first round forfeit from Union College, then fell to conference power Georgetown giving the Tigers their first loss in district play. The Tigers again faced a vengeful Union, and again handed the Union team their second loss. The Campbellsville Tigers would then face Georgetown for the championship. The Tigers in a disappointing loss fell short of the District Championship. Dave Decker, Sarge - Mike Pollock, and Brad Baber were named All-KIAC.
