1983 Maple Trail Volume 56 Campbellsville College Campbellsville, Kentucky Cathy Curry - editor Brenda Mowery - asst. editor Lois Roundhouse - asst. editor David Holland - asst. editor Dr. Robertt Doty - advisor We dedicate this yearbook to all who have ever taken a journey and to those who ever will. Registration Day Every journey begins with long-term preparations and last minute details. The students of Campbellsville College begin their journey into the future in a similar manner. Registration day is the first step in their jour- ney and is remembered as only a hazy view of many new faces. .1 64? The Campus Tymesfreb. 7, 19831: Let's clear the air between the Administration andnu Today's column is devoted to clearing some of the air between myself and the Administration. Let me tell you-the air does get some- what heated at times. First of all, I'd like to withdraw the words pure and mere from my editorial in the last issue on propaganda. Secondly, I apologize if any of my so-called name-calling is taken offensively. It wasn't intended to be. I use satire to either entertain or persuadeg if I mix the two it may become confusing lfor this I apologizel. However, I don't apologize for the basis or the facts in any of my editorials, columns or entertaining writings. I'm only trying to point out important things and keep the paper lively. To clear up some other points on my propaganda article, Iwill reiterate. To begin with, my word propaganda may be toned down somewhat to the word publicity. However, the classic deinition of the first seems to me to fit better. My basis for that article was the printing of brochures that didn't tell the whole story, the slight mention sometimes of mandatory convo to many prospective students and a general covering-up of nega- tives on this campus. For instance, the Tymes isn't used in PR exhibits. Why? Because we're too controver- sial? The yearbook is used: why not the student newspaper which reflects life at the College on a more immediate level, telling all as fully and accurately as possible. Resignations are often held under wraps, and rarely ever do I see a release in the CKNJ that tells about those leaving, only about those coming in. Community people may soon believe we're expanding, be- cause we add so many new people and rarely tell who left or why. Another example of holding back some negative news was in the handling of the retention study. I had to go to clever means to obtain a copy of those results. 'I'hey weren't being released at the time. It would be interesting to know how much follow-up this enlighten- ing report is receiving. Next, the Administration has always been reluctant to be evaluated by the faculty and students, even though submit- ting to evaluation is an essential step in good public relations. Several times the faculty have agreed to being evaluated by students, and yearly they are evaluated by the Administration. Evaluation is not necessarily bad. Why, the Administration might make all A's or B's anyway lwith maybe a C or twol. Concerning another issue, I've been accused by a few persons of alienating the students. I certainly haven't intended to. Furthermore all letters sent to me have been published, including those critical of me and the fC es.PF I don't mind pressure and I don't mind flack. I print what I think is fair and important. If I makea mistake, I don't mind to be criticized task L.D. Kennedy if you don't believe mel. However, I do feel that a Christian college must be free to engage in open, independent thinking and dialogue without ment of His day, and he This paper has been free of hi 'many years, and 9 sometimes made shocking, censors 'p for Steve S uncomfortable observations. Ia r in ethi I I pp ec t s as ajournalist. Myjoblifyoucallputting out We've got L.D. Kennedy to nine papers a year for no pay than for a larg ay y of k e m 'orit d dit, ' bi ' to th t. I ,- 'i . . , S A ALL - N Intrusion shows lack of res ect for students' ability According to the Constitution of the United States of America, people have the right to a fair and orderly assembly. After a glance at Webster's, we've discovered that Campbellsville College students still qualify as people. Therefore, the Administration of this institution has no right in being upset over the recent session SGA assembled on 8111299- SGA may be a privilege granted by the Administration of private colleges, but right to assemble is a constitutional right. Furthermore, SGA officials had nothing but good intent for the outcome of the session. It waslconducted both legally and ethically. Would the Administration have been happier if the students had assembled outside College grounds? We think not, but an assembly of this kind is legal. The meeting was intended to be closed to Administrators in order for students to feel less pressure in voicing their opinions. A session discussing the problems with the Administration was to be held later. However, two administrators did intrude on the meeting. Regardless of their intent, students felt betrayed and called for adjournment due to their intrusion. Is it necessary for students to look for alternative locations to hold assemblies in order to keep them closed to Administration? Problems at this College may be minimal or greater than meets the eye. That doesn't matter in this case. The fact is that we, as students, weren't respected enough by the Administration to hold a closed orderly meeting of the student body without Administrative interference. Furthermore, we've been told that the organizer of this session has gone through some very delicate times lately as have many who in the past have voiced their opinion at the College. The intent is not to take- over, but to work with the Administration to better this institution. Denying students' rights will not solve the internal problems of this institution. Students must be given freedom to assemble and air the problems and must be treated with respect as mature individuals. We can make important suggestions in a proper orderly fashion if given the chance to carry out the rights laid down by the forefathers of these United States. His presence will be missed but his work will not be forgotten. Editor 's Note In creating this annual the yearbook staff has attempted to lead you through the 1982-83 school year many years from now. We hope you will look back through the year and find this book helpful in remembering small details. Where ever your journeys may take you we hope you will be able to use this year's experience in a successful life. I wish to thank my staff for their encouragement throughout the year and for their help. They have ways of presenting new ideas that would otherwise be unacceptable. My sincere thanks go to Terri Thompson for the hours she spent in the darkroom when no one else would. Teresa Taylor always came through on the typewriter for me. Lois Roundhouse and Brenda Mowery spent hours going through names and pictures when I didn't have the time to help. My special thanks go to the Campbellsville College Public Relations office. They allowed me to use any of their negatives I needed. The hours put in on this book are greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all. Cathie Curry Maple Trail editor
