We'll fondly recall that cute little girl we were in love with but were afraid to ask outg and get goose-bumps when we think of that great-looking guy who would never quite notice us. We'll never forget that special person we could share with when the going got rough. 'N i s umm cmmunsiqg NNNNU How can we ever forget those dreaded teachers - those inducers of drudgery. We'll remember those many late hours we spent doing what we thought was useless busy work . We'll recall our favorite teachers as well as our not so favorite ones. We'll remember how some were inspiring, others depressing, with the rest hanging in limbo. We will also remember that, re- gardless of their method, each teacher played a very important role in what we are. We'll remember how carefree we were. In a time of skyrocketing interest rates, high unemployment, and rising inflation we'll think of how apathetic we were. We were aware of Russia's agressive movement, sym- pathetic with the American hostages and concerned with world hunger but were convinced that a new president with new ideals would put us back on the right road. We'll also recall that at the time we didn't foresee what an important part our generation would play in this recovery mission. ow t S p I M3515 f W S , 'ie 1-Am, p .t,- i at W M 'P M, al ,..,,.-.. ,Q i 2 i i is 3 ,sl g 2 l A 2 5 2 if Q i t -i if if ! The toughest job facing many is the monumental task of moving their worldly possessions from home to their dorm. When all of the clothes have been hung up and the furniture has been arranged just perfectly and you think you just about have it whipped, you realize you didn't pre-register. After waiting in line for I-2 hours, you also realize many other people didn't pre-register. With all of these little things out ofthe way you are now ready to settle down to some serious college orientation. This can only mean Freshman Week. Freshman Week is sponsored annually by the senior class in an attempt to make our new students feel warmly welcomed. Although freshmen are the object of many jokes during this week, it gives them an opportunity to get acquainted with members of the senior class. The Banquet Every year, as spring creeps around the corner, Campbellsville College is there to greet it with its Spring Festival. The Spring Festival, which always occurs near Va1entine's Day, serves many purposes at Campbellsville College. It's a time when everyone gets a good mealg when Cupid's arrow strikes the hearts of many young loversg when we get to dress up in our best clothes. But perhaps more importantly it's a time when everyone has a chance to let loose and enjoy themselves after a long, boring winter. The 1981 Spring Festival provided a refreshing evening for everyone who attended. if Top: While Master-of-Ceremonies, Dr. Frank Cheatham, prepares for tomorrow's classes, Jerry Howerton entertains the audience. Included in these were football, soc- cer, basketball, softball, tennis, golf, weight lifting, and swimming. Working around financial hardships, in- tramural directors Sheila Everly and Keith French did a commendable job with the program. 'fwftwidw - Many students found their way out ofthe dorms and onto the playing fields. The prevalent attitude was not whether you won or lost but whether you enjoyed yourself. With this in mind we can surely say, A good time was had by allf' 35 Sub: Place To Un ind Year in and year out the SUB proves to be the most heavily traveled building on campus. It's main drawing card is the cafeteria although it has other attractions as well. Getting the number two billing is the Rec Hall. The usual action took place on the ping pong and pool tables while the addition of the new Galaxian machine provided a different form of entertainment. The student lounge was mainly inhabited by com- muters while they waited for their next class. The addition of new furniture made this wait much more enjoyable. Also attracting people to the building were the offices of the SGA, BSU, campus nurse, and Student Life. 'ilk .X a 'ls- it-wail! MOTNWAlwgkwmv..mimw-N,,.g4-1...11. Q... Although this is true to a cer- tain extent, the primary function ofthe cafeteria is not eating. In reality the cafeteria is used for whatever the student body deems appropriate. During the course of a semester the following things can be expected to happen at anytime: announcements being made over the roar of the stu- dents, tests being studied for, dates being made, romances blossoming and some bottoming out, jokes being swapped, and of course an oc- casional tray hitting the floor. With an increase in the variety and selec- tion of food and an excellent salad bar there were many unfounded rumors circulating that eating could very well become a major activity in the cafeteria. . ...Q '11 38 me TOP RIGHT - The deserted lunch line minutes before a long line forms in the top left photo. After a couple weeks of these good intentions they become lit- tle more than just that, good intentions . Many things lead students off the straight and narrow path: television, stereos, dates, parties, intramurals, or as is usually the case, a talkative friend. Then the week before finals rolls around. This is the week that stu- dents migrate to the library in mass, many of whom are making their first appearance there of the semester. Though conditions may be crowded and some may be unfamiliar with the library, they are all there for one, unified purpose: THE EXAM CRAMV' This is the period in the student's life when a semester's worth of work is condensed down to one week. The Working Student: A Busy Life There were very few HELP WANTED signs on campus last year. With increased costs of attending college many students found it advantageous to find part-timejobs. Some went off campus to find work while many found jobs through the campus Work Study Program. Work study is a vital part of many students efforts to continue their educa- tion. An advantage to work study is that many times it allows a student training in the field they hope to enter upon graduation. Funds for work study come from two different sources: the federal government pays 80 percent of the stu- dents earning with the college picking up the rest ofthe tab. Last year 340 students earned S255,000 through the work study program. AQ? YWQM . ' ty l Nz, ABOVE - Linda Ray gets a little finger action on the keyboard LEFT - Deedee Smith plays operator. The field has been used as a practice field and for intramurals, but the larger playing area should allow the Tiger baseball team to play their home games here instead of at the City-County Park where they've been playing. The team should draw bigger crowds by playing on campus. ff The Record ...Q.. ...4.,.1-4 .. The building is structurally sound but will need a new roof and some other repairs. When restoration is completed, the new Old Gym might be a new location for the .. Student Union. A more immediate renovation project is planned for the Alumni Chapel. This twenty-eight year old building will take on gothic windows and a steeple, and the total interior is to be remodeled. Plans call for the Chapel to have a worship center, a Little Theatre, modern classrooms, conference rooms, and offices. The college family should enjoy the remodeled Chapel since a large fraction of the classes are taught here. This house across from North Hall on Hud- dleston Street was torn down in the spring of '81 and the lot is to be cleared for student parking. The Baptist Student Union is a campus wide organization open to any student who wishes to belong. There are three major thrusts in its objectives. The largest of these is the Impact Area which involves all types of ministry, i.e. BSU Choir, revival teams, puppets, clowns, drama troupe, student missions and coffeehouses. The Insight Area is aimed at student growth in a variety of activities such as Bible studies, devotions, prayer, retreats, seminars, and worship. The final area is that of Involvement with different groups on campus such as commuters, international and married students, athletics, and others. These three major thrusts make the Baptist Student Union a well rounded organization which offers everyone on campus an op- portunity on a weekly basis. It's Campbellsville College out of the gate first and leaving the field. But wait! The Tigers are in trouble. The field is closing in. Down the stretch, the Tigers regain their com- posure to win it going away . . . to Kansas City. The Tigers won their first eight games before taking what was supposed to be a few days off for Christmas. Lack of funds prevented Coach Cunningham from bringing the boys back to early practice. Throw in injuries and a flu bug and the Tigers lost seven of their next twelve games. When everyone fexcept the team! had lost hope, the Tigers put it all together to reel off eight straight victories, including KIAC and District 32 Championships. The final record of 21-8 was the best ever at Campbellsville College. James Boulware, though hampered by a groin injury, led the Tigers with a 20 point, 12.5 rebound average. Cecil Ellis netted 16.3 points per outing with Rick Stansbury chipping in 12.3. Playmaker Joey Stewart dished out 308 assists during the season for an average of 11.4 per game. 1980-81 Tigers Opp Northern Kentucky 83 69 Belmont 92 82 Georgetown 80 72 Belmont 77 71 Bellarmine 95 87 Berea 71 65 Northern Kentucky 90 71 Centre 81 73 Cumberland 75 79 Union 71 70 Thomas More 102 87 Centre 83 73 Cumberland 71 73 Pikeville 90 75 Transylvania 84 75 Thomas More 78 92 Kentucky State 69 74 Pikeville 87 90 Clinch Valley 84 94 Berea 101 106 Union 90 64 Clinch Valley 86 68 Georgetown 82 74 KIAC TOURNEY Georgetown 91 85 Pikeville , 102 100 Cumberland 86 83 DISTRICT 32 TOURNEY ' Pikeville 85 71 Cumberland 86 74 NAIA NATIONAL TOURNEY Kearney State, Neb. 96 106 Front row: Joey Stewart, Cecil Ellis, Rick Stansbury, Jeff Gumm, Marty Bailey, John Godby fMgr.J. Without the services of All-American James Boulware and overshadowed by a much larger team, the Tigers were very unsure of themselves in the early going. Finding them- selves down by as many as 25 points in the second half, some changes had to be made. It was obvious that a controlled offense wasn't working, so Coach Lou Cunningham turned his horse loose. What followed was a run and gun show put on by the Tigers that had nearly everyone in Kemper Arena cheer- ing them on. The Tigers cut the lead to 3 points with just two minutes remain- ing and had to foul in order to gain possession. Kearney St. calmly sank the free throws which resulted in the final l08-96 score. Fred Parker dazzled the crowd with 23 spectacular points and Rick Stansbury pumped in l9 from long range. Frosh. Jeff Gumm tallied 17 points while adding 9 assists. Cecil Ellis and Ed Priest chipped in 15 and ll points respectively. . X. . . ,-ft. V is tw X '- ' 9' ww A . A A M! After a suc- cessful 79-80 campaign their record stood at only 4- 5 after nine games. What many people didn't notice was that three of those losses were to Division I powers with the other two occurring in a place called South Carolina. Although their record suf- fered, the experience they gained proved invaluable at the end of the season. Winning 14 oftheir next 17 games, the Lady Tigers found themselves playing in the AIAW Region II Tournament in North Carolina. The Lady Tigers were once again led by senior Betty Conover who averaged 21.6 points and 12 rebounds per game. Sophomore Bonita Scott scored at a 17.5 clip per contest whilejunior Cathy Settle scored 13 points per outing and claimed 10 rebounds. With its best recruiting year ever, the 1981-82 edition of the Lady Tigers could surpass these accomplishments. 1980-81 Tigers Opp Pikeville 85 69 Cumberland 85 59 Western Ky. Perhaps highlighting her spectacular career at Campbellsville College was being named AIAW third team All- American. Her many other achievements in- clude: All KWIC Tournament, All AIAW Region, and All KIAC teams, the leading scorer in Campbellsville College history and the all- time leading women's scorer in Kentucky. In 109 games, she hit double figures 105 times. She scored 20 or more points in 58 games and on twelve occasions topped 30 points. Her 2,338 total points average out to 21.6 points per outing while her career rebounding average is a hefty 12.4. Her field goal percentage after four years is 59.6. These many accomplishments on court of- ten overshadowed the zeal she showed off-court. She gained equal respect off the basketball court with the Christian witness she never failed to radiate to the people around her. 95 Tiger Baseball is +-- ' KNEELING - Len Kearney, Vince Salyers, Joe Prewitt, Jimmy Fuqua, Gary Nance, Dave Kohl, Tim Percell. Af- ter a successful fall campaign, all eyes were set on the national tourney. But after winning only three of their first eleven games these expectations went down the drain. Adding to problems was a bad-hop grounder that left freshman Donnie Richardson with a severe case of amnesia. Keeping their spirits up, the Tigers fought back to win twelve of their next fourteen games. In winning their division, the Tigers were pitted against Union in the conference play-offs. Again the roller coaster went down as they fell 4-2. In dropping four of their last five games the Tigers finished with a 16-15 slate. Senior Tim Highbaugh finished with a 5-7 record although he was 4- 1 in the conference. Flame-throwing junior Rick Drake showed promise by striking out 85 batters in 76 innings. Sophomore Ron Blanton led the team in hits, RBI's, and home runs. Richardson was the best hitter at a .391 clip. We saw the people of Poland stand up for their rights and terrorists in lran deny those of 52 Americans. We saw a new surge in American patriotism which could very well have begun when the United States hockey team captured the gold medal in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. This attitude was reinforced when we refused to participate in the summer games in Moscow as a protest to the Soviets' presence in Afganistan. America, with the help of a new president, reasserted itself as the leader of the free world. In order to improve something you have to make changes. A few of the changes we made included adding 8 extra pages ofcolor, cutting opening theme from 16 pages to 6, giving the season results of all spring sports, and utilizing many intriguing layouts. In using approximately 150 more pictures than the 1980 edition, we attempted to include as many people as possible. Ex- tra money was also spent on the cover that we personally designed. As our dedication to the Dia- mond Jubilee, we took our division pages which are usually left blank and inserted old pictures we reproduced from years past. This yearbook is the culmination of many hours ofwork by many people. At the top of the list is the White brothers, Jeff and Greg. They, along with myself, spent Christmas break, spring break, and part of the summer planning and putting together this yearbook. They each had many good ideas and some much needed criticism. Greg had a big hand in the different layouts you see in the first 30 pages. Sharon Ogle and Donna Godbey came to our rescue many times to type up badly needed copy sheets late at night. Not enough can be said about Joel McKee. He accepted all ofhis picture assignments and never missed his deadline. Gale Pierce was very valuable in both taking pictures and doing layouts. Dr. Doty, my advisor, was always willing to give advice when I needed it but never interfered or overruled me. I am indeed grateful he gave me a free hand in developing the yearbook. Dr. Doty also provided some excellent color pictures. Hugh Moss, a local resident, also provided some badly needed color pictures. The art work dividing the academic sections was done by my brother, David. I hope you enjoy the 1981 Maple Trail. We have made it very enjoyable, if not funny at times, to read. We covered the school year from the time everyone was moving into the dorms until the last diploma was handed out. Campbellsville College is a special college and we hope we have presen- ted the school year in a special way. Although it is not perfect we are proud to offer it to the school and the student body. ENJOY!!! Danny England 1981 Editor Maple Trail 168
